[Mapleshade and her hallucinations of Larchkit, Petalkit, and Patchkit]

Yes, it WAS Mapleshade’s Fault that her Kits Drowned by HollyleafTheGreat

HollyleafTheGreat takes a look at Mapleshade’s involvement in the death of her kits.

Art by GrayPillow

People empathize with Mapleshade and defend her with the fact that her kits drowned. And not only will I explain that it the death of her kits was her fault, but I will also explain how she did not need to avenge her kits.
Let’s start off by setting the scence (MAJOR spoilers for Mapleshade’s Vengeance): Mapleshade, a ThunderClan cat, is secretly mates with Appledusk, a RiverClan cat. She is pregnant with his kits, and when she gives birth, Frecklewish assumes they’re her brother, Birchface’s, because no living cat claims them and Birchface has died at the paws of Appledusk. Mapleshade doesn’t say anything, and everyone assumes she doesn’t like talking about her dead mate, and that they are Birchface’s. Ravenwing finds out, and tells everyone, and both Oakstar and Frecklewish are understandably upset when they learn that Oakstar’s son and Frecklewish’s brother is not the father, but rather the cat who killed him, which Mapleshade defends by saying it was an accident he died, and tries to say that it doesn’t matter who the father is. She pretends that she’s done nothing wrong, and might have had a chance to stay if she at least pretended she was remorseful, and if it were a recent enough battle, she could have said that she mated with Appledusk in secret, and when he’d killed Birchface, she’d seen his true colors. She could have acted sorry. Once exiled, Mapleshade crosses the stepping stones when the river’s going to flood. I don’t remember if it was raining, or if it were flooding season for the river, but many people say Oakstar would have known, and to that I say so would Mapleshade. There is no reason he’d know and she wouldn’t, but she didn’t care. Second, the stepping stones are not the safest way to cross, and the map shows two perfectly good bridges that she could have used to cross. And that’s no mistake, as she uses a wooden bridge to cross into Fourtrees, and could have used that bridge, noticed the mini-tsunami, and waited for it to pass. But instead she chose to be lazy and take the fastest and most dangerous way, even if there was no flood. Stormkit was about their age when he broke his jaw trying to cross the stones. So when Appledusk tells her he blames her for the death of the kits, he’s right. It was entirely, 100% her fault. And we know that, after their death, Mapleshade was haunted by their cries and kills three people to free them. It seems weird for StarClan to send her to the Dark Forest if she was trying to save her kits, but I don’t think StarClan knew about her visions, nor do I think that she had to free her kits. I think that she was haunted by her grief, and the death of her kits, and when she thought that she had to avenge them, the idea manifested inside her grieving brain. Because she didn’t blame one cat entirely, her mind created the visions to be one kit less with each kill. Her sanity dropped low and StarClan didn’t know (Yes, I believe in the StarClan is Idiots Theory) because they don’t know everything. But I don’t think Mapleshade deserved StarClan. She awoke in the Dark Forest and she felt pleased. Ready to build her army. Not wishing she were in StarClan. My next post will be about 5 cats that people think deserve the Dark Forest but don’t (and one that absolutely does)

  • Wow this was posted so recently..
I haven’t read Mapleshade’s Vengeance so I skipped over this but I noticed it was posted 48 minutes ago so… *clicky click noises*

  • Nice article! I was one of those people who sympathized with Mapleshade after reading Mapleshade’s Vengeance. This article made me rethink things though I’m not sure where I stand.

    • Well, you probably made up your mind by now, but I think it’s a huge compliment to see how one article can get readers thinking, and I’m glad! It’s also nice to see people with an open mind, who will receive new information about something and not block it out because it doesn’t fit with their stance. Also, sorry for the late reply I just revisit my articles and end up replying to comments from moons ago.

  • Mapleshade also had endless warnings, showing how dangerous the flood was at the time:

When Mapleshade took her kits to play at the river during calm conditions, Patchkit still almost drowned, needing to rest on a branch and becoming stranded in the middle of the river. Mapleshade doesn’t want to get wet to save her own kit, so wants her other two to risk their safety as well: “Larchkit, Petalkit, go help your brother!”

Mapleshade then gets two clear warnings from Riverclan cats:

Appledusk – “I think this one’s worn out from all that swimming, You took a risk, bringing them this close to our boundary. I don’t want to see you or these kits anywhere near the river again,”

Milkfur – “Those kits are not old enough to be out of the nursery! What were you thinking of, bringing them here? They could have drowned!”

