Yeah, it just really isn’t a children’s book XD This is probably my favorite warriors book, but man! When she attacked Frecklewish, that was brutal!

My favorite Ebook. I judged it by its cover and wanted to skip it when I got Shadows of the Clans. But then I realized that it did look good. From first word, page, and chapter it was a great book!
I was really sad when MapleShade died :C and her kits . . . If the leader let her stay she would have been still a good cat!

I bet it was mainly because their father killed his son.

One has to wonder how he might have reacted if she’d just fessed up and hadn’t lied to him making him think his son was her kits’ father. True she never said he was, but lying by omission is still lying. I lost a lot of sympathy for Mapleshade at that point. If she’d simply told the truth and that was why they cast her out, I would be more understanding, but in that situation she was really the one at fault every pawstep of the way. That’s why I’ve never sympathized with her. In my mind, she betrayed her Clan in more ways than one and then she was reckless and got her kits killed and I didn’t blame her mate for rejecting her after that, losing kits would have to have been hard for him. Granted he was kind of a fox-heart about it.

How exactly was the death of her kits her fault? She had been exiled from ThunderClan, and her kits wrongly exiled. She couldn’t stay in ThunderClan territory, and it would be dangerous and difficult to try and raise them as a rogue on her own. The safest place for them was in RiverClan with their father. She tried to take them there so they would be safe. It’s not her fault that the river started to flood and swept her kits away. She had her kits using the stepping-stones, which are supposed to be the safest way to cross the river.

I think she should have waited for the flood to go down and lived as rogues until then.

Did she know the river was flooding at the time? I don’t recall. Either way, life is dangerous as a rogue, especially as a mother on her own trying to raise three young kits who can’t hunt yet. I think she was totally right to try to bring them to a Clan where they’d be safe, rather than live as a rogue first, in which scenario she’d have to leave them alone and unguarded in a den while hunting every day.

I don’t think she did until she got to the river, but Appledusk might have told her. Either way, there was time for her to turn back, but I agree with Jayie on the rogue part.

          1. The exile was her fault to begin with for lying about the kits’ father by not telling the truth. Most of the other cats in her position at least had the sense to not get on their leader’s bad side by directly lying to them.
          2. She knew the river was dangerously unpredictable, and any cat with sense at that time would have been cautious, especially after the events that transpired earlier that day.
          3. Her kits were already exhausted by the trek to the river and back, so she should not have made them cross themselves, they would’ve been too tired to make the jumps necessary to get across the stepping stones. If you’re going to take them to RiverClan, find a safe place to wait for a patrol or take the kits across the stones one by one, I say. The stepping stones are perilous for a warrior, how are exhausted kits supposed to make those long jumps?

            1. Frecklewish was the one who assumed they were her brother’s kits and refused to listen otherwise. Mapleshade shouldn’t have gone along with it, but it wasn’t her initial plan to say they were Birchface’s kits. And none of it justifies Oakstar exiling innocent kits who can’t look after themselves, leaving only one cat to protect and look after them. It was cruel, and not remotely justified.
            2. I’m pretty sure Stormkit and Featherkit were even younger than they were carried across the exact same spot in the river, and RiverClan seemed sure that they were old enough to be carried across safely. Mapleshade tried to carry them across the safest spot on the river. Why exactly does that make her a worse parent than Graystripe, who carried his even younger kits across the exact same spot on the river?
            3. I addressed this one below.

I bet her kits were shocked that she murdered others. Does she still love them even after being in the dark forest so long? I bet they are sad she isnt with them in Starclan.

I agree, but still Mapleshade has a reason to hate the clans. She could have been a rogue, but she would have to have had another cat with her. Maybe she could live with Barely or another friendly barn cat ( Not saying there are many of those!).

But also I don’t think the farm was even there back then, much less barley. I totally agree that there wasn’t much else she could have done, she did the right thing by trying to get to Riverclan, and Appledusk is just a BUTT. But why did she go to the dark forest? Her kits (starclan kits) wanted her to kill Frecklewish, Appledusk, and Ravenwing, so why was she sent to the dark forest????? STARCLAN WANTED HER TO KILL THEM!!!

I’m pretty sure it was the same farm, but Barley wasn’t there yet. If not, it might have been the farm Crookedstar stayed at for a while.

I feel like there was only a couple decades’ difference between Mapleshade and Barley or less. I don’t think her kits wanted her to kill them, instead that she was half-mad with grief and despair and felt the need for revenge, and overstepped it – she killed a (tbh bad) medicine cat, a former Clanmate, and tried to destroy every trace of Appledusk’s line. I can understand and sympathize with grieving for her kits, but she went too far to be accepted in StarClan.

I loved the book, but honestly it was very different from the main series. It had a darker feel a more hateful vibe starting about half way through the book.

    Hey Kate, (or anyone else)
Where did the kits go after they drowned? Did they find StarClan?
