Are you sitting down?
I am about to announce a couple of changes to BlogClan that may alarm you.
Before I do, I’d like to thank you all for contributing so much and beautifully and with such charm and humour and whimsy to BlogClan. I love your comments and games and ideas, and I worry about your worries and rejoice in your successes. I don’t want any of that to change.
We are seeing an increasing amount of comments daily and there are times when we are swamped. I am very lucky to have a hardworking and talented BlogTeam, who give their time for free to keep BlogClan rolling happily along, but even they are occasionally overwhelmed.
But I am determined to:
- keep BlogClan ad-free. This means there is a limit to the amount of time and resources I can make available to keep it running.
- ensure every comment is moderated before it is shared to ensure BlogClan remains the happy and safe place it has become.
And so, in order to streamline and hopefully speed up the moderation process, I have put a limit on the length of comments allowed (2000 characters or about 400 words)**.
Take a breath.
And from now on, fan fiction will no longer be approved.***
Yes. I really wrote that.
FAN FICTION WILL NO LONGER BE APPROVED.***
This means, comments containing fan fiction will never make it out of moderation. They will languish there, unread and unmoderated, for eternity.
Short Story Contest submissions, however, will be approved as long as they are labeled as “Short Story Contest Entry” AND meet the criteria of being 2000 characters or less.
IKR?
Harsh.
I want to encourage you to keep writing, because you are so talented, but please, please publish your writing on another site from now on.
Wattpad* looks like a useful site for sharing fan fiction and I believe that it is far better suited to publishing and sharing your work.
Feel free to post links to your fan fiction on the fan fiction page (please don’t post them anywhere else on BlogClan – links to fan fiction from any other page will be deleted).
OK. Important message over. You have been very brave and patient.
I hope you are not too shocked or distressed. I promise, once you get used to the new way of doing things, it will seem perfectly okay. But while you adjust to the changes, please feel free to have a cup of tea, rant (politely) in a comment, or simply listen to some cheerful music.
*Disclaimer: BlogClan has no control whatsoever over what appears on Wattpad or other sites. If you intend to use the Wattpad site in particular, we encourage you to turn off mature content in the Content Preferences. BlogClan is not in any way responsible for content you read or post on other websites.
**The 2000 character limit policy will be reviewed in a few weeks…it may be a terrible idea. We can only find out by trying. Feedback is always welcome.
*** The fan fiction policy will never be reviewed. It is final. 💀
Ms. Kate (or just Kate idk :P), what about Trailing Stars?
Trailing Stars is something that BlogTeam is involved in and oversees, so Trailing Stars is the exception. Also, Trailing Stars isn’t posted on the fanfiction page anyway, so it doesn’t really count within the changes included in this update.
Do roleplays count as fanfiction?
nope! y’all can still roleplay to your heart’s content as long as your comments are less than 400 words, which is our new limit 🙂
Thank goodness 😛
What’s going to happen to the existing fanfiction?
Fanfiction that has already been modded on the fanfiction page will remain up.
Stunning news, but I understand how overwhelming it is for mods
Could I ask a few questions? You don’t have to answer!
1. There will be no more short story contests either, right?
2. So you are saying no more fan fictions; but you can post links of Wattpad with your fan fictions here? Don’t the moderators have to read the short story anyways? To be approved?
3. I’m not allowed to use Wattpad, or any other site. I am only allowed to use one, and that one is BlogClan. Plus, I really don’t like that Wattpad is one of those sites that you have to sign in before reading anything, and sometimes people use bad words there. So..I can’t write any more fan fictions that I can share, right? Sorry, for asking this. The answer is obviously no! 😛
Thank you, I’m sorry for asking all these questions! 😛 I completely understand why, and I’m glad the moderators won’t have so much work!
(The cheerful music is great! 😊)
Oh, can I post short chapters on the fan fiction page? Like under 400 words? 😀
No, we’re not going to be modding any fanfiction posted on the blog. The only exceptions are if things are for a contest (you have to write that it’s for a short story contest and it must be under 2000 characters) or if you’re posting a link to a fanfiction, which will only be approved if it’s posted on the fanfiction page.