Then during the actual flood itself, Petalkit pointed out it was too dangerous:  “ “There’s too much water!”. If a kit could see the danger, Mapleshade, as a grown warrior, has no exuse. .There are other, more simple ways she could’ve of gone about this: The bridge, like you said . Then calling for a Riverclan patrol first or sheltering out the storm somewhere.

In general, Mapleshade proves herself to be selfishly careless when it comes to her kits’ safety. Like the earlier example, casually taking them out of camp to a dangerous Clan border, when that’s against the Code.

Mapleshade gave everyone unrealistic expectations by thinking they’d accept what she’d done without issue. She planned to tell the truth herself when they were apprentices – She assumed they were so special compared to other youth, her clanmates would atomically love and accept them regardless.

Mapleshade expected the kits themselves could somehow unit two waring Clans and have perfectly even loyalties: “They will grow up to be fine warriors, loyal to ThunderClan and RiverClan equally.”.It just not fair to put all her fanatics and pressures onto them.

She also has no consideration for the long-term damage her Birchface lie could have on the kits. For most of their childhoods, they’d be raised to think their father is a dead, but admirable Thunderclan warrior. But then Mapleshade planned to tell them when they’re apprentices or older: Their father is actually the Riverclan cat they who killed their presumed father.

By the way Mapleshade ideally speaks about her plans; she expects her kits to support her actions wholeheartedly and has no consideration for any issues they may have. It could give her kits emotional damage – Leafpool’s kits and Bluestar’s kits reaction are proof of that.

  • In the end, Mapleshade is shown to be possessive of both her mate and kits. She projects onto them, her unrealistic fantasies and doesn’t consider they may disagree with it.

The moment she announces her pregnancy, she starts detailing how they’ll be raised and has her idealistic visions of the future, before even asking for Appledusk’s input. All the while, expecting everyone to be on her side and support what she’d done:

    “Mapleshade: I’m expecting your kits.
Appledusk: “Are you sure? I’m going to be a father. Incredible. But these kits will be half-Clan. Half RiverClan. How will your Clanmates feel about that?”
Mapleshade: “They won’t know. At least, not at first. I will raise them as ThunderClan until they have been fully accepted. Then every cat will be able to cope with the truth. Why should it matter that their father lives in a different Clan?”
Appledusk:“You have great faith in your Clanmates,”
Mapleshade:“No, I have faith in StarClan, and in the warrior code.”
Appledusk: “You think StarClan approves of what we are doing?”
Mapleshade: “I think our warrior ancestors know that our Clans need kits and we are providing them. How can our innocent kits not have their blessing? They will grow up to be fine warriors, loyal to ThunderClan and RiverClan equally.”

With Appledusk specially, Mapleshade used her kits like a status symbol, to gain ownership of him:

    • Literally in Chapter 1, before Reedshine and Appledusk were even together – All she did was approach her clanmate at the Gathering and get him to listen to someone’s funny story. Mapleshade overreacts to this one gesture” Mapleshade curled her lip. Stay away from him, Reedshine. He’s mine! These kits will make sure of that!”
    • Her goal was to ‘average her kits’, however Appledusk actually tried saving the kits in the flood. She uses her kits as an excuse to kill him out of her personal vendetta. To the point, she has to make stuff up: Mapleshade: You killed our kits, and now you must pay.” – Appledusk: “What are you talking about? You killed our kits, making them cross The river.
    • Then when Mapleshade goes for the kill, it against a pregnant Reedshine: You and your kits must die! Appledusk is mine!”
    • Haha late reply go brr! I think you might like the collab video Bright Guardian Akira and Moonkitti did on Akira’s channel about Mapleshade, as they both bring up a lot of these points as well as more! Also, I’m glad you expanded upon the article, bringing up some things I failed to mention. Great points, on both your above comments!

