Why Shadowclan SHOULD Be Disbanded (Darkest Night and Tigerheart’s Shadow Spoilers) by Freespirit

Shadowclan. The ‘evil’ clan. The one which all of the other clans hate and are scared of. Tall Shadow’s creation. It is one of the most interesting clans as whenever they are portrayed, they are usually the antagonist. I mean, think about it!

Shadowstar was said to be killed in a battle she started, after DotC

In TOS (the original series! None of this Prophecies begin nonsense!) Shadowclan was the ultimate evil prior to Bloodclan.

This clan is bad, apparently. But it’s not evil. In what I call, Star Clans The Old Clans, the clan was RESPECTED for being different. While it was still a bit aggresive, the clan had its own history and traditions. It was an actual clan! I love my Headcannon EU where Shadowclan is considered to be dark and cold, but not evil. All of this changed during Yellowfang’s Secret when Raggedstar’s son, Brokenstar became leader.

Brokenstar was evil. He turned the clan away from it’s glory days and twisted it into an embodiment of corruption. After he was forcefully removed from power ) the clan never truly recovered. It began to suffer under Nightstar’s leadership, for he was too weak to lead. And then Tigerstar came and destroyed the clan again. Under Blackstar, it recovered a bit, but since clans seem to have a habit of appointing terrible deputies (imagine Sharpclaw as Skyclan’s leader.) Rowanstar’s leadership was weak and fraught with difficulties, leaving a scattered clan and Tigerstar the Second to pick up the pieces. But should he?

I think he shouldn’t.

While Shadowclan has been around since the dawn, recent difficulties have caused it too collapse. It’s history of being a bit colder was turned to being evil, it’s surviving cats being defiant and far too proud to lead. And Rowanstar’s last act was to destroy the clan. Everything is against it returning. Including me. Here is why.

1 There isn’t enough Territory! The lake area is far too small to fit 3 clans that use trees too hunt. Riverclan and Windclan haven’t given up any Territory to compensate. Sadly, Territory is important, and without it the cats can’t hunt. If Shadowclan is too weak to hold onto it’s Territory, Skyclan can do a much better job.

2 SKYCLAN is there! Skyclan And Shadowclan are both small weak clans. If they combine like they have in Darkest Night, then both clans will over many moons be far greater then they were before. Maybe even change the name to something else and recall Shadow and Sky in memoriam. Maybe Freeclan or Spiritclan or Freespiritclan.! Joking aside, there are many great clan idea names this fandom has come up with. Or just call it Shadowskyclan or Skyshadowclan.

3 The Erin’s made Shadowkit. SHADOWkit. The Erin’s don’t make Thunderkit or Riverkit or Windkit or Skykit. It’s not done, probably as it would be confusing to the reader. So why introduce Shadowkit now, if not foreSHADOWing Shadowclan’s ultimate demise.

So those are the three reasons that Shadowclan should be disbanded. Maybe in the future something will happen, but their is no reason for Shadowclan to live. Tigerstar the Second should take over for Leafstar, if they would kill her off. But Shadowclan has failed. A shadow cannot afford to be lightened. When light chases it away, it is scattered. Only if they remove the light will the shadow return. But shadow needs a bit of light to make it. Too much and it’s scattered. This is what is happening with Shadowclan. Too much light has come. Shadowclan would need the death of another clan to survive. If this doesn’t happen, then Shadowclan will be destroyed, like it should be.

  • Your point about Shadowkit is interesting but very likely to be UNTRUE. Shadowkit was named after ShadowClan, not for it’s demise!

ShadowClan IS NOT the evil Clan!!!!!!! They’ve just had an unlucky line of terrible leaders. Frankly, I’m glad that ShadowClan is a Clan again because they’re too proud to join Clans. Any other Clan, maybe. But not proud ShadowClan.

    • I’d also like to say that I’m very sure that these tales of “evil Shadowstar who started all these wars!” and “be a good kit or Shadowstar will come” were fake and created by the Clans who feared ShadowClan. Why did they fear ShadowClan, you ask? Because ShadowClan either had a bad leader(at no fault of the Clan itself) or because they just thought that cats who live in the shadows deserve to be feared. If you’ve read even a bit of DotC, you’ll find Shadowstar/Tall Shadow to be one of the most evenheaded, kind, compassionate cats around.

