Was Dovewing’s Silence a waste? by Rockpelt

Rockpelt shares their opinion on Dovewing’s Silence.

Hi! This is Rockpelt here to ponder with you about a subject that has been nagging at the back of my mind. Was Dovewing’s silence a waste of a novella?

*Warning spoilers for Omen of the Stars, Dovewings silence and very minor spoilers for Squirrelflight’s hope (I would hardly call them spoilers)*

Now before I start I am writing this article assuming the Erins won’t write another novella/super edition for Dovewing. I usually read a novella and think wow! That was really unique and totally not a waste! Usually. I had second thoughts on Dovewing’s silence. First of all I like to think of Dovewing’s silence as an expansion for The Last Hope, but thinking about it why Dovewing? It didn’t play much with the DoveXBumble / DoveXTiger thing. In fact Dovewing’s silence could have been in almost ANY character in Thunderclan’s perspective! It still would have kept many of the major plot points! If the Erins had big plans for Lionblaze or Jayfeather then use Ivypool! Use Cinderheart for all I care! Dovewing’s silence didn’t play on Dovewings personality much. I especially felt this way during Squirrelflight’s Hope when Dovewing confessed she saw a different side of Thunderclan now that she lived in Shadowclan. Come on Erins! I want to see inside Dovewings head now that she is living in Shadowclan!
How does she feel about Thunderclan? Would she fight them if it came to a battle? Does she ever miss Ivypool? Does she ever fight with Tigerheartstar? How does she feel about Bramblestar? What about her old mentor Lionblaze, or Jayfeather? Does she still feel a connection to them? There are so many unanswered questions wasted so that we could hear her rant about her hearing.
I feel as if Dovewing’s silence would have been just have (if not more) interesting if it would have been with Lionblaze or Jayfeather.
In conclusion yes.Ido feel that Dovewing’s silence was a waste. Erins PLEASE make a new novella or super edition about Dovewing maybe even a manga! (Though I would much prefer a novella to a manga) that is all I have to say thanks for reading!

  • halfpaw who finally drew her profile pic and is the fluffiest chimera cat who used to be cinnamonpaw who likes indie pop (you can call me pumpkin/cinnamon/halfpaw/ or halfheart) says:

    ooh, nice article! 😛

  • There are so many novels/super edition after the last hope like Crowfeathers trial , Bramblestar’s storm and Dovewings Silence. To be honest Dovewings Silence wasn’t very good

  • I haven’t read the book yet, and I didn’t want to anyways, because I knew the whole book was about Dovewing complaining and whinging about literallyfor no reason. And that would make me hate Dovewing more than I already hate her.
And now that I read this article, I really don’t want to read it. I mean, no offense, I LOVE the novellas, but Dovewing’s one of my least fav characters, and her novellas sound pretty uninteresting and boring. I mean, instead of Dovewing, they could have written about some more interesting charcters like Jayfeather or Ivypool. There was legit nothing to write about her. We already knew she was “depressed” about losing her powers and whinging about her perfect life.
(No offense to the Erins, I know they put a lot of effort in the books, but not everyone has to like it)

    • How was her life perfect? Her sister hated her for half her life, and annoying tom kept pestering her about being mates and tried to force her to have kits. She lost the powers she had for all of her life and had literally had just gotten used to. And then people will say Lionblaxe and Jayfeather didn’t complain! But how would we know that? For all, we know they did complain. If I recall correctly Jayfeather and Lionblaze weren’t exactly to happy about losing their powers either. Then in the AVOS her sister hated her for falling in love. I am sorry if I offended anyone.

  • I do NOT think Dovewing’s Silence was a waste. Be warned, my Dovewing defending mode is kicking in.
People say she complains in it. But really, who can blame her?

She literally just lost powers she had her own life.
Obviously that’s a lot to handle!
People also argue, “Oh, Jayfeather and Lionblaze didn’t complain about losing their powers!”

But how do we know? The novella focused on Dovewing, not Lionblaze and Jayfeather!
Also, Dovewing is younger than them! She might find change harder to deal with.
That was the end of me defending Dovewing.
    Bye.
    I love Hawkfrost

      • 😛 I really get passionate about defending Dovewing, don’t I? 😛
        I love Hawkfrost

    • But she was still a grown adult, just like Jayfeather and Lionblaze.
I doesn’t matter if she was younger, because she wasn’t a child and an adult just like both.
And even if they were upset, Jayfeather and Lionblaze weren’t so dramatic and obvious as Dovewing. She was literally complaining in front of people.
And plus, Jayfeather and his siblings received the Prochecy when they were apprentices too, and they weren’t devastated like Dovewing was. At least she had their support and knowledge to help her out. They started with nothing!
(Wow, I never thought I’d be defending Lionblaze)
And there were so many cats who lost everything and never complained.
I mean, it might have been alright if she was just upset, but she’s just too over the top.
She was acting like a literal elder and doing nothing! She was like a burden to the Clan.
And the cave echoey thingy was just ridiculous.
She should have sucked it up and gone on. It wasn’t the end of the world. She didn’t go blind, lose her hearing, lose her leg, or tail or anything. She was just like any other cat!
Honestly, I feel really bad for Ivypool. She had the worst sister ever.
I mean, I’ve never seen a good excuse from people defending Dovewing for how she treated Ivypool.
Because she treated Ivypool like a peice of garbage and there’s no excuse whatsoever for how she treated Ivypool.

      • Ivypool treated Dovewing worse than she treated her. Dovewing was never mean to Ivypool. And she wasn’t doing nothing, it was her own free time. She didn’t stop providing for her Clan. You can’t blame her, image having the greatest eyesight then going blind, that’s how Dovewing felt. Are we even reading the same books? Because I know for a fact Dovewing didn’t do anything to Ivypool! Besides, Jayfeather Lionblaze and Hollyleaf might not have been devastated because, one, they had each other, and two, people react differently! You can’t except two different cats to act the same way. It seems people are making up things to say about Dovewing.

(Sorry if I’m being to snappy.)

      • Jayfeather and Lionblaze DID whine about losing their powers like when LIonblaze stepped on a thorn. This was also demonstrated in Bramblestars Storm and you are mixing it up IVYPOOL treated Dovewing like a piece of garbage because she was jealous of her, and you may be like she snapped at her and said that she was a better warrior than Ivypool but it’s obvious that none of you thought of WHY she said WHAT she said. Yes, that’s right it was because of Ivypool. Dovewing was kind to her sister but Ivypool got blinded by her own jealousy. Now you may say Ivypool spied on the Dark Forest. Welp one she was forced to and two she didn’t tell anything HELPFUL till the Forgotten Warrior when she FINALLY started acting like a good spy. That’s the end of my Dovewing protection rant. 🙂

  • I haven’t read Dovewing’s Silence but I really want to. I think that would be interesting if they had made the book about her in the timeline where she joined ShadowClan

    • I think it’s because she’s seen as a bit of a Mary Sue character, and shows little redemption in all of the arcs that she has been in. But that’s just my opinion.

  • I would like to add that the novella is worth reading it just seems like it wasn’t the ideal time for a Dovewing article to be made.

  • Yes! that book could have been used for a better topic. Dovewing and her little mate drama got way too much attention. In Omen Of The Stars, Dovewing’s Silence, Tigerstar’s Shadow, and tidbits from other series.
