[Firestar's family tree up until Omen of the Stars]

Examining the Clans’ Genetics in Warrior Cats by Lilykit

Lilykit breaks down cat genetics and applies them to ThunderClan!

Warriors genetics doesn’t make sense, and because of that I shall fix a decently big family tree, and that is Robinwing’s family tree because why not.
Note: I am not very good at genetics and I might get the whole carrying system wrong, and also most of the genetics stuff is actually done by a cat genetics calculator.

So, let’s begin with Robinwing and her mate, Fuzzypelt. Robinwing is a *presumably* long-furred cinnamon she-cat with splashes of ginger. Fuzzypelt is a *presumably* long-furred black tom. So, toms can be long-furred black while she-cats can be long-furred black with splashes of ginger. Their tomkits are Chestnutkit, Ravenpaw, and Dustpelt, while their she-kits are Frostfur, Brindleface, and Cherrypaw. All of them carry the gene for a cinnamon pelt.

Afterwards, we have Brindleface having kits with Redtail, creating Sandstorm. If Adderfang is technically a short-furred spotted brown tabby, then so is Redtail, so Sandstorm shall be a short-furred black she-cat with splashes of ginger.

Frostfur has kits with Lionheart, who is a short-furred blue (dilute black) mackerel tabby tom if I got it correct. Brackenfur and Thornclaw can be short-furred black mackerel tabbies while Brightheart and Cinderpelt can be short-furred black mackerel tabbies with splashes of ginger.

Brindleface has kits again, but with Whitestorm, who is a short-furred black and white tom if I got it correct. Ashfur can be a short-furred black (like his soul) tom, while Ferncloud can be a short-furred black she-cat with splashes of ginger.

Oh no, Dustpelt has kits with his niece, Ferncloud. Spiderleg, Shrewpaw, Birchfall, and Foxleap can be short-furred black toms, while Hollykit, Larchkit, and Icecloud can be short-furred black she-cats with splashes of ginger.

Brightheart has kits with Cloudtail, who is a short-furred dominant white tom (because Princess is genetically a short-furred tortoiseshell she-cat, so he can’t be long-furred). Whitewing, Dewnose, and Snowbush can all be dominant white mackerel tabbies carrying non-white, while Ambermoon can be a black mackerel tabby she-cat with splashes of ginger.

Sandstorm has kits with Firestar, who is a short-furred black tom. Squirrelflight and Leafpool can both be short-furred black she-cats with splashes of ginger.

Brackenfur has kits with Sorreltail, who is a white she-cat with black spotted tabby patches (if I got it correct). Cinderheart and Honeyfern can be black mackerel tabby and white she-cats, Lilyheart can be a black mackerel tabby with white splotches, and Poppyfrost, Molepaw, and Seedpaw can be black spotted tabby and white cats.

Leafpool has kits with Crowfeather, who is a short-furred black tom, so Jayfeather and Lionblaze can be short-furred black spotted tabby toms and Hollyleaf can be a short-furred black spotted tabby she-cat with ginger splashes.

Spiderleg has kits with Daisy, who is a long-furred cream (dilute red) she-cat. Rosepetal can be a tortoiseshell, and Toadstep can be red.

Oh no, Whitewing has kits with Birchfall and they are related. Dovewing and Ivypool can be short-furred dominant white carrying non-white.

Poppyfrost has kits with Berrynose, who is a cream and white tom. Cherryfall can be a tortoiseshell spotted tabby. Molewhisker can be a short-furred black spotted tabby and white tom.

Cinderheart and Lionblaze had both ignored that they are both related and had kits. Hollytuft, Sorrelstripe, Flywhisker, and Snaptooth can be short-furred black mackerel tabbies, Spotfur can be a short-furred black spotted tabby, while Fernsong can be a black mackerel tabby and white tom.

Squirrelflight finally has kits of her own with Brambleclaw, who is a short-furred mackerel black tabby tom. Alderheart can a short-furred black mackerel tabby tom while Sparkpelt looks the same but is a she-cat and ginger splashes.

Lilyheart and Snowbush are also related but they still had kits. Leafshade and Larksong can be black mackerel tabbies, while Honeyfur can be a dominant white she-cat, carrying white spotting.

Thornclaw has kits with Blossomfall, who is a silver and black mackerel tabby. Stemleaf, Eaglewing, Plumstone, and Shellfur can all be silver and black mackerel tabbies.

Dovewing has kits with Tigerheart, who is a short-furred black mackerel tabby and related to her. Shadowsight, Pouncestep, and Lightleap can be black mackerel tabbies.

Ivypool and Fernsong, third cousins, have kits. Bristlefrost can be dominant white, while Thriftear and Flipclaw can be black spotted tabbies.

Ok, so I think that’s it; however, there’s SOMETHING ELSE THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE NOW: Ships!!
First up, we have Cinder x Fire and Spotted x Fire. Firestar is a short-furred black tom, Cinderpelt with a short-furred black mackerel tabby, and Spottedleaf is a chocolate spotted tabby.

For Cinder x Fire, kittens will be short-furred. Toms can be black, and she-cats can be black with ginger splashes. Kits will be mackerel tabby or classic tabby. For Spotted x Fire, kittens will be short-furred. Toms and she-cats can both be black. Kits will be spotted tabby, mackerel tabby, or classic tabby.

Next up, we have Squirrel x Ash! Squirrelflight is a short-furred black spotted tabby with ginger splashes, and Ashfur is a short-furred black tom. Kittens will be short-furred. Toms and she-cats can both be black, but she-cats will have ginger splashes. Kits will be spotted tabby, mackerel tabby, or classic tabby.