1. If you can write entries that fit under the 2000 character limit (including “Short story contest entry” at the beginning to signal to moderators that it’s for a contest), then they can still be run. You just have to jump through extra hoops.
2. No. We moderators are officially brushing our hands clean of having to read any BlogClanner-written fanfiction. Any link that’s posted on the fanfiction page will not be read through by moderators, hence our disclaimer of “BlogClan/BlogTeam is not responsible for anything you see outside of the blog through the fanfiction page”. Any fanfiction that is posted directly on the blog, unless signalled to moderators saying that it’s an entry for a contest and fits the 2000 limit, will be trashed immediately.
3. We will allow Google Docs links on the fanfiction site, as well as any other writing site links to be posted on the fanfiction page. As stated before, we will not be vetting anything for bad or mature content, so it is not on us if readers see less-than-pleasant content on whatever they read from the links posted. We will only take down links if it’s requested by a number of BlogClanners. The BlogClan wiki is also a site we’re allowing to be posted.
Sorry to keep on bothering you, but if we post the google docs link, won’t people be able to see our personal information?
Yes, if you decide to use your personal account, that is! Several BlogClanners, myself included, have made BlogClan-themed Google accounts that don’t contain our personal information. That being said, if you do see that someone posted something with persona information on the fanfiction page, please contact them privately if you can (like through Discord or some other private messaging software) about it. Don’t bring it up publicly on the blog, because then that could prompt other people to start snooping as well!
While this is sad news, I completely understand. I can’t imagine how hard it must have been to mod so many fanfics!
I hope I can read the rest of your fan fictions! <3 They always brightened my day!
And I'm curious what will happen next with Lionscar, Dawnlight, their kits and PineClan! 😀
I understand. I have NO idea what it must be like to be swarmed like comments. It’s like being popular, but worse. 😛
(also how do I put to notify if someone reply’s so my comment?)
We had to turn that feature off.
It’s a bit sad to not be able to post fanfiction on the blog, but I understand why you made the decision. Mods have a lot of comments to moderate, and fics tend to be long and hard to get through quickly. Thanks for letting us know, and thank you so much for running BlogClan at all. <3
I understand. Thank you for taking so much time and effort to keep Blogclan ad-free/safe.
I agree, this makes a lot sense. I know what it’s like to have a ton of work to do for a while when you don’t really want to do it but you have to do it—to be able to achieve something, make someone else happy, etc. Ah, wait but I haven’t experienced the loads of work everyday with other things going on. . . . I can’t imagine what it would be like o^o’” Anyways, I understand(and most others too)! I hope you all will have a great week—and hopefully(paws crossed) that everything will end up okay and you won’t have to do so much tiring work—caus’ we dun wan dat
this totally makes sense! i’m sure the mods will be happy to not have to put up with my 5,000 word fanfic chapters or my 1,400 word rants arguing over pokemon characters 😂
question – are links to archive of our own (another fanfic site) allowed? and i’m going to assume not – but if i were to include a warning, would it be okay if the fic that the link was to contained swearing of any sort? in the past, i’ve censored all my writing to be posted here, but since i can’t do that anymore and i know some people here might still want to read it, i was just wondering if i would be able to still share the link or not. if not, i totally understand! 😄
Go wild
I have a suggestion, you could get a new member for the blog team in charge of the fanfic page. that could help maybe.
BlogClan was never meant to be a platform where you could post fanfiction, like Wattpad or Quotev or AO3. And trust me, speaking from experience, dedicating entire days to just reading fanfiction on the blog is incredibly draining and I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. It can very quickly turn a volunteer job into a chore, and that’s something that would really suck.
oh I understand
I think I agree with Ember – that’s a lot of work to give to a single person, and I’m not sure how comfortable we’d be with essentially giving someone an unpaid proof-reading job. Never say never, but I think it would be safe to read this as close to never as it could be.
yeah that makes sense I understand
Hopefully this means I’ll be able to find other chapters of interesting fanfics faster, since they’ll all be in the same place. I bet Scratch would also be a good alternative for posting fanfics!
