It was an odd feeling not to wake up starving for the first time in weeks.Β Kat had expected to be woken up with an aggressive stomachache, like every day, and dread getting out of her nest.Β But today was different.Β Perhaps it was not the more advanced and effective hunting techniques that changed the morale of the Clan and her as of late–it was the hope that resulted.
Kat dragged herself to her paws, stretching out.Β Still half asleep, her jaws split into a gaping yawn.
Something cold hit her neck, and with a surprised wince she realized that it had begun to rain.Β The makeshift roof had not been enough to contain a few raindrops, and Kat silently prayed that it was just going to be a drizzle.
Kat ungracefully tiptoed over the other bodies of her Clanmates, uttering the occasional βoopsβ and βsorryβ for every limb she stepped on.Β Needless to say, she woke up a few disgruntled warriors.Β She dashed out of the den before anyone could make a bitter remark.
βYouβre up early,β came a voice behind her.Β Kat spun around clumsily and finally recognized the owner of the voice.Β Copperclaw.
Copperclaw seemed to have been awake for a while, or she at least did compared to Kat.Β Kat nodded a response.
βBelieve me, Iβm just as surprised as you are.Β When I was a human I would get up at–β Kat so wished she could bite back those words, but they spluttered out.Β Copperclaw looked unsettled, as did a few of the apprentices sitting near her.
The mood of the morning shifted dramatically.Β Kat at first had such high hopes for today.Β It had almost seemed normal.Β But now…
βTake some warriors of your choosing and some apprentices outside the camp–in that little hollow outside camp–underneath the willow tree.Β See if you can teach some hunting techniques–you and Jayfrost,β Copperclaw said, diffusing any tension.Β Kat dipped her head.
How am I going to teach apprentices?Β That was pure luck the other day.Β Jayfrost was stalking it and I lumbered into it while chasing a butterfly.. she thought apprehensively.Β She did as ordered, and stalked back into the warriors den. Β βUh, Jayfrost, Iceshard, Elkheart,β she called. Β βWanna go teach some rad apprentices?β
βOf course,β replied Jayfrost, who had just finished collecting more moss for her nest.Β Elkheart followed behind her, beaming.Β Iceshard bounded across a few warriors towards the entrance.
Kat was just about to leave the camp until Elkheart pointed out something from behind her. Β βHey, Kat, arenβt we going to need some rad apprentices to teach?β
Starting to prickle with embarassment, Kat laughed awkwardly. Β βYou know, that is a great point, Elkheart.β
Why am I acting like such an idiot?Β What is going on?Β For once, everything is working out…why does it not feel that way?
βWe have to learn in the rain?β groaned Applepaw.Β She, Stormpaw, Snakepaw, Cypresspaw, Honeypaw, and Olivepaw dragged their paws along the ground while following the warriors out of camp.
βHey!β Kat said sharply, turning to face the apprentice. Β βWeβre going to live this up.Β This is going to be amazing.Β You just have to help me make it amazing.β
By the expression she got in return, Kat knew that she may have scared the apprentice more than getting her excited.Β She exchanged a nervous look with Jayfrost as she continued down the path.
βWhat if we get eaten by the badger?β asked Olivepaw, shivering.
There was a few moments of silence following.Β Elkheart finally spoke up.
βBadgers donβt come out in the rain…theyβre uh…afraid of thunderstorms,β she said.Β All of the warriors nodded to each other in agreement.Β The apprentices were still skeptical.Β Kat steered them all into the area under the huge willow tree.Β Only flecks of rain seeped through the dense branches.
After a few more measures of convincing, the apprentices soon calmed down enough to sit down.Β The four warriors sat on a rock next to the trunk of the tree.
βSo.Β You all would probably like to know how to hunt better than before…and learn our super secret tactics,β Kat began not-so-steadily.Β She was beginning to shake in her paws.Β How am I going to present this?Β Waddle through the forest and hope you trip on prey?
Before Kat could sink herself deep into embarrassment, she heard a sorrowful sound from the apprentices.Β She saw Iceshard rushing over to Cypresspaw, who was starting to shake with tears.
Snakepaw nudged her friend lightly on the shoulder. Β βWhatβs wrong, Cypresspaw?β
Cypresspaw looked up with eyes red from crying. Β βI donβt mean to cry,β she said, smiling to try to prevent from frowning, βI just…I really…I miss my family–I, I miss being in my house, being warm, being happy…I miss school and teachers and…I want to go home!β
Before long, almost all of the apprentices started to cry.Β Elkheart was looking down in a dangerously serious way.Β Jayfrost was staring off into nothingness.Β Iceshard was biting his lip.Β Kat felt like her whole body was blowing up and waiting to explode with emotion, but, for the first time, she held back.Β She had to be brave for the apprentices.Β She had to be a senior warrior.
But there were no words that she could offer to comfort them.
Snakepaw stifled her sorrow and spoke to each of her friends individually.Β Finally, she turned to the warriors. Β βI donβt know if weβll be able to continue our lesson today.Β Everyoneβs very…broken up about the…thing.β Β She sniffled. Β βWould that be alright?β
Kat turned to the other warriors.Β They all quietly mumbled an agreement.
