Chickens experience gratitude.

My hen Dasha was always a sweetie, but she used to be quite shy and prefer to keep a distance most of the time.
A while ago, she suffered a beak injury, which caused her to be unable to eat or drink.
She needed a lot of care during that time, and we took her into the house to treat her. My mom made jello and wet food for her to eat, and gave her water through a syringe until she healed.
After she recovered she was so much more social and super affectionate. She now lets us pick her up really easily and often comes to snuggle.
She’s grateful that we took care of her, and she’s trying to show it.

Chicken combs are like fingerprints- no two are identical. It’s a great way to tell similar looking chickens apart, and I have a theory that chickens themselves use combs as a method of telling flockmates apart.

I didn’t actually hear of this anywhere- but I’ve learned it from my own experiences. A farm I volunteered at had many chickens that looked alike, but I could tell all of them apart by their combs.