  • No,i completely disagree
‘she might’ve had a chance if she acted remorseful’ No. She DIDN’T. The thing that irked Thunderclan and that made the decision that she and her kits were exiled was that she had kits with a RIVERCLAN cat,who they were war in the time. Even if she acted remorseful, they already had much anger at her, because everybody believed Birchface was their father. And DON’T talk that Appledusk was let in because he was ‘remorseful'(or should i say pretending to be remorseful),because every clan is different.
Also,Oakstar just IGNORED one of the MOST IMPORTANT WARRIOR CODE,saying kits had to be saved, whatever clan they were. But no. He actually did the OPPOSITE of it.
And its true Mapleshade had no choice, not that ‘she did not care’.
The two wooden bridge? Yes,i checked all that up. As Mapleshade somehow gets to the river, there is no way she could have gotten up the bridge. First of all,it seems that the thunderclan cats chased out Mapleshade and the kits in the south way,and that’s how they got ended up towards the river. But the wooden bridge is in the NORTH way. And the second wooden bridge? I’m sorry, but that’s not how Thunderclan cats go to fourtrees, its how Riverclan cats go to fourtrees. She could not even reach THAT bridge.
Also, they could not go to Twolegplace because there are more percentage of dying then its in the rushing river. The river is one threat- in twolegplace, there are- mean twolegs, dogs, fierce kittypets, monsters, etc. And they cannot wait for a patrol to cross by,because Thunderclan might spy and,the way Thunderclan chased them out on a storm, they clearly don’t care about the life of a queen and kits,so they would have killed them if they were spotted. Which was proven true-Frecklewish was watching them on,and she DIDN’T save the kits when she was watching them.
    So no,it’s not her fault.

Yes,it WAS an illusion. But how was Mapleshade supposed to know that! I’m not saying she hasn’t done wrong or she isn’t evil- She IS evil, and she HAS done wrong. I know it does not make a wrong right. But A Mother’s love is fiercer then anything, and she was desperate to free her kits from such a thing. She ended up evil, but i still love her. I sympathize and understand her and her motives of becoming evil, and she is easily my favourite villian of all times.I love Mapleshade.

    • Actually, Oakstar did NOT break the “all kits must be saved” rule because the kits were not in danger. Also, if she could not have gotten to either bridge because of distance, that is the most pathetic excuse to sympathize with a murderer that I have ever heard. It’s not like she had a limit of how far she could walk, or an amount of time she had to leave the territory that would have forced her to walk across the stepping stones. I’m not saying that she would have most definitely got to stay in ThunderClan had she been remorseful, as there was emotional attachment to Birchface and Appledusk, but it certainly wasn’t helping that she defended having kits with Appledusk, like they should all be happy about it. So I don’t mind Mapleshade as a villain, but part of being a villain means that it was her fault that the bad things happened to her, and that her murders were as unjust as any.

  • OKAY I HAVE STRONG OPINIONS ABOUT THIS 😛

Oakstar KNEW what he was doing when he banished Mapleshade’s kits. He was ATTACKING kittypets in their own gardens, so he knew she couldn’t go there. He KNEW the tide was high and that she wouldn’t be able to carry three kits over the river. HE WAS SENDING THREE INNOCENT KITS TO THEIR DEATHS, AND HE WAS VERY AWARE OF IT.

Sorry for that rant. I hate Oakstar.

    • Oakstar had no reason to assume she would use the stepping stones. She could have used either bridge. Or gone to the barn where she meets her friend. He was not aware that Mapleshade’s lack of observance would get them killed. If he knew about the tide, so should she. One of her kits even remarked “there’s too much water” so she should have seen it.

    • What about Fourtrees? The Barn? Highstones? Anywhere rogues live? She had a lot of places to go, and a safe way to get across the river. Two safe ways to get across the river. She just didn’t use them for whatever reason.

  • I do not think it was Mapleshade’s fault. I respect your opinion, but I strongly disagree.
For starters, people always say that if she had taken her kits across one at a time, they wouldn’t have died.
But that would mean crossing the river six times.
At that point, Mapleshade would drown, and her kits would be helpless on their own.
I think she was doing the right thing.
Turtle Tail will always be the queen to me. <3

    • That’s what makes Mapleshade work as a villain- it’s her fault, and she caused a tragedy that hurt her badly. Instead of accepting that she acted wrongly, she blames others and becomes evil. The problem I find is when people think tragic = innocent.

  • never read mapleshade’s vengance but is petalsuffix (i dont know her suffix sorry) the one that goes on the quest, is she named after petalkit? Also great article!

  • i disagree
first of all mapleshade had to get out of thunderclan before oakstar might have sent other patrols and there might have been twolegs on the bridge and she was just thrown out of her clan. how would you feel if that happen to you?
