Ebonypaw shares their opinion on Fernsong and Ivypool’s relationship.
I’ve seen a lot of hate on the FernXIvy (FernsongXIvypool) ship. I personally don’t mind it at all. IMO, it’s probably my favorite out of all Ivypool ships. In this article, I will defend this ship.
They’re Related
I don’t see this as a problem. While incest is not okay with humans, it is normal with cats because they don’t care. The whole Clan is pretty much related, so issues like becoming mates with a cousin isn’t a big issue in this series (Even so, sibling pairings should still be avoided. Looking at you, Willowpelt and Patchpelt). Even so, Fernsong and Ivypool are third cousins, which is farther away from being related than most couples in this series. Tigerstar 4 and Dovewing are second cousins, Bramblestar and Squirrelflight are also second cousins, Lilyheart and Snowbush are cousins, etc.
There’s A Whole Prophecy About Them Being Related
Like I said before, cats don’t really care if their mate is related to them. I also don’t see any hate for the popular HollyXIvy ship even though there’s also a prophecy about them being related.
Age Difference
There’s only a two year age difference. There are more cats with a larger age gap. Spottedleaf and Firestar had a three year age difference, Thornclaw and Blossomfall have about a five and a half year age difference, and Pinestar is older than Leopardfoot’s parents. No cat in this series really has a problem with it, because like being related, they don’t care.
Ivypool Is Independent!
Personally, Ivypool always struck me as a dependent person/cat mostly because of her (s) annoying (/s) behavior in the first three books in OOTS. She always wanted attention, and while she definitely matured, I’m sure her whole personality didn’t flip just because she was found out that the Dark Forest was evil.
I’m Fine With Ivypool Being A Single Mom, Just Kill Off Fernsong
After all Ivypool went through? She was forced to spy and risk her life on the Dark Forest, risked fighting the Dark Forest, found out her dad with also training with the Dark Forest (For some reason), dealt with the rogues, her apprentice almost died, and her sister ran off only to come back and live in another Clan. If Ivypool is happy with Fernsong, then Fernsong should be kept alive.
Good thing there weren’t major spoilers in this article! 😛 I haven’t read AVOS yet, so I don’t have an opinion on FernXIvy. But you seem to make great points.
Great reasoning! I’m still neutral about it, though. 🙂
I’m still on the fence about IvyFern 😛
I’m a BlossomIvy shipper and never really pictured Ivypool having a mate in cannon, but from what I’ve seen of Fernsong he seems like he could be a good fit for Ivypool. I mean, I like his character so far. He’s one of the more feminine male characters that we’ve seen, and it’s cool to have an example of a male character that is comfortable with not being traditionally masculine. I wouldn’t really want him killed off, but I think it could be cool if they ended up splitting up after they have kits and then just end up being friends (there aren’t really any examples in Warriors of “divorced” parents that get along after they split). Or maybe just splitting up before they have kits and still being on good terms (it seems like every break-up in Warriors has been dramatic and it would be nice to see couple decide to break-up just because they work better together as friends).
Anyway, even though I like the two character’s on their own (or, at least, I like what I’ve seen from Fernsong so far) I’d have to see more of their dynamic together before I decide whether I like them together as a couple.
I never thought I’d like ivypool having a mate and I was furious when I saw she had one but since I realized how amazing, subversive and perfect her and fernsong are they’ve become my favorite couple and fernsong is my favorite character!
You have a good point! I agree completely about the age and family/cousin thing.
I just think having Fernsong for a mate was kind of a letdown. I mean come on, it would have been so much cooler if Ivypool became mates with Hawkfrost then used Fernsong like her Bluestar used Thrushpelt.
I remember the whole SquirrelxBramble or Ash and this kind of reminds me of it. Ivypool could use someone to feed her fire while Fernsong is kinda just like putting one of those heavy blankets on it.
Sorry, this is just me being bitter about a thing that didn’t happen. It would be a cool plot twist though!
Hawkfrost x Ivypool is a VERY toxic relationship; He used her all of his life and he states that he only pictures her as a daughter.
Fern x Ivy is much more healthy. It would’ve been cool if they werent toxic together but even then Fern x Ivy is just more appealing to me.
Fernsong is a good boi
