The Over-Use Of Suffixes and Horrible Names by Speckledpaw

Speckledpaw comments on some of the best uses of overused suffixes and one particular horrible name in the series. Medium spoilers for AVoS!

(This is my first article so give me some room to wiggle here :P) P.s I have read MOST of the Vision of Shadows books. I’ve read “The Apprentice’s Quest” “Thunder and Shadow” “Shattered Sky” and I THINK “Darkest Night”

Hello BlogClanners! I’m new to BlogClan, and I thought I would share some of my thoughts. Let’s get started.

There are many suffixes that are over-used, like -light or -shine and especially -heart. Of course there are cats who deserve these special suffixes like Brairlight, Cinderheart, and Brightheart. Suffixes like -light, -shine, and -heart are special and should only be given to cats who deserve them. These suffixes show that these cats have gone through something and have overcome it, therefore should only be used in special situations like Briarlight, Cinderheart, and Brightheart. Briarlight is paralyzed and can’t move her hind legs and tail, she’s turned this negative into a positive and its become a part of her character. Cinderheart is a reincarnation of Cinderpelt, Cinderpelt had fallen into a trap meant for Bluestar and had her hindleg twisted by a monster and could not become a warrior like her destiny was meant to be. So when she was killed by a badger protecting Sorreltail and her kits, Sorreltail names one of her kits after her and gave her soul new life in Cinderkit. Cinderheart had many challenges including questioning if she was meant to be a medicine cat after learning her extraordinary knowledge of herbs in her dreams. She deserved the suffix -heart because she gave new life to Cinderpelt and fulfilled Cinderpelt’s rightful destiny to be a warrior. Then, of course, there’s Brightheart as an apprentice went to fight the wild dog pack with Swiftpaw but had her face horribly scarred and witnessed the death of Swiftpaw. Then she had her name changed, by a depressed Bluestar, to Lostface which is later changed, by Firestar, to Brightheart. She clearly deserves it.

Then there are great cats like VioletShine who deserve the suffix but then you realize that its way over-used and she should be given a different suffix like -stalk or -leaf which would both suit her.

I-I can’t even begin to describe how angry I am about Twigpaw. She got the name TWIGBRANCH OF ALL THINGS -BRANCH HAD TO BE IT?!?! Great StarClan why?!? her sister got a wonderful name that described her perfectly…a-and then… THEN THERE’S TWIGBRANCH. The Erins could have at least spent more time coming up with a name that suited her. It’s the same thing twice! Okay…Okay……It’s a good name to be honest, if you think about it really hard and squint your eyes a bit…Twigbranch was always the shadow of her sister Violetshine and Violetshine was always better than her at pretty much everything (including their father’s affection) and then if you give her the suffix -branch it symbolizes that she grew stronger and found her place in the “tree”. She used the be a tiny little twig pushing through her shadow of her sister, and finally reached the sun and grew to be a mighty branch that found her place. But still, why not Twigsong or Twigfoo-…. yeah i get it now XD nothing really fits does it? Welp…I’m okay with it now. Hope you are too(i hope i didn’t spoil it for you D:)

  • *Self-consciously* I don’t really think -light is overused, I mean like how many cats have it? *Thinks* Hmmm, Briarlight, *insert others I forgot about*, *cough cough* my name… (Not a suffix but hey)

  • I agree with -shine and -heart, but -light really isn’t that overused. I think it’s only been used twice (Briairlight and Podlight)? Anyway, this was still a good article 🙂

  • -light isn’t really overused…

But I think that the reason behind Twigbranch makes it more acceptable – according to Kate, it is because she grew from a tiny twig to a strong branch.

  • Honestly, I’m willing to look the other way if it’s an overused suffix, but the name sounds great. Or if it has an awesome reason behind it.

  • Nice article, I agree! 🙂
Twigbranch is a horrible sounding name, but it does mean something nice.. but wwwhhhyyyy thooouuuugh 😛

  • I don’t really mind whether it’s over used when I make names, I just tend to do it more for the meaning behind it. Unless I’m making background characters

  • For me, it’s the prefixes that bug me, Examples, FLIPkit? THRIFTkit? POUNCEkit? BOUNCEfire? FLAXkit? HOPkit? You have got to be joking. Am I the only one who is torn at Dovewing leaving, I read all of the series before OotS (Shame on me I’m still reading it.) And while read T’S I was like oh, okay the cat that everyone complains about is gone, but now reading OotS
I’m thinking, why are people hating on her so much, she’s not actually a mary sue. (Though I know what having a sis like that is like, Her being an athletic star So I can sympathize with Ivypool.) In my opinion, Tennelle Flowers depicts her perfectly: https://www.redbubble.com/people/tennelleflowers/works/21869949-dovewing
Anyways back to the actual topic, I feel -Shine is extremely overused, Willowshine, Reedshine, Reedshine, Lakeshine, Pebbleshine, Puddleshine, Violetshine. Personally, I don’t get the fuss about Violetshine, there’s something about her character, I, just don’t like, I’m not exactly sure what it is but, I don’t get everyone’s obsession with her.

    • With the way suffixes are set up you’re bound to get a few that are overused. I’m glad that we’re trying to move away from things that are just fur, foot, wing, etc. as those aren’t super pretty sounding.

I mean Sparkpelt got Sparkpelt rather than a unique sounding name despite being Bramblestar and Squirrelflight’s daughter.

I feel like with warrior names it comes down to personal preference but as long as the name has a good ring to it I don’t mind. So while yes Twigbranch sounds silly, it does have a good ring to it.

People will argue we’ve strayed from the traditional names fur, foot, stripe, etc etc. but I kinda like the trend away from this we still see it but I like fall, shade, shine, heart, etc etc. The fun of warrior names is combining various prefixes and suffixes together to make a fun unique name. Half the fun of warriors has been seeing warrior names and re reading fan fiction of people who were forced to guess (ie the POT) what the apprentice’s names would be.

  • I’m with B-fire (and Sky) 🙂 This is why I’m ok with the name Twigbranch because it had/has a special reason behind it
