Streampaw defends some of her favourite characters from Mary-Sue-dom
Hey kitties! Stream here with my SECOND ARTICLE! WHOOP! Anyway, I’m apprentice now! YAY! so let’s just get to the point. I will be putting cat sin order of how many people think they are mary-sues. Let’s start!
6. Bluestar- Now, I personally don’t think bluestar is a mary-sue and I don’t know why people do. I mean, genetics- fine, character- fine(SHE HAS FLAWS! she is snappy and short-tempered and stubborn. if you disagree try reading bluestar’s prophecy, again if you already have, and the whole of TPB), warrior name- fine, appearance- fine, backstory- a bit sueish but she was HAPPY.
5. Feathertail- I can’t really say much about Feathertail. She never really had much character development, and the reason some people like her is because they like Silverstream, or they ship her with Crowfeather. But the way she’s been written, it’s mary-sue all the way through, complete with heroic death, rescue and ‘goodbye, my love’.
4. Lionblaze- By definition, a mary-sue/gary stu is a character with NO FLAWS. Lionblaze has those. like with Bluestar, and he doesn’t even have a tragic backstory! ok, he has a prophecy, but so does Jayfeather! I don’t know WHY people think he’s a gary stu. He loses his powers, and he has relationship problems! for Starclan’s sake, people, can’t you see?!?!? (sorry I had to put that)
3. firestar- I think firestar IS a gary-stu, but not a fully-fledged one. FireHEART was a great character, but just not fireSTAR. nothing more needs to be said here
2. Dovewing- again, I don’t know why people think she is a mary sue. She actually has flaws(the same as bluestar, plus impatience(shown in TLH/TFW with the tree training)) and she ARGUES WITH HER SISTER! she isn’t a tom magnet in my opinion, because if she was then bluestar(3 toms- Thrush, Crooked and Oak) and Squirrelflight( bramble, stormfur and ash). Her appearance isn’t sueish really- Ivypool, a silver tabby with blue eyes, is MORE SUEISH! Dovewing’s eyes are unspecified but most likely yellow/green, and her fur is SOLID GRAY. she doesn’t even have a tragic backstory. Some people hate her because ‘she replaced HOLLYLEAF THE BEST CHARACTER EVER, AND NOW WE’RE STUCK WITH A STUPID MARY-SUE TOM MAGNET!’ or they love ‘IVYPOOL, WHO SAVED THE CLANS WITH HER BRAVERY IN THE DARK FOREST, WHILE DOVEWING JUST SAT THERE AND DID NOTHING BUT WORRY ABOUT HER LOVERS!’ for starclan’s sake people! open up your eyes! you don’t just hate a cat because you like their replacement/opposite/whatever! Plus Dovewing COMPLAINS ABOUT HER POWERS! don’t get me wrong, I like Hollyleaf and Ivypool, but I just think it’s so unfair that Dovewing gets so much hate. Not everybody likes her in the books! she has a good few enemies. I have so much to say about this and I have many points that I can’t put into words. But one bit where I really liked her was the scene with her and minty in Bramblestar’s storm. I was surprised she was so patient with minty, and I think Dovewing was actually quite a good character, just badly written. If this was an OC review and Dovewing was an OC she would get a 7.5/8.5.
1. Spottedstalker(Spottedleaf) MOST DEFINITELY A MARY-SUE( but not a fully fledged one. I think everybody agrees on that).

Firestar was ok, they overused him and I wish more cats got the spotlight
One flaw about this article is everyone says a Mary Sue is a “perfect” character, when a Mary Sue, is actually, by definiton, “a character who faces no challenges in a story.” Superman could be as perfect as a diamond but as long as they keep throwing at him powerful enemies they can’t call it a Gary Stu. Many of these charries faced challenges, thus they are not Sues/Stus.
There’s more to being a Mary/Gary Sue than simply facing no challenges, however. Part of being Sue is being a cliched hero or character. Sometimes perfectly acceptable character traits can be Sueish if used in excess.
i don’t know why ppl hate dovewing they say she all lazy and does nothing to help her clan and dont get me wrong i like ivypool but when ppl call her a hero for spying in the dark forest basically my point is dovewing knew her powers exsisted for saving the clan….. ivypool didn’t go into the dark forest to help the clans.she went their cuz she was jealious and arrogant and wanted to be better than everyone else and she assumed when dovepaw warned her to stop going to the dark forest ivypaw assumed she was jealoius so ivypaw was more of the marysue and another thing…ivypaw was a marysue but not ivypool so i don’t like ivyPAW but i do like ivyPOOL

Dovewing’s appearance isn’t sueish? I don’t think that is correct.
Normal, pure gray cats with blue eyes are not very common in nature.
First off, it is fairly uncommon for a cat to not have any white on them.
Second, I don’t think non-tabbies are very common in nature.
Third off, non-white non-oriental cats with blue eyes are very uncommon.
First off, not very common does not equal impossible.
Second of all, WARRIORS GENETICS ARE NOT REALISTIC!
THIRD of all, DOVEWING HAS *GREEN* EYES!
The way a character looks does not define them as a Mary Sue. A character with an unrealistic look can be more Sueish, but her character defines whether or not she’s a Mary Sue. A Sueish appearance, furthermore, would include VERY unnatural colors, like blues and pinks, and would have wings and the like, not colors that are realistic but in orders not genetically possible/uncommon.
Non-realistic appearance is not a “Sueish” appearance. Stop judging Dovewing on these things that would make her a more rare looking cat, because she is a good character.
Agree with all of them but Spottedleaf – I think she IS a full-fledged Mary-Sue. Also, Dovewing’s appearance IS pretty sueish – she’s said to be fluffy, pretty, and has a not-as-common eyes-and-fur combination. But I don’t think she’s a Mary-Sue 🙂

silverstream, half-moon and spottedleaf are all mary-sues in my opinion. at least ivypool was better at fighting than dovewing.

Yup! I pretty much agree with all of these. All though, I think Spottedleaf was a bit of a mary-sue. Her only flaw was being a stalker for/ obsessing over Firestar.

I personally think that Feathertail isn’t a Mary Sue. She got in a half-clan relationship even though she knew the disasters it would bring, she disregarded her brother’s opinion on this, and it was her love for Crowpaw that lead to her demise. In many ways, she is just as stubborn and naive as her mother.

A Mary Sue is a character that has no flaws, way too many good traits, and usually has a tragic life and are very beautiful.
Bluestar is not a Mary Sue because she has flaws, does not have many good traits, even though she has a tragic backstory.
Feathertail, to me, cannot be a Mary Sue, because she doesn’t have much characterization.
Lionblaze, I don’t like, but because he seems to have no character beyond his powers.
Firestar, in TPB, was not a Gary Stu because he had a lot of character to him, but beyond that, his character arc was over.
Dovewing is DEFINITELY not a Mary Sue. She’s caught between a guy she likes but can’t be with, and another one she doesn’t love, but is pressured to be with. That’s her own personal problem that she needs to deal with. Her power, which hurts her, erects walls between her and her sister, and puts a lot of responsibility on one cat. People expect her to have no life outside of her power, though, apparently. Dovewing doesn’t even come off as whiny! I find Dovewing as a likeable, interesting character, and a much better protagonist than Brambleclaw was. I would have rather Hollyleaf had been in the prophecy, but to be honest, I’d replace Lionblaze before I replaced Dovewing.
Spottedleaf has a novella that I haven’t read, and from what I read, yeah she’s kind of a Sue.