Next, we have Sand x Dust! Sandstorm is a short-furred black spotted tabby with ginger splashes, and Dustpelt is a long-furred black tom. Kittens will be short-furred. Toms and she-cats can both be black, but she-cats will have ginger splashes.

Next, we have Berry x Honey! Berrynose is a cream and white tom. Honeyfern is a black mackerel tabby with ginger splashes. Kittens will be short-furred. Toms can be black, and she-cats can be black tortie. Kittens will be mackerel tabby or classic tabby.

Next, we have Dove x Bumble and Ivy x Hawk! Dovewing is a short-furred dom white she-cat carrying non-white. Bumblestripe is a silver and black mackerel tabby tom. Kittens will be short-furred. Toms and she-cats can both be dom white or black. Kittens will be mackerel or classic tabby. Kittens will be silver or smoke. Ivypool is a dom white she-cat carrying non-white. Hawkfrost is a chocolate mackerel tabby. Kittens will be short-furred. Toms and she-cats can both be black or dom white. Kittens will be mackerel or classic tabby.

Ok, let’s get onto the Lost Stars ships now.
First, Bristle x Stem! Bristlefrost is a short-furred dom white she-cat carrying non-white (black). Stemleaf is a short-furred silver and black mackerel tabby. Kittens will be short-furred. Toms and she-cats can both be black. Kittens will be mackerel tabby or classic tabby. All kittens will be silver or smoke.

Next, Stem x Spot! Stemleaf is a short-furred silver and black mackerel tabby. Spotfur is a short-furred black spotted tabby. Kittens will be short-furred. Toms and she-cats can both be black. Kittens will be mackerel tabby, spotted, or classic tabby. All kittens will be silver or smoke.

So, I guess that’s actually it. (And if you want to submit a family tree for me to edit, don’t make it ThunderClan.) Thanks for reading!

  • This was really interesting! I especially loved “… Ashfur can be a short- furred black (like his soul.)”

Ashfur’s soul is DEFINITELY black. Great article!

  • Great article, but I think you shoulder consider more possibilities that they carry certain genes, mainly in cats with unknown parents. For example, Fuzzypelt could be a chocolate carrier, dilute carrier, and a white spotting carrier; Robinwing could also be a white spotting carrier. The most impossible thing about their kits, thus, is that Dustpelt and Brindleface should be solids (though Robinwing could be a tabby) and Cherrypaw should be a tortie.

Lionheart is possible as he is since even though Speckletail would be a tortie, all toms get their color from mom. If he and Frostfur had kits, Brackenfur and Thornclaw would be gingers like in the books, but Cinderpelt would have to be a tortie. Even if Frostfur his a tortie coat, Cinderpelt could only be one, as she could only be ginger or a tortie. However, if Frostfur was a tortie and Lionheart had white spotting, Brightheart is possible.

If Brindleface was a tabby (which we’ll now assume that Robinwing was one), Her second litter would be possible, as her kits can only be grey. Sandstorm, however, would most likely be a dilute tortie. Even if Redtail was carrying black, our Sandstorm isn’t possible.

Most of Duspelt’s kids are possible, but the one that isn’t is Foxleap, as he’s ginger. Icecloud is possible because both parents could be white spotting carriers. The rest of his kids are either black (I know Spiderleg’s pelt isn’t possible, but they’re cats. He’s probably black)
or brown. About half of them are tabbies, which is possible considering that both the parents could be tabby solid carriers.

Also as a bonus, an easy way to make Daisy’s family more possible is by making her a tortie. Mousewhisker can now be blue, and Toadstep can now be black. Berry’s kits are very probable, as Cherryfall can stay ginger and Molewhisker can be Brown (Poppyfrost is a chocolate tortie despite what you think, they never mention what color of tort)

    • I just assume that they have no parents and they somehow appear out of nowhere.
      So yeah.

    • um….here is the explanation.
Whitestorm’s parents are Snowfur and Thistleclaw.
Snowfur’s parents are Moonflower and Stormtail. Thistleclaw’s parents are Poppydawn and Windflight.
Moonflower’s parents are Daisytoe and Rooktail.

Daisytoe is a solid gray she-cat that is 50-100% white, while Rooktail is a solid black tom with no white.
Dilute is recessive (meaning there needs to be two copies for this to work), and if you have one cat that is 50-100% white, their offspring will have 0-50% white. So Moonflower and Goosefeather are both genetically black and white.

Moonflower is genetically comfirmed to be black and white (carrying dilute), and Stormtail is gray. Since Moonflower is carrying dilute and Stormtail is dilute, Bluestar and Snowfur can have up to 0-50% white spotting or none at all. And they will be gray. So Bluestar can be solid gray with no white and Snowfur can be solid gray with 0-50% white to keep the “snow” part in her name.
Poppydawn is a long-furred ginger she-cat with no white. Windflight is a gray mackerel tabby with no white. Ginger she-cats are dominant, so their toms will be complete red while their she-kits will be tortie. So Thistleclaw is ginger mackerel tabby.
Snowfur is now gray and white and Thistleclaw is ginger tabby. Tabby is dominant, and dilute is recessive, so their toms will be black with 0-50% white spotting or none at all. She-cats can be tortoiseshell with 0-50% white or none at all. Kits cannot be dilute, so they will be carrying it. So Whitestorm is black and white. Yeah.

And I just learned that recessive genes are apparently carried for an eternity so genetically some these short-furred black kittens can be long-furred cinnamon.

  • Honestly, does anyone else care that Firestar, Squirrelflight and Leafpool are NOT BLACK?!?! Otherwise, great article! I didn’t know that Dustpelt and Ravenpaw were brothers!
