GrayXMillie: Why you should re-think hating it! by Sparktooth

Sparktooth defends Graystripe and Millie.

Hey bloggers! Sparktooth here! This is my first article and I’m going to be discussing, analysing, defending, and sharing my opinion on one of the most unpopular ships (but one of my favorites): Graystripe and Millie! I kept wondering why people hated this ship and Millie herself. Let’s see if you judge GrayXMillie or even Millie as harshly after reading this.

I’ll start where it all began, when the two cats met. If you remember at this time, Graystripe had recently been captured by Twolegs, and taken away from his home in Thunderclan. In the manga, it does a brilliant job of showing how lost and confused he feels. He dreams of being back in the forest, while he’s trapped in an unfamiliar Twoleg nest, alone and all his exits blocked. When he finally gets out to explore and was beaten by Duke, Graystripe was depressed and thought he was losing his warrior instincts.
Then Millie came along, the first kittypet who had been nice to him. She shows him a forest that brings back memories of Thunderclan, and seemed eager to learn more about clan life. The two become inseparable training out there everyday. Remember, it was Millie’s suggestion that influenced Graystripe to find Thunderclan. Silverstream even visited him in a dream saying she approved of the two of them. Millie gave up the life she knew to be with him. In my opinion, that alone showed more devotion and love for Graystripe than Silverstream showed.

Some people get mad because Graystripe chose a former kittypet as a new mate; and some people get mad because he chose a new mate in the first place. People (or in this case, cats), have different ways of moving on. Graystripe was practically torn apart when Silverstream died, and he needed someone to show him love again. Plus, former kittypets aren’t bad; like Stormcloud or Firestar, who happens to be Graystripe’s best friend. Just think about that.

One thing that really bothers me about people who complain about them, is they get mad at Millie for not choosing a warrior name. Names don’t show loyalty or courage. I honestly admired Millie for the independence she had to ask to keep her old name. She even vowed she would remain loyal to Thunderclan until the day she joined Starclan, but was always known as Millie and wanted to keep it that way. Plus, Boulder did this same exact thing years before Millie, and I don’t hear many people complaining about him! Both of them helped their clans, and fought for them, isn’t that what matters?

Now to one of the major reasons, people claiming Millie β€˜neglects Bumblestripe and Blossomfall.’ Let’s look at it in her view. When Firestar got his nine lives, the life Brindleface gave him was to protect his clan like a mother protects her kits. Firestar expected it to be soft and sweet, but it was like burning fire, ready to fight to the death to protect anyone of his clanmates. Now, when Millie and Graystripe had kits, Millie just wanted to protect them like any caring mother. So imagine how frantic she felt when Briarlight’s legs were crushed under the tree. It made her blind to everything else. All a mother wants is for her kits to be safe.
This also comes into play when Millie yells at Blossomfall when she and Ivypool almost die in the tunnels. Already one her Millie’s kits almost died, so having another so close to death must’ve been like horror. Another example to add is when Millie snaps at Bramblestar saying if Briarlight isn’t saved in time, she would never forgive him. C’mon people, don’t act like you’ve never gotten angry and snapped at someone, saying things you didn’t mean. Keep in mind one of her kit’s lives was in danger at the moment. I’m pretty sure if Briarlight had died, Millie would’ve been devastated, but eventually she would’ve forgiven Bramblestar. She’s just a protective mother, even if it’s a little more β€˜tough love’ than we see some of the other queens treat their kits.

One last thing before I conclude. I just feel like GrayXMillie was a lot more planned and thought-out than GrayXSilver. Here’s how: Millie and Graystripe’s relationship developed over the course of several books (like Firestar and Sandstorm). Where Silverstream and Graystripe met, fell in love, and had kits in two books. It was too rushed and unrealistically fast. Plus, it’s no secret Graystripe has the same feelings for Millie. He fell in love with Silverstream as a young warrior. Even though I’m sure he still cares for her, that doesn’t mean he’s still in love after years. People in real life get remarried all the time, and Graystripe has Millie now. I have nothing against GrayXSilver or Silverstream herself; I just feel like Millie’s a more interesting character all around. She’s a great member to the clan, and completes Graystripe well; and that’s how I’ll always think of her.

