Defending Millie by Ebonypaw

Ebonypaw defends Millie on her actions.

Millie is a commonly hated character because she is called a bad mother, but is she a bad mother really? No.

First of all, Briarlight is crippled. How is she crippled? She broke her backbone. She also almost died three times, once by greencough (As a kit), once by adder, and another by the tree. Do you really think Millie would ignore that? Millie is also said to rude to Jayfeather. Millie also previously lived her life as a kittypet. She isn’t used to death and injuries.

“Millie gasped. “What do you mean? Broken bones mend.””Not backbones””How do you know that?””Littlecloud had a warrior with the same inury” (Jayfeather) told her.Briarpaw was craning her neck to him.Jayfeather didn’t answer. He died didn’t he?” Briarpaw whimpered.” -Fading Echos, page 174

As you can see, Millie was trying her best to stay calm, but Jayfeather couldn’t reassure her. It’s a miracle Briarlight lived. Millie is doing the right thing by caring for Briarlight. Millie yelling at Jayfeather is just her grief. Millie only yelled at him one time, and everyone’s saying it like she yells at Jayfeather all the time. The worst Millie ever did to him was yell at him, she didn’t try to kill him like a certain Windclan cat.

Millie: “If your warrior ancestors are so powerful, why don’t they cure her? If this had happened in my old home, my housefolk would have fixed her.”
Graystripe: “Millie? Is that what you really think?”
Millie: “I don’t know what to think. I only see my kit, broken and helpless, struggling through each day, with death stalking her like a fox….”
Graystripe: “But she’s alive. She’s here with us.”

Millie: “She has to watch her littermates living the lives of warriors, while she just yowls and coughs and drags herself to and from the fresh-kill pile!” -Night Whispers, page 97.

Next up, the infamous tunnel. Like I explained so in my previous rant, Blossomfall had no right to drag Ivypool along with her to the tunnels. Blossomfall could’ve been killed, she already suffered from a concussion. Millie had a right to yell at her. All parents yell at their kids. Why is it such a surprise? Whitewing acted glad to see her because doesn’t know what her kits get into. Briarlight is already almost dead, Millie doesn’t want to see the corpse of her dead kit. If Millie hadn’t yelled at Blossomfall, Blossomfall would’ve seen it as a way of attention and would’ve repeatedly get lost until she dies. Millie saved her life, but you’re all to busy hating on her. Blossomfall could’ve hunted prey to survive the harsh cold leaf-bare, but instead went against her leader’s words and drag Ivypool with her, who isn’t even her friend!

Millie does not hate her kits, it’s been confirmed by Kate Cary herself. Blossomfall training in the Dark Forest is not her fault, and if it was, Bumblestripe would be in the Dark Forest and it would be Blossomfall’s fault for Ivypool training in the Dark Forest. Imagine if you were Millie?

Now aside from that, she’s hated for being a Silverstream replacement. I guess Sandstorm is a Spottedleaf replacement, Turtle Tail and Slate are Storm replacements, and so on. Before you say Millie looks exactly like Silverstream, read this quote.”She’s silver with blue eyes, as she’s based on a real cat belonging to one of my co-workers, James. He’s a huge fan of Millwall Football Club, which is based in London. So Millie’s real name is Millwall!” -Erin Hunter Chat 4

Next, let’s talk about Millie in Bramblestar’s Storm. Already we see Millie on a patrol with Berrynose, Rosepetal, Spiderleg, and Amberpaw.”Nothing frightens you, Bramblestar” Berrynose responded. “I’m leading a border patrol. Do you want to come with us?” As he spoke, Millie and Rosepetal pushed their way through the prickly wall, closely followed by one of the new apprentices, Amberpaw” -Bramblestar’s Storm, page 9. We then see her worried about Briarlight when the camp floods, while all Graystripe does is help Briarlight get up with other cats. He doesn’t even worry about her! Then later, Millie reassures Minty when she comes into camp. She talks about how much she loves Thunderclan and Graystripe and that she made the right choice to come here.”I wouldn’t change a thing. Except that I wish my daughter Briarlight hadn’t been injured. I’ll never leave ThunderClan, but I’ll never forget that there’s another way to live, either.” I never knew Millie felt like that, Bramblestar thought, with a pang of guilt that Millie had never been one of his favorite cats, with her perpetual fussing over Briarlight. I’ll show her more respect in the future” -Bramblestar’s Storm, page 189. Millie is seen many times comforting the kittypets. She is worried when one of them goes missing. Bramblestar’s Storm shows us Millie is nicer than we think she is.