  • I completely disagree. Sure, ShadowClan has had a few bumps in the road, and they’ve had a bad reputation for evil leaders, but that does not under any circumstances mean that the Clan is evil. If you disband ShadowClan, you destroy the legacy that Shadowstar had built seasons upon seasons before. ShadowClan can always be redeemed. But if you destroy the Clan, the Clan that so many warriors in the past had fought for would just be gone. If you’ve read River of Fire, (which I know when you wrote this article you hadn’t), ShadowClan did not combine that well with SkyClan. They fought a lot. And as Sky said in the comment above, the theory about Shadowkit is very likely to be untrue. And the territory was never mentioned to be too small for five Clans. Sure, it might take some adjusting, but it can still be done.

    • I agree. In addition, why should SkyClan prevail while ShadowClan dies? Is ShadowClan less worthy?

And Shadowstar was such an amazing cat…

      • Shadowstar was great. I think besides Riverstar, she was the calmest, most compassionate leader out of the original five. She did nothing that would consider ShadowClan to be an “evil Clan”.

  • In Darkest Night (I think) Skyclan and Shadowclan did band together, and it didn’t work out so well, it never would have worked out, and think Shadowkit is there to bring Shadowclan back together, there’s no reason to think otherwise. Shadowclan is just a clan with a history of bad leaders, it gives them character, and I think they should stay one clan.

  • this indeed an interesting article but i disagree about ShadowClan disbanding they did have bad leaders but not all of their leaders are evil there was bad leaders in the past from the other clans too yes some were not as bad as ShadowClan’s but we don’t know what kinds of leaders the other clans had in the past, and if ShadowClan combined with SkyClan or any other clan the ShadowClan cats wouldn’t fit in because cats from the clans have different opinions, views and personalities depending on which clan they grew up in.

  • ShadowClan isn’t evil or bad. The entire plot of AVOS was bringing SkyClan back because “there should always be five Clans.” Disbanding ShadowClan doesn’t make that work. Most of the main cats from ShadowClan have been antagonists, but that’s because ThunderClan is usually the main Clan. There have been antagonists from ThunderClan. If ShadowClan was the main Clan at the beginning, there would be a lot more good/neutral characters to go by. And yeah, they were set up as the stereotypical “bad” Clan in the first few books, but that was when the series was first starting out and they shattered that illusion early in the first book when Firepaw and Graypaw meet up with the ShadowClan elders. Shadowstar was never the main conflict. She has always been a very good character and leader, and she almost had a POV in one of the DoTC books. ShadowClan has had some bad luck is all, but that’s no reason for them to disband. Think of all the innocent cats who would be losing a home, family, and life. Their lives would be completely uprooted just because they’ve had a few bad leaders. That’s not fair at all.

  • None of the clans are evil. But there will always be clan tensions. And on occasion, bad leaders.

However, with Tigerheart becoming the new Tigerstar, things are looking up for Shadowclan. Even if Shadowclan is most likely going to a war with Skyclan. Considering the events of the last book. I won’t dig into that, cause I made the point before. But I will let you in on a secret…

I’m on team Shadowclan (sorry Violetshine, there’s still room for you over here on this team) for the first time ever! I’ve never rooted for Shadowclan, and now I’m 100% pro Shadowclan with Tigerstar-2 leading the way (still love you Thunderclan, Riverclan, and recently kind Windclan).

Also I disagree on the not enough territory point. Many of the clans (maybe all), can extend their territory backwards from the lake if they wanted to. From what Dovewing’s first mission with Lionblaze describes with the Beaver dam, there is still plenty of territory going backwards. But yeah, technically there is bound to be hard times coming with that many predators around the lake. Prey might become scarce. We’ll see.

  • The Shadowkit thing isn’t exactly a reason…
There is a cat in Bluestar’s Prophecy named WINDflight. Ahem. And he was from WindClan. So it is possible, and, therefore, not a point.

  • I completely disagree with you.
Yes, ShadowClan can be stubborn and fox-hearts at times, but so can the other clans!! Every clan has had bad leaders, for example, Pinestar! You could say ThunderClan is/are a bunch of cowardly kittypets because of him, but it doesn’t mean that they are. And every clan has made and makes mistakes, but so WHAT?
And you dare to bring Shadowpaw/sight into this?
It’s just a name, plus throughout the books there have been plenty of cats with names that start with the name of the clan. WINDflight, in WINDClan. Also, Shadowpaw was named after ShadowClan, to remind Tigerstar (the not-evil Tigerstar) of it.
Finally, if one clan is destroyed, then the other clans go down with it.
    Five clans or no clans.
One goes down, the others fall with it.

  • I don’t mean to be rude but I disagree with this I especially disagree with the last one because come on names don’t actually matter in the books.