  • Yessss!
I don’t know why people hate GrayxMillie
Could you analize BluexOak at some point maybe possibly?
    Just wondering =)

  • I disagree.

You never mentioned at all what Silverstream did. Graystripe and Silverstream both met with the knowledge that, if they were discovered, they would lose respect, possibly rank, and, even, their home. Silverstream would lose respect even more so, being leader’s single daughter.

You also didn’t mention that Silverstream gave up her life in order to be with Graystripe at her kitting. That alone shows a lot.

Plus, ever mentioned that Millie looks almost exactly like Silverstream? Or that Graystripe fawned over Silverstream and his kits more than he ever loved Millie’s kits?

I have parents that yell at me and sometimes curse at me, but they always get over it, unlike Millie, who kept on going without a single moment of caring.

You should also consider the fact that Graystripe moved to Silverstream’s Clan for his kits with her and always checked on them when he went back to ThunderClan even when they were warriors, but barely connected and spoke to his kits with Millie, especially when they became warriors?

    • Well, that is the problem when you compare books where Greystripe is one of the main characters to ones where he is just sometimes mentioned. Have we had any real FireXSand moments after arc 1? Greystripe was way more in center of the story back then and his actions always had an effect on Fireheart, the main character. Therefore his love story with Silverstream and him caring for his first two kits just got more twists and way more screentime. GreyXMillie just isn’t in the center of interest so much anymore. And we don’t know if he interacts with his son and daugthers, but just isn’t mentioned.
But I don’t think that he just forgot Silverstream. He just loves Millie about the same as her. This can be recognized in a single scene, when Millie started kitting. Greystripe told the medicine cats to save Millie over the kits if necesarry. He didn’t forget Silverstream’s death and he is still scarred by it, but he moved on afterwards, got happy again and is now thrown back to his traumatic moment (as proven by Jaypaw’s mindreading). He is desperate not to repeat this tragic story and wants Millie to survive this time at all cost.
I personally have no problem with both mates of his.

    • Sky, have you read my response to you on the article about Blossomfall by Ebonypaw? It answers some of your points.

      • Oops I’m sorry, not the article about Blossomfall. The article called ‘Defending Millie’ by Ebonypaw. They’re both by her that’s why I got confuzzled lol.

          • I’m sorry, Sky, but I don’t understand. It’s just a friendly debate, and I’m not really someone who likes to write mean and/or rude comments. It’s fine if you don’t want to check it, it’s just the way you typed it that made me confused. Why don’t you want to check it?

            • Sorry, I wasn’t trying to be mean……………. I was just rushed in the car…………………… I didn’t know what to say, just that I don’t want to go back and check it. I’m too lazy πŸ˜›

              • Oh, that makes more sense. πŸ™‚ I didn’t think you were trying t be mean, I just got confuzzled.

    • I don’t see how Silverstream sacrificed her life. She was foolish to think that kitting away from a medicine cat would be okay. She should’ve thought about the consequences and her kits. I don’t think she knew she was going to die, but if she did, she should’ve thought about her father. Crookedstar lost almost everyone he had, and Silverstream was all he had left. Silverstream decided to betray Crookedstar behind his back, and when he did find out Silverstream was a traitor, she ignored his words and told him the Warrior Code should change.

      • Also Silverstream and Millie look a bit different, but the reason they’re a bit similar is because of Vicky’s friend’s cat.

        • I always thought that Millie had yellow eyes until I looked her up on warriors wiki……..and found that she looks almost exactly the same as Silverstream. I guess Graystripe really likes silver tabbies with blue eyes. Also, Millie looks exactly like my uncle’s cat, who is also called Millie. (The cat, not my uncle.)