“Bumblestripe had a mate while Blossomfall had nobody to care for her”

She had Graystripe, Bumblestripe, Ivypool (Who she should apologize to for two things) and Briarlight.

“What about Frostfur? She didn’t act like Millie with Cinderpelt”

Two things. One, she should’ve cared for her more. Two, Cinderpelt only had a broken leg, not a backbone.

“Millie is still a horrible mother for only caring for Briarlight”

Rainflower is hated for ignoring her injured kit. I guess every mother with a crippled kit is automatically a bad mother, like Frostfur and Meadowslip.

“Blossomfall was only jealous”

What about Thornclaw, Brightheart, and Brackenfur? Cinderpelt broke her leg, and they weren’t jealous. Neither were Sorrelcharm and Pigeonwing when Deadfoot got all the attention for his twisted paw. Crookedstar ended up being a great cat with a hateful mother.

“Millie should pay attention to all of her kits.”

One, they are warriors who can take care of themselves. Two, what about Graystripe?

“Millie and Graystripe don’t even love eachother”

“Wherever you are is the right place for me to be.”-The Sight, Page 330

Graystripe: “I’ve been trying to figure out how to say this…or when to say this…for days now. Millie, I…I know I’ve been hard to deal with. And I know this life can be hard. But I couldn’t have made it here without you. You saved my life, but…more than that…you saved my soul. You found me when I was lost, and you brought me back to who I really was. I’ve already said I want you to join ThunderClan with me, but I need you to know how I feel…And I hope you’ll feel the same way. Millie…I want you to stand by my side…as my mate.”

Millie: “Graystripe…to be with you…that’s what I’ve wanted since I first laid eyes on you.” -Warrior’s Return, page 87.

“Millie never goes on patrols”

“A gray pelt was moving beneath the bushes below. Graystripe. Lionblaze tasted the air. Cloudtail, Squrrielflight, and Millie too. It must be a dawn patrol” -The Last Hope, page 88

“Millie isn’t loyal to Thunderclan!”

“I wouldn’t change a thing. Except that I wish my daughter Briarlight hadn’t been injured. I’ll never leave ThunderClan, but I’ll never forget that there’s another way to live, either.”-Bramblestar’s Storm, page 189.

“You can rely on my loyalty until the day I join StarClan, and you must believe that I will live and die to protect ThunderClan. But I don’t want to change my name. I have always been Millie, and I see no shame in it.” -Dark River, page 86

  • It was Millie’s fault that Briarlight almost got eaten by a snake as kit and Honeyfern died protecting her. She was supposed to be watching her. It was also Millie’s fault that Briarkit caught green cough. If Millie had given her kits to Daisy to nurse and moved out of the nursery right away, Briarkit would have never gotten sick. Just because Briarlight is ill doesn’t mean Millie cannot show some concern for her other children’s well being. Blossomfall was badly injured. She was knocked unconscious by falling rocks, her head was hurting and she was dizzy when she regained consciousness. If you do a bit of medical research, you would know dizziness is a sign of serious injury. Being knocked unconscious is very serious indeed. Yelling is the worst thing you can do when dealing with and injured person. You can put them under more stress and cause them to further injure themselves. In reality Blossomfall’s head injury should have killed her.

    • Millie is a bad mother.
You sit and weave your lies, like a fox trots through the night.

