Ashfur the Villain of Love? by Sheeptail

Sheeptail takes a look at both sides of the Ashfur debate.

Art by Ashkey

Okay, first of all, THANK YOU SO MUCH! My first article about Millie was very well received and this whole article is thanks to Gingie go check them out! And, *cough* my youtube channel Phantom Gamer it’s the channel with the two floating eyes and a controller *cough*. Anyway, This article is about Ashfur and if he is evil or nice. I am in the middle so I will try to be as unbiased as I can!
Also Spoiler Alert!
Reasons Why People Love Ashfur
Because he was a nice and caring cat and would do anything for Squirrleflight (my most hated character.) but when he found out she was using him to make Brambleclaw jealous it broke his heart.
His Clan loves him even though the readers might not, ThunderClan loves Ashfur. When he died everyone was talking about him! The Clan wanted vengeance so obviously there’s something to love about Ashfur.
Why People Hate Ashfur
He NEARLY killed Jayfeather, Hollyleaf and Lionblaze, 1, there was no proof that he was going to kill them if he MEANT to kill them it would hurt Squirrleflight MORE that her sister’s kits died that she meant to protect. Also if it was different cats like… Hollytuft, and Leafshade no one would care.
A lot of people think Ashfur should go to the Dark Forest but that is dumb if I told my friend what Ashfur did he or she (it’s 2018 gender equality) would say he would go to the Dark Forest but a TRUE Warrior fan can see that Ashfur is a nice and caring cat. EVEN STARCLAN AGREES! I see why people don’t like him but to call him evil is dumb.
Anyway Thank you for Reading Tell Me your thoughts in the comments below and tell me what I should do next. I know that this is not a very popular opinion but still don’t be mean if you disagree tell me why in the comments below! Thanks to Gingie for the suggestion! This wouldn’t have been possible if you hadn’t commented!
Sheeptail (and Phantom Gamer) Out! Bye! See you later!

  • A person doesn’t have to dislike or like a character to be a TRUE warriors fan. We ALL are (at least those who still love and read Warriors). We all have different opinions, and that’s ok. 🙂 Who said anything about loving Ashfur to be a true Warriors fan? Sure he was caring and nice but that doesn’t excuse what he did (what he tried to do). Actions speak louder than words. He says he loves Squirrelflight but if he did he would have let her go and allowed her to be happy, not to and try to murder her father and “kits.”

But anyway I really don’t have too much of an opinion on him. However if Squirrelflight gets involved I will will highly defend her at all costs (but it doesn’t mean I hate Ashfur, it means I love Squirrelflight 😛).

  • Okay… *start of argument*

He nearly killed them and very well meant to, he only stopped because Squirrelflight offered him something better that would destroy her life, because Squirrelflight didn’t want those kits to die. By spilling the secret it WAS worse because it wouldn’t JUST affect Squirrelflight, it’d ruin the lives of Leafpool, Brambleclaw, and the three as well. In addition, well DUH we would care if it was some other cat, but another DUH is that the Erins wouldn’t make it about another cat. Authors don’t just randomly do big scenes with relatively unknown cats, THAT would be weird. Also, where exactly did Squirrelflight even use him? She wanted Ashfur as a friend, it was Ashfur who wanted more. A she-cat and a tom can be friends without liking each other. Also, idk why you said that you were in the middle ground bc at the end you basically called all Ashfur haters stupid and you even admitted to hating Squirrelflight at the beginning of your article?

I don’t care if StarClan agrees, I’ll argue against StarClan (which tbh probably only exists in a book, so it makes it a kinda hilarious point to say that StarClan agrees). *end argument*

Yes, I am a complete Ashfur hater. He is my LEAST favorite character, and it doesn’t help that people actually think that he’s innocent for taking one of his leader’s lives and nearly killing three innocent cats.

  • I disagree with the point you’re trying to make tbh. Squirrelflight never used Ashfur to make Brambleclaw jealous. She needed someone to talk to while she was fighting with him. I reread (well, mostly skimmed through chapters for scenes of Squirrelflight/Ashfur interactions) Twilight and Sunset, and there was nothing to show that Squirrelflight was using Ashfur to get Brambleclaw jealous. In fact, it seemed like she was trying to get away from Brambleclaw Here’s the scene in the book that tells me that Squirrelflight was never using Ashfur and just wanted to be friends with him (ergo, she didn’t want to make Brambleclaw jealous in the first place):

““Look, Ashfur.” Squirrelflight’s voice told Brambleclaw that she was trying hard to hold her temper. “I really care about you as a friend, but I don’t want any more than that.”

“But I love you!” Ashfur protested. More hesitantly, he added, “We’d be great together, Squirrelflight, I know we would.”

Brambleclaw felt a stab of sympathy for the gray warrior. He remembered how he had felt when he thought he had lost Squirrelflight’s affection.

I’m sorry,” Squirrelflight went on. “I never meant to hurt you, but Brambleclaw—well, I think StarClan has destined us to be together.”

“I don’t know how you can say that!” There was the hint of a snarl in Ashfur’s voice. “You said yourself that it’s impossible to trust a cat with Brambleclaw’s heritage. He’s a great cat, I know, but he is still Tigerstar’s son.”

Brambleclaw’s feelings of sympathy vanished instantly. He unsheathed his long, curved claws and sank them into the ground. Would he never be judged for what he was, instead of who his father had been? Worse, would Squirrelflight be unable to trust him because Tigerstar was his father?

