What I Think of Ashfur by Wishpaw

Wishpaw shares their opinion on Ashfur.

Hello everyone, this is my second article and I am here to explore the horrifying depths… of the Ashfur controversy. Before I begin, let’s see both sides of the scale. The first group is the Ashfur haters. They think he was overreacting and making Squirrelflight’s family suffer was immoral. The second one maintains that he did not deserve rejection and Squirrelflight only used him to get back at Brambleclaw. I will go down on my evidence of the article and what I think personally.

What I think
For some evidence, let’s look at Ashfur’s rejection.
““Look, Ashfur.” Squirrelflight’s voice told Brambleclaw that she was trying hard to hold her temper. “I really care about you as a friend, but I don’t want any more than that.”
“But I love you!” Ashfur protested. More hesitantly, he added, “We’d be great together, Squirrelflight, I know we would.”
Brambleclaw felt a stab of sympathy for the gray warrior. He remembered how he had felt when he thought he had lost Squirrelflight’s affection.
“I’m sorry,” Squirrelflight went on. “I never meant to hurt you, but Brambleclaw—well, I think StarClan has destined us to be together.”
“I don’t know how you can say that!” There was the hint of a snarl in Ashfur’s voice. “You said yourself that it’s impossible to trust a cat with Brambleclaw’s heritage. He’s a great cat, I know, but he is still Tigerstar’s son.”
Brambleclaw’s feelings of sympathy vanished instantly. He unsheathed his long, curved claws and sank them into the ground. Would he never be judged for what he was, instead of who his father had been? Worse, would Squirrelflight be unable to trust him because Tigerstar was his father?
“I’ll judge Brambleclaw by his own actions,” she retorted hotly, “not by something that other cats did long before I was born.”
-Sunset, I don’t know the exact page.

From this quote, we can see that the idea that Squirrelflight was rude when they were breaking up is false. She even offered the idea of them still being friends. We hear things like “I’m sorry”, “I never meant to hurt you.”, and “I really care about you.” She put him down as gently as he could. Whereas it is proven he DEFINITELY intended harm. To demonstrate:

““You don’t understand.” Ashfur looked at her as if he was seeing her for the first time; his voice was puzzled and petulant. “This is the only way to make you feel the same pain that you caused me. You tore my heart out when you chose Brambleclaw over me. Anything I did to you would never hurt as much. But your kits . . .” He looked through the flames at Hollyleaf and her brothers, his eyes narrowing to dark blue slits. “If you watch them die, then you’ll know the pain I felt.””

So, whereas we see Squirrelflight meant no harm, we can see that Ashfur…did. And another thing, he also conspired with Hawkfrost to kill Firestar, as well as taking advantage of his mentorship to Lionpaw to hurt him.
But enough of that. Let’s look at some toms in similar positions and compare.
Bumblestripe:…moved on.
Spotted Fur:…moved on.
Thrushpelt:…moved on.
Ashfur: Attempts murder on four cats and tortures some others.

Suffice it to say my verdict is what he did was wrong. But, do not fear, nobody has been silenced. You can vote on your opinion here:

I’m neutral on Ashfur, but great article!!! I love how you used an actual book quote to defend Squirrelflight. I totally agree with you on that!

Nice article 😸! I always hate Ashfur, he actually had many better choice to choose after Squirrelflight’s “rejection”, but he just chose the worst one, which was to become a murderer 😾. I think Squirrelflight had already settled the issue in the best way she could think of, so it’s mostly Ashfur’s problem that he wanted to kill. The book can prove that.

I love Ashfur AS a villain. He’s honestly my favorite warriors villain. I like him in the same way people like Mapleshade or Scourge or Tigerstar. He was a really bad person, but a really damn good villain! 😉

He kinda overreacted, but he did his job in the story. At least he has that going for him.

That’s what made him a good villain in my opinion 😉

He’s one of the most badly-written characters in the series. There is no build up to his villainy, and the writers try to justify his horrific actions with such poor logic. Him serving a purpose doesn’t make him a good character.

He is a good villain, but I still hate him. 😛

(Also, mods, there’s a bad word in the post I’m replying to.)

I think that seeing Squirrelflight and Brambleclaw together every day was like the wound being cut open every single day. So… I am neutral on Ashfur.
