Briarpaw connects Memories by Maroon 5 to Squirrelight’s Hope. Spoilers for the superedition!
Hi! It’s Briar back with another article! I haven’t made an article in a while, and I thought I’d do one using a theme song for warriors.
(BEFORE YOU GO ON, BE WARNED THAT THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS FOR SQUIRRELFLIGHT’S HOPE. READ AT YOUR OWN RISK.)
So, anyway, I was listening to this song in the car on my way to school, and I realized it perfectly matched Leafpool’s death scene from Squirrelflight’s Hope. Yes, the song is about making toasts, but apart from that, it fits pretty much perfectly into Leafpool’s death scene. In this article, I am going to share with you my analyzing of the song lyrics and how they fit into the scenes from Squirrelflight’s Hope, which I have at my side as I’m writing this.
So, the first part:
Here’s to the ones that we got
Cheers to the wish you were here, but you’re not
‘Cause the drinks bring back all the memories
Of everything we’ve been through
What that part is saying is that Squirrelflight and Leafpool have been through so much together. They were littermates, and felt an extra special bond with each other. They could feel each other’s pain, but the two of them were polar opposites. In The Ultimate Guide, it compares Squirrelflight and Leafpool to fire (Squirrelflight: energetic, stubborn, sassy, has a bit of an attitude) and water (Leafpool: calm, caring, kind, and gentle). They were with each other to the end, in the rockslide. And let us not forget that the prologue of SH was of Squirrelflight remembering their time as apprentices, as ‘paws. We got to see Squirrelpaw and Leafpaw for the last time, which I was really happy about since I loved the time when they were.
Now, the next part:
Toast to the ones here today
Toast to the ones that we lost on the way
‘Cause the drinks bring back all the memories
And the memories bring back, memories bring back you
Again, same thing. Only maybe here they’re thinking about those close to them whom they lost. Firestar. Sandstorm. Hollyleaf. (And one of Bramblestar’s lives, gthough I wasn’t sure if that counted.)
Next part:
There’s a time that I remember, when I did not know no pain
When I believed in forever, and everything would stay the same
Now my heart feel like December when somebody say your name
‘Cause I can’t reach out to call you, but I know I will one day, yeah
Again, remembering back when they were apprentices with no care in the world, which Squirrelflight remembers throughout Squirrelflight’s Hope.
Next part:
Everybody hurts sometimes
Everybody hurts someday, aye aye
But everything gon’ be alright
Go and raise a glass and say, aye
And that part I think is about Squirrelflight’s pain at Leafpool leaving her life.
Here’s the next part, which is also the chorus:
Here’s to the ones that we got
Cheers to the wish you were here, but you’re not
‘Cause the drinks bring back all the memories
Of everything we’ve been through
Toast to the ones here today
Toast to the ones that we lost on the way
‘Cause the drinks bring back all the memories
And the memories bring back, memories bring back you
Doo doo, doo doo, doo doo
Doo doo, doo doo, doo doo, doo doo
Doo doo, doo doo, doo doo doo
Memories bring back, memories bring back you
(Yeah, It’s kinda long.)
Squirrelflight is remembering all of their good times together, but is also thinking about “the ones here today”, probably whom Leafpool set into the world: in other words, Lionblaze and Jayfeather. Maybe Lionblaze’s kits, too. Remember that Cinderheart is still pregnant with them at this time, but they are born not too long after Leafpool’s death and the end of Squirrelflight’s Hope.
Here’s our next part, which is another verse:
There’s a time that I remember when I never felt so lost
When I felt all of the hatred was too powerful to stop (ooh, yeah)
Now my heart feel like an ember and it’s lighting up the dark
I’ll carry these torches for ya that you know I’ll never drop, yeah
This is Squirrelflight remembering the incident between Lionblaze, Jayfeather, and Hollyleaf: acting as a foster mom and then having them hate her in turn, along with Leafpool, who was their real mother. The “hatred that’s too powerful to stop” was mostly that of Leafpool’s kits, but also of the rest of the clan for a while. The next two lines, “Now my heart feel like an ember and it’s lighting up the dark, I’ll carry these torches for ya that you know I’ll never drop, yeah” is about Squirrelflight vowing to stay loyal to Leafpool, no matter what, which she did do.
Our last bits of the song, which is the chorus and a repeat of before:
Everybody hurts sometimes
Everybody hurts someday, aye aye
But everything gon’ be alright
Go and raise a glass and say, aye
Here’s to the ones that we got (oh oh)
Cheers to the wish you were here, but you’re not
‘Cause the drinks bring back all the memories
Of everything we’ve been through (no, no)
Toast to the ones here today (aye)
Toast to the ones that we lost on the way
‘Cause the drinks bring back all the memories (aye)
And the memories bring back, memories bring back you
Doo doo, doo doo, doo doo
Doo doo, doo doo, doo doo, doo doo
Doo doo, doo doo, doo doo doo
Memories bring back, memories bring back you
Doo doo, doo doo doo doo
Doo doo, doo doo, doo doo, doo doo
Doo doo, doo doo, doo doo doo (ooh, yeah)
Memories bring back, memories bring back you
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, no, no
Memories bring back, memories bring back you
And with that, I’d like to share a quote, the final lines of Squirrelflight’s Hope :
“‘Look.’ [Bramblestar] looked up. ‘Is that a new star?’ [Squirrelflight] followed his gaze into the star-specked sky. A bright star glinted among the others. Her heart quickened. ‘Do you think it’s her?’ ‘Leafpool?’ ‘Yes.’ ‘I don’t know, but I know she’s watching over you.” … “She’s watching over the whole Clan.’ A lump pressed in Squirrelflight’s throat. ‘She always will.'”
Again with the memory thing.
Thanks so much for reading my article! I would recommend listening to the song afterwards, to get the feel for it and see how much it compares/doesn’t compare. Comment your opinions below! Briar out!