  • Firestar and Daisy are both kittypets and they don’t make everyone miserable when tragedy occurs. Daisy lost both Toadstep and Hazeltail and she doesn’t make everyone around her miserable. Firestar suffered through the pain of the possibility of losing Cinderpaw when she was hit by a monster. Cinderpaw was practically dead when Firestar found her, Yellowfang mentions in the books that there is a strong chance she will die. Yet Cinderpaw’s mother doesn’t demand a magic solution like Millie does. She handles her grief like a mature adult. Firestar also deals with losing Yellingfang, Bluestar, and Whitestorm. He eventually loses Cinderpelt in New Prophecy. Yet despite his grief over losing her and Graystripe he does not act out. He still does his duty as clan leader.

Nobody forced Millie to join Thunderclan, at the end of the Warrior’s manga she still has her collar; she could have gone back to being a kittypet. If she was not emotionally prepared for the hardship and loss that wild cats face, she should not have joined Thunderclan.

Millie gets in Jayfeather’s way more than she actually does something helpful to take care of Briarlight. She has no idea how to treat injuries. It was Jayfeather who got Briarlight to eat when she was depressed not Millie. Frostfur’s response is more reasonable, she stays out of Yellowfang’s way and trusts her to treat Cinderpaw. Millie is perfectly counter productive with all her immature outbursts and yelling. How does yelling Brambstar when he is trying to get Briarlight to safety help the situation.?

Probably, the reason we never see Bumblestripe, Blossomfall, and Graystripe hang around the medicine cat den with Briarlight is because of how nasty Millie acts. Noticed after the incident when Bumblestripe took Briarlight out of camp and almost got in trouble with Millie, we never saw him trying to help care for Briarlight again. His relationship with Millie is not exactly healthy. In fact Millie’s relationship with Briarlight isn’t healthy. The fact that Briarlight felt she had to lie to protect her brother, shows there are issues in her relationship with mother. Millie is only focused on how she feels, she has no consideration for anyone else, not even poor Briarlight. Think of how stressful it must have been for Briarlight to see her mother yell at their clanmates.

    • Daisy wasn’t a kitty pet. She was a farm cat, which is different.
Aside from that, you had some good points. Especially the Frostfur thing. Millie should really take a page out of HER book!

  • Blossomfall is constantly seeking the attention of her parents because they are so tough on her compared to the way they are with her siblings. In Warriors: Omen of the Stars: Fading Echoes, Graystripe only scolds Blossomfall for playing even though Briarlight was also playing when she was supposed to be working “Come on, Blossompaw!’ Graystripe called to the apprentice. ‘You’re supposed to be helping, not playing.’ Blossompaw froze, her tail sweeping to a halt…’Ha!’ Briarpaw’s pads brushed the earth as she skipped out of the way, and Jayfeather pictured the scene. Blossompaw had been about to send a shower of leaves over her littermate and had been caught in the act by Graystripe.”(Hunter 25).
We never see Briarpaw or Bumblepaw get in trouble. Prior to her injury Briarpaw has an affectionate relationship with Millie, on page 96 of Fading Echoes Millie is seen nuzzling Briarpaw. Bumblepaw meanwhile gets away with being a goof ball. Graystripe and Millie’s excessive strictness with Blossomfall may have been what led her to push Ivypool around and be so driven to pass the acessment. Maybe, she feared how her parents would react if she failed. Millie and Graystripe were never very affectionate with Blossomfall even when she was a kit/apprentice.