“I’ll judge Brambleclaw by his own actions,” she retorted hotly, “not by something that other cats did long before I was born.”

“I’m only thinking of you, Squirrelflight,” Ashfur meowed. “I can remember Tigerstar. His paws were red with the blood of innocent cats. You know that he murdered my mother to lure a pack of dogs to our camp?”

Squirrelflight murmured something Brambleclaw couldn’t catch, then went on more clearly, “But that doesn’t mean Brambleclaw will turn out like his father.”” – Sunset

Squirrelflight never meant to hurt Ashfur, and she never loved him. Was she supposed to force herself to love him just for Ashfur’s sake? Squirrelflight is allowed to be with who she wants, and she was never using Ashfur on purpose. Don’t know how you got to that conclusion when nothing in the text implies it, it only shows that Squirrelflight and Ashfur are good friends until this scene. Secondly, Ashfur was intent on trying to kill Lionblaze, Hollyleaf, and Jayfeather. Here’s what Ashfur said in the fire scene in Long Shadows if you don’t believe me:

““You don’t understand.” Ashfur looked at her as if he was seeing her for the first time; his voice was puzzled and petulant. “This is the only way to make you feel the same pain that you caused me. You tore my heart out when you chose Brambleclaw over me. Anything I did to you would never hurt as much. But your kits . . .” He looked through the flames at Hollyleaf and her brothers, his eyes narrowing to dark blue slits. “If you watch them die, then you’ll know the pain I felt.”” – Long Shadows

Again, Ashfur literally said that he was going to kill them. He’d already killed Firestar with the help of Hawkfrost, so he’s already guilty of murder (this is because of Squirrelflight, who’d put him down gently). And Ashfur didn’t know they were Leafpool’s kits. He never knew. All he knew about them was that after Squirrelflight had told them they weren’t her kits, they weren’t her kits. It didn’t matter to him any more. And murder is still murder; it would’ve mattered just as much if it were a background character we know nothing about because they were murdered.

Ashfur should go to the DF because he purposely tried to kill cats. Attempted murder means that the person in question was intent on murdering someone because they wouldn’t do it in the first place if they had no intent on bringing the victim(s) to harm. Ashfur was a kind and caring cat, true, but after Squirrelflight put him down gently, he wallowed in self-pity and look where it got him to. He murdered Firestar (took one life) and attempted to kill Lionblaze, Hollyleaf, and Jayfeather. He refused to move on long after it was in the past and tried to murder four cats (one being successful), yet he got rewarded for it. Overall? Ashfur spent a good portion of his life being bitter and upset over Squirrelflight not loving him; should we not take that into account? StarClan agreeing is an invalid argument here- Ashfur was very close to going to the DF by most likely a centimeter. Most of StarClan wanted him to end up in the DF. StarClan doesn’t agree on everything either. From what we saw in the books, Yellowfang was the only cat who supported him being in StarClan. Ashfur may not be evil, but he is not good either. A “true Warriors fan” doesn’t have to think/see that Ashfur is a nice and caring cat, nor do they have to think he belongs in StarClan or anything but evil. It’s all a matter of opinion, after all.

  • Also at the OP. I hate Ashfur with all my heart because of what he did and being rewarded for his bad actions (Which he is, the reason he got into Starclan was entirely because Vicky pitied him, ignoring the fact that because he didn’t get a girl he tried to kill two prophecy cats, one a MEDICINE CAT, and TOOK ONE OF FIRESTAR’S LIVES in an attempt to perma-kill him JUST to hurt Squirrelflight which is messed up) but that shouldn’t make me any less of a Warriors fan because of that.
Having a different opinion on a character you like doesn’t change that and it’s wrong to judge someone as a fan for having that. >.>
Ashfur is a murderer yandere of a cat and doesn’t deserve Starclan at all just because he WAS nice before, he still did horrible things and would’ve done worse.

  • I loved Ashfur for his choices. It was generally shocking to find out he helped Hawkfrost 7 books later. He lived a long hard life without his mother. However, he was rash in his decision, leading to his downfall. I’m glad i’m not the only one who don’t want Squirrelstar. Bramblestar feels weak for me, and I feel like it will be the same for his mate

  • I’m also neutral on Ashfur. I ship Ashfur x Thrushpelt, but let’s all agree that Thrushpelt is a much better cat than Ashfur. Ashfur should’ve taken up Squirrelflight’s offer to be just friends, instead of going crazy.

  • REALLY? After all that he did, you DEFEND HIM??? I believe that whether Ashfur was a good cat or not is a matter of opinion, so I still call myself a warriors fan even though I hate Ashfur with a burning passion. Think about it in human terms, he’s basically an abusive ex-boyfriend. He got rewarded with Starclan out of PITY, he MURDERED, and he didn’t once get punished, because Firestar is a Gary Stu, but I’m not complaining, I personally love Mary Sue’s and Gary Stue’s. But you said you wouldn’t state your opinion and just use facts, then that idea goes down the drain… I personally don’t like Squirrelflight a bunch, because I like Leafpool, but Squirrelflight is still a good character with development and I respect that.

  • He should’ve went to the Dark Forest. He tried to kill Firestar and planned with a evil cat, Hawkfrost. He tried to kill Squirrelflight and her so called “kits” when all she did was just tell him that she didn’t wanna be with him. Good article though!