βOf course itβs alright,β Kat agreed.Β She went up to the group.Β Most were using their paws to wipe away tears, while others were still sobbing. Β βI know itβs difficult for all of you.Β But we have to stick together.Β We have to have hope.Β We can still get out of this.β
But there was something very hollow in her words.Β Kat did not feel as if she believed the words themselves.
The group headed back to the camp.Β Rain had begun to come down a bit harder than before, but it was not yet pouring.Β The sky was completely blanketed with gray clouds.Β Only slivers of sunlight seeped through thick fog.
Copperclaw was confused, but quietly understood once Jayfrost explained it.Β The apprentices went back into their den.Β Kat was about to escape back into the warriorsβ den to sleep but a voice from the cliff above Cakestarβs den called her back.
βEveryone, gather below this ledge for a meeting!β
It was Copperclaw, with Cakestar beside her.Β Cakestarβs lion-like mane covered her paws as she lied down gracefully.Β Her eyes were shut, and her head was bent forward.Β Kat doubted that she was even awake.Β It killed her to see the once confident and regal leader now reduced to being weak and shaking in the rain.
Dawnmist sat, unsettled, next to her apprentice by her den.Β She watched Cakestar like a hawk.Β Her eyes did not waiver from the leader.Β Silverwind bumped her friend and mentor gingerly, hoping to draw her attention, but Dawnmist did not lose focus.
Flame, Flowerstream, and a few other warriors gathered beneath the highledge.Β Several apprentices joined their mentors.Β Copperclaw finally continued.
βI know this has all been a trying experience for you all.Β It has been difficult.Β We have had to brave starvation, true fear, and being without a home.Β But we cannot give up hope.Β We must continue to remain as a Clan.Β We must continueβ¦β
If Copperclaw was still talking, Kat didnβt hear it.
Her mind wandered off to somewhere else.Β She started foraging in her mind for memories of being a human.Β To be at ease.Β She remembered her sisters and brother.Β She remembered her parents.Β She remembered feeling loved.Β She remembered being happy.Β She remembered having a full stomach.Β She remembered being taken care of.Β She remembered peace.
And she missed it all.Β There was a gaping hole in her heart that could not be filled.
And then anger ensued.Β Anger that did not belong to her…anger that was purely feline.Β Purely instinctual.
Hope was futile.Β How many times were they going to keep repeating the same words and pretend that everythingβs okay?Β How many times is the word βhopeβ going to pretend Cakestarβs illness doesnβt exist?Β How many times were they going to pretend that cats–no–people arenβt dying?
βSTOP!β
The camp grew to a quiet, besides the sound of the rain falling down, now more fiercely than before.Β Everyone looked to Kat, who would have been embarrassed, but now looked fiery.Β She must have seemed to be a completely different cat to some, who usually saw her as a clumsy, lazy, bobtailed clown.
Her fur stood on end, and her pupils were slits.
Copperclaw closed her mouth, ears flattening.
βI am sick and tired of pretending that everythingβs okay.Β I am tired of comforting kits and apprentices and promising that theyβll see their parents again, and everythingβs going to work out.Β I am tired of going to bed every night forgetting more and more about being a human.Β I am tired of pretending that Cakestarβs just going to recover every night and things are going to work out.Β I am tired of pretending that weβre going to skip over to the badger and befriend it and pretend that no oneβs going to get killed.Β I am tired of pretending that StarClanβs going to come and save us all.β
Katβs claws were unsheathed.Β Copperclaw leapt down.Β She was evidently confused by Katβs change in attitude, but dismissive.
βListen, I was just as skeptical as you were.Β But we have no other choice.Β We can either stay together and have a chance at surviving, or break up and perish.Β Your choice,β Copperclaw replied.Β Cats had begun to shuffle behind Copperclaw, while others stayed behind Kat.
βKat, calm down,β said Shiningspirit from behind Copperclaw.
βNo!β Kat snarled. Β βWhere has all of this whole charade gotten us? Shiningspirit, try to remember your name.Β Your real name.β
Some cats had begun to think, but no one said a word.Β Copperclaw must have remembered, because she remained calm.Β Her eyes did not move from staring at Kat.
βExactly!Β Thereβs no way out of this!Β Weβre forgetting who we are–nothing is working–β
Copperclaw had stepped forward and offered a paw to Kat to try and talk, but that was when instinct took over.
A crack of thunder echoed, and Katβs unsheathed claw swiped across Copperclawβs face.Β Blood splattered on the ground.Β Flashes of lightning lit up the newly shed red blood.Β Copperclaw nearly succumbed to hissing and snarling, like a real cat, but stopped herself.
Kat stepped back.Β Her head shook and she blinked.
It was then that she came back to her senses to see blood on her paw.Β Eyes were all glued to her as if she had six legs.
βWhat did I…Copperclaw–Copperclaw Iβm so…sorry–I didnβt–I canβt-β Kat spluttered.Β Copperclaw used her forearm to wipe the cut on her cheek.Β Silverwind rushed over with herbs.
The thunder crackled once again, and Kat ran away in fear.Β She needed to hide.Β Far away from anyone else.
When she found a snug tree hollow to curl up in, Kat could only hear her rapid heartbeat against heavy rain and thunder.Β She covered her eyes with her paws.
I…Iβm losing my humanity..!Β She whimpered pitifully.Β What if…what if Iβm only the first?