  • You have good points in your article, Ebonypaw, but I think Millie is in the wrong. There are adults who still need support. And yes, Graystripe is bad too. He doesn’t even care about his latest litter! I can see them more as Millie’s kits than Graystripe’s. But honestly, how did they get all those pelt colors? Blossomfall is a tortie/ calico, Briarlight is brown, and Bumblestripe is the only one who resembles them 😛. But that’s another article in itself. It is okay for Millie to give attention to Briarlight, LOTS of attention, but it’s not okay for her to ignore her other kits! And yell at them! And Millie bothers Jayfeather all the time, as you so kindly put it. I get that she’s worried for her kit, but it’s not okay if you ignore your other kits. Plus, Millie did not care about Blossomfall when she yelled at her in the infamous tunnel scene! Here.
“Her tail-tip was twitching with annoyance, and her eyes were filled with bitterness.”
That isn’t a sign of overprotectiveness, if you ask me. It’s a sign of anger. Or annoyance. Instead of eyes filled with concern, they’re filled with bitterness! If she really cared about Blossomfall, she would express being upset at finding her gone, or add “You’re going to Jayfeather’s den with me, now!”
She shows no concern for Blossomfall and Bumblestripe, only Briarlight. When Bumblestripe takes Briarlight out, he expresses being afraid that he would be in trouble with Millie if she knew he took Briarlight out. And as for hating Briarlight, she hates her sister’s injury, not Briarlight. She hates it because it disables her sister from being a warrior, and a more selfish reason – Millie doting on her. During the tunnel scene, Blossomfall even asks Ivypool if Millie would care if she died. When Whitewing scolds Ivypool, she is gentle and asks why. But Milie degrades Blossomfall in front of the whole Clan. And nobody does anything to stop it.
“A good cat wouldn’t be jealous of an injured littermate. So that’s why I’ve ended up in the Dark Forest. I’m not stupid. I know it’s where cats go if they’re not allowed into StarClan. But I guess I won’t get into StarClan either because I hate my sister for being injured. So the Dark Forest is where I fit in, and I’m getting good training, better than anything we get here.”
-Sign of the Moon, pg 246
Blossomfall thinks she deserves the Dark Forest just because she’s jealous! Can it be any more obvious she’s insecure? No person can control their feelings. No one can blame Blossomfall. And if you say they can control how they react to it, no one taught Blossomfall how! If you say she should know, she should be able to do it already without being taught, she was so spoiled she thought she could do anything! And who spoiled her? MILLIE!!!!
Sorry, I went a bit overboard there. I just get a bit worked up when I’m talking about this stuff 😛.

    • I get worked up about the stuff too 😛
And I agree with you 😀
You sit and weave your lies, like a fox trots through the night.

  • Sorry but I’m going to disagree and not because of how much I strongly dislike Millie. I’m disagreeing because yes Blossomfall was being careless in the tunnels but her mother had no right to yell at her in front of everyone. And the fact that she brought up Briarlight’s injury made me extremely angry. Millie was not a good mother at all. She constantly neglected Blossomfall and Bumblestripe because of Briarlight and yes Ik she had and injury and that Millie was extremely upset over it but I just hate how she rarely paid attention to her other children and constantly focused on Briarlight even though Briarlight said she was doing fine.
And also when Cinderpelt was injured Frostfur took care of her but she also made sure to pay attention to her other children. Millie didn’t do that, she completely focused on Briarlight and completely dismissed her two other children so that’s not an excuse. Because if Frostfur can pay attention to her two other children with one of them being injured then Millie could have down the same thing but she didn’t. And also the relationship of Millie and Graystripe for me was extremely forced and I don’t like it. Yes ik they had more development but Millie is extremely unlikeable. Also we know that Blossomfall and Bumblestripe eventually grow up but that doesn’t mean that they won’t need their mother. They still want love and attention from their mother and she never gave them that attention. I mean Leafpool even though her kits were fully grown she still gave them love and attention. Also legit when Blossomfall was sick Millie wasn’t concerned at all she didn’t even care that her own daughter was sick. You can’t defend Millie being a horrible mother. Also there is nothing wrong with Silverstream. She was kind and loving. Also Rainflower gets hate for a reason she neglected her son because she didn’t like his appearance. So she’s also a horrible mother.

    • Leafpool- GOOD MOM
      Frostfur- GOOD MOM
      Millie and Rainflower- BAD MOMS
You sit and weave your lies, like a fox trots through the night.
