Why I like Millie by Thrushpaw

Thrushpaw shares their opinion on Millie.

Hello Everyone! This is my first Article on Blogclan. I’m going to tell you why I like Millie. Remember, I don’t love her, I only like her.
*SPOILER ALERT*
Who Millie Is (Skip this if you know)
Millie is a cat in Thunderclan, currently an elder. She was the cat that brought Graystripe back to Thunderclan when he went missing. They met and eventually became mates. She convinced him to go back to Thunderclan and agreed to go back with him. He taught her the clan ways. Everyone was happy to see Graystripe back, but they were uncertain about Millie.
*Note*
I haven’t read any of the comics involving Millie and Graystripe, so I might not be including some info.
Why People Hate Her:
1. People see her as replacing Silverstream as Graystripe’s mate.
2. She refused to take a warrior name.
3. She had three kits, Bumblestripe, Briarlight, and Blossomfall. When a tree fell on her, Briarlight paralyzed her spine. Millie shows all of her attention towards Briarlight and none towards her other kits.
********************
Why I like her:
1. Okay, replacing Silverstream. I wouldn’t put it that way. Millie loved Graystripe with no knowledge of Silverstream at first. But she did replace her, right? No, only kind of. But Silverstream was dead. Graystripe needed Millie, especially as an elder. Silverstream would have wanted him to be happy, right? Whether that was with a new mate or not.
2. There’s nothing wrong with Millie not taking a warrior name. She had always known herself as Millie. She wouldn’t be comfortable with any other name.
3. Okay so this is what she’s most hated for, not caring for her other kits. Well she cares and still cares for her kits, more than anything. Briarlight’s injury shocked and frightened her so much. She spent every moment with her. Briarlight’s injury seemed to overshadow everything that happened to her other kits. She tried to show she loved them, but it was so hard for her to balance her love with all three kits with Briarlight’s injury.

  • Yes, I know that Millie pays more attention to Briarlight than Bumblestripe and Blossomfall (I just noticed that all three names started with a “b” :P) because of Briarlight’s injury, and I completely agree that she should do that, but that doesn’t mean almost completely ignoring your other children except for when pointing out their faults. If I remember correctly, there was a scene in one of the Warriors books when Blossomfall was with Millie and then Millie said that she needed to check on Briarlight and then rushed away. To Blossomfall, this must have been crushing to just be rejected by her mother. From other comments, I saw that people say that Blossomfall wasn’t a kit anymore, so she shouldn’t feel that it is unfair, but if Millie just gave Blossomfall a little bit more attention and encouragement, Blossomfall wouldn’t have felt so left out.

    • Exactly!
Also, itā€™s totally Millieā€™s Fault Blossomfall trained in the Dark Forest, so I hate her for that too.

  • First of all I respect your opinion, but I have to say I disagree. After Briarlight’s injury none of Millie’s interactions with her other children are positive or loving. In Warriors: Omen Of the Stars: Sign of the Moon, when Bumblestripe takes Briarlight out of camp; he is afraid that Millie will find out. Cinderheart tells him not to let her find out and Briarlight lies to Millie to protect her brother from their mother’s wrath. What this tells us is there are some issues between Millie and her son.

Millie was out of line when she yelled at Blossomfall, who had come home badly injured. Her body language in the scene tells us that she could care less “Her tail-tip was twitching in annoyance….Millie drew her lips back in a snarl. Her eyes were full of bitterness…”(Hunter 254-255).- Warriors: Omen of the Stars: Sign of the Moon. The way she talked to Blossomfall in this scene, reminds me of the way Uncle Vernon speaks to Harry Potter.

Millie doesn’t try to show Blossomfall and Bumblestripe that she loves them, even though she has the opportunity to. She is kinder to outsiders than she is to them. If she has time to be kind to Minty in Bramblestar’s Storm, what is stopping her from showing some kindness to her son and daughter? She could have responded to Blossomfall in a caring way when she came home hurt..

However, the Briarlight/Blossomfall drama is not the core reason I don’t like Millie. I didn’t like Millie when she was introduced, she felt like an unnecessary add in character. I would have preferred it if she played her role, brought Graystripe home, and then left. It seemed like she was someone’s O C, someone who was close friends with the writers begged to have their own character put in the story.

I also don’t like her because she is not very nice. When Squirrelflight scolds Blossompaw, Millie disrespects Squirrelflight. She also lacks empathy towards other characters and has a habit of taking her emotions out on her clanmates. Perhaps, if she grew and changed a bit; I could like her.

    • I despise Millie! You have a very good point in your comment: Millie really doesnā€™t have a loving relationship with any of her kids!

  • Nothing in her interactions with her other children showed that she loved them. She was angry and apathetic when Blossomfall was sick and hurt. Bumblestripe seems to be afraid of her. When he takes Briarlight out for some fresh air in Omen of the Stars Sign of the Moon, he is afraid Millie will find out. Cinderheart advises that it is best not to let her find out and Briarlight lies to protect her brother. If she can spare time away from Briarlight to go on patrol, why can’t she spare a moment for Blossomfall and Bumblestripe? What is stopping her from being kind and loving when she gets the opportunity to interact with her other children?

In the books following the Omen of the stars series, she doesn’t interact with her other children at all, and they don’t interact with her.

    • Millie= BAD MOTHER.