          • My mom told me this. But most of the time, when someone gets remarried, their spouse will a lot of the time look like their other one. (Does that make sense?) Because everyone has something they are attracted too. If that makes sense. This just states, that Graystripe is attracted too silver tabbies.

          • Millie has also been cited to be a light gray tabby (And that’s what she’s listed as in the Warriors Wiki) and doesn’t have black stripes like Silverstream does.

    • And I have to dissagree with what you dissagreed about, Sky.

I don’t know what you mean by ‘You never mentioned at all what Silverstream did.’ I’ll admit Silverstream and Graystripe going behind their Clans backs to see each other is pretty sweet. But I can’t really think of anything Silverstream did that was more than what Millie did, when Millie gave up the life she knew to be with him. But Silverstream didn’t ‘give up her life in order to be with Graystripe at her kitting.’ She never chose to die. It was a tragic accident that she lost all her blood while kitting.

And all this talk about Silverstream being the leader’s daughter. I’ve never really saw that as giving a cat higher standards in the Clan. Like with Squirrelflight and Leafpool. They were the daughters of Firestar, and they never got the ‘special treatment’ that Silverstream apparently got. Even in the Warriors Ultimate Guide, it said something about how since she was the daughter of Crookedstar, it made her very favored by her Clanmates. Is it just me, or does that sound like Silverstream was a bit…spoiled?

Why do people make such a big deal about her yelling at Blossomfall? Blossomfall was being foolish, running around in the caves when she knew it was dangerous. All of ThunderClan thought Hollyleaf was killed by them, and Blossomfall knew that; but she went anyway, dragging Ivypool with her. Millie had more than just a right to yell at her. And I know a lot of the fandom thinks she pays too much attention t Briarlight, but Millie also has a good reason for that, too. Briarlight almost died two times as a kit, once from greencough and another from an adder, and then almost a third time when she broke her spinal cord. So of course Millie would be very overprotective of her kits, especially Briarlight!

And I know I should’ve considered when Graystripe went to RiverClan after Silverstream’s death. But he was destroyed when she died, and believed his kits would be happiest growing in their mother’s Clan. Of course, a good father wouldn’t leave his kits in a different Clan to be raised by cats who aren’t their kin. So Graystripe stayed to watch his kits grow. But Graystripe is rooted to the forest and deeply as the oaks, and went back to ThunderClan. He had no kin left. He needed a cat to love again. So then he met Millie, and I’m sure you know the rest.

Plus, Millie doesn’t look exactly like Silverstream. In the manga, she’s a silver cat with blue eyes AND a lighter stomach with paws.

So that’s my opinion for you. πŸ™‚

      • Leafpool just had to become a warrior, not get banished when the truth was revealed. Favored enough? Plus, Silverstream would have lost respect had the truth come out.

    • Good points, Sky πŸ˜‰
You sit and weave your lies, like a fox trots through the night.

  • Just about the 5th paragraph (about Millie’s name) Here’s a quote from Firestar to support that: “Loyalty is what matters, and that exists now, not in the past. Loyalty has to be proved every day, in every piece of fresh-kill brought back for the Clan, every claw mark on our enemies, every patrol, every training session.” – Sunset pg 240

    • Oh yeah I didn’t mind that she kept her kittypet name. I was only curious of what it might be/could’ve been, not that she should have one.

  • Omg it’s finally published!! πŸ˜€ I’m so glad with how it turned out. I enjoyed reading the comments and will reply to more to come.

  • I agree with everything (Millie is great), but I will point out that Briarlight broke her spinal cord, not her legs (Which gave Millie an even bigger reason to worry, since breaking your spinal cord is fatal).

    • Oh shoot, I meant to type that, not legs. I must’ve been thinking about Cinderpelt or something. XD

  • Wonderful article, Sparktooth! πŸ˜€ I liked how you defended them in the article! They’re also one of my favorite ships too! πŸ˜‰

    • Agreed.

(tbh I don’t really ship him with Silverstream or Millie. Though I literally balled my eyes out when Silverstream died even though I never really liked the “breaking warrior code” so…..)
