Mapleshade and the Five Stages of Grief by Ravenflight

Ravenflight analyzes Mapleshade’s actions.

I am not going to deny that Mapleshade is a villian. And one of the best villians in Warriors series, actually. She is the mastermind behind many schemes, including the battle with the Dark Forest cats, ruining Crookedstar’s life, helping Tigerstar, training Goosefeather, and many, many more.

You may have noticed, however, that she did all of these things from the Dark Forest, after her death. Now, you might have a differing opinion, but I think Mapleshade only became evil AFTER death.

You’re probabaly screaming in your head, “But Ravenflight, did you forget that she KILLED THREE INNOCENT CATS???” To that I say, think about it. She was a grieving mother, she had been banished from the only home she’d ever known, AND she had been hearing whispers of her dead kits telling her to avenge then. Also, even though she ouwardly denies it, I think in the back of her mind, she did think it was her fault that her kits died.

Which brings me to my point.
Ok, before I present you with my theory, you’re going to have to learn about the five stages of grief. The five stages of grief are the basic emotions someone goes through while dealing with loss. Of course, this is not true for everyone. People go through lots of different emotions when experiencing grief, and it’s not the same for everyone. These are just the basic five emotions, and the common order people experience them in.
They are, in order:
Denial – Denying your loss, telling yourself it’s not true.
Anger – Lashing out at people, blaming people, generally being mad.
Bargaining – Trying to trade your loss with something else, or trying to tell yourself you have something else, so it will be okay.
Depression – Being sad, giving up, acting like everything is terrible.
Acceptance – Finally accepting that’s what’s gone is gone, and moving on with your life.
(A helpful way to rememeber these is to remember the acronym DABDA.)
Anyways, back to Mapleshade. I think she went through denial pretty quickly, but then ran into some problems. She got stuck somewhere between anger and bargaining. (I guess you could argue she might’ve only gotten stuck on bargaining, but I think she was pretty angry.)
Instead of healthily moving through the stages, she got bitter, and started to bargain for her kits’ lives by killing of the cats she blamed. I think, if she hadn’t been killed when she had been, she would’ve moved through the other stages, and finally gotten to acceptance. The message I’m really trying to communicate here is that Mapleshade’s actions were justified. I’m NOT saying it’s okay to kill people when you’re sad, but I’m saying she had her reasons. I’m saying she wasn’t evil. When she died, though, she wasn’t given the chance to move through the stages. The cats in the Dark Forest were waiting, ready to make her bitterness and anger fester and grow, causing her to turn into the villian we know today. If they had let her go to StarClan, then she would’ve been able to reach acceptance, and forgiven herself and others for her kits’ death.

    Oooo! Nice article!

  • Yes you’re very correct
This would be why I hate MV
    Nice article 🙂
But she grew bitter as she killed, and she was happy and joyful to go to the Dark Forest.

  • Wow. This is amazing. I never thought about it this way, but you are so right! You softly explain why you think Mapleshade is a great villain, but you also explain why you sympathize with her. You gently approach the point of your article, and the readers cannot look away from this wonderful piece of art. (Reading this for the third time….)
You approached a perspective no one has ever seen, and you made it so beautiful it should get published in a warriors book! AND IT IS SO VERY TRUE!!!
I am spellbound. This is just wonderful. 😀

  • Ok good article but… mapleshade has no place in starclan. she killed cats with no hesitation because she drowned her kits…? I

    • Mapleshade did NOT drown her kits. She was’t Riverclan she didn’t know it was going to flood and of u blame anyone blame oak star ( i think that was ThunderClans leader at the time)
For exiling three two moon old kits out there

        • she tried to carry them across and she could’t stay in thunderclan territory could she? Mapleshade and her kits would have been treated like rouges so she tried to get to her mate and her kits where half riverclan and they could swim pretty well all ready so she DID NOT kill her kits

    • have u read MV? (mapleshade’s vengance) because if u haven’t, then u need to read it before this article makes sense

      • well not on purpose.
she tried to take them to riverclan but they drowned by accident.
• Yea well I’m not sure if dragging your kits across a storming, raging river at night counts as… not drowning them… also yeah, I’ve read the book. 40 times. In rage

          • What she did was not good. And I understand you. But…
First, it felt like StarClan had turned against her. They sent the omen to Ravenwing, and they knew that Ravenwing was going to tell Oakstar, who would kick three kits and Mapleshade out of the clan. Think about it, you have three really young kits, and suddenly the leader you trust and follow kicks you out just because the cat you love “supposedly” kills his son. He was not able to see that Mapleshade loved Appledusk before he “supposedly” kills his son. So, basically, she kicks out kits and a loyal warrior because of his own personal problems. Mapleshade never openly said that Birchface was there father. Frecklewish just assumed that. Were would you go? To the only cat you trust, who you love, who will always give their support. There was no other way to RiverClan’s home. She thought her kits would always be safe in their father’s clan. That was the only safe place she could go, to give her kits the best future. She tried to save them. But she failed. Mapleshade was already blinded by anger when she got kicked out of ThunderClan. She might have not seen the danger of the river when her vision was obscured by her problems.
I hope this helped to see why people like Mapleshade. But if not, that’s your opinion! 😀 I’d love to hear your view on Mapleshade! 😀

    • it’s totally not Maple’s fault for that. There were no obvious choice. the border only occupies the river, and twolegplace. Twolegplace has monsters, twolegs, dogs, rough kittypets, rouges, loners, dangerous twolegstuff and wandering animals that’s harmful for cats(badgers, foxs, etc.) and the only choice is the river. the kits were too cold and miserable, and if they were there until the storm stopped, they would’ve be dead. It’s not her fault.

        • Please look at the map. Thunderclan has to cross riverclan,or at least one of the clans to go to the barn. But Riverclan can just go straight away. Mapleshade and the kits were at Thunderclan territory when they were turned away, but when Mapleshade was turned away she was at Riverclan territory. And that leads to the barn.

  • Awesome article! I feel like if Mapleshade lived, Myler could have helped her become a good cat.

  • I always feel sorry for Mapleshade. I mean, they didn’t let her in after her kits died. Appledusk started blaming the poor, saddened soul. I mean, stop blaming her, you don’t know what she’s going through, Appledusk! Most of us hate Appledusk. Maple X Apple =Betrayal. But some, just don’t like her. That’s okay, we have different opinions. This was an amazing acrticle.

  • when i saw this i was excited, and i had a reason to be. this was a topic ive never seen before! it was amazing! quick suggestion, anyone wanna write a defending reedshien article or something? or like both sides of the reedshine article. 🙂 i still cant get over thsi article, i ned to read it again.
