Pinestripe I am so sorry about Pepe. She seemed like such a great hen! Again, I am so incredibly sorry about your chicken
Thank you so much. <333
I am so so sorry about Pepe, Pinestripe. I understand your pain, my chicken died a couple years ago as well. I’m sure she was a joy to take care of and will not be forgotten. May I ask if you have a square-shaped picture of Pepe? And if it’s fine if I use it? Thank you.
Thank you so much. And I’m sorry for your loss. <3 It's never easy.
Of course! Here you go: https://i.imgur.com/lOh5Ua4.jpg
I’ve never owned chickens, but I know the pain of losing an animal. My beautiful, gentle, sweet dog Abby passed away a few months ago. She was 13 yrs. old! May she rest in heaven…
Hugs to you, Pinestripe. I’m sure Pepe was a wonderful friend.
Thank you. <3 <3
Aww, Abby sounds like an awesome dog! <3 I'm really sorry to her about her passing. 🙁
I'm sure she's happy in Heaven thinking about all the wonderful memories you gave her. <3

Can I join this?
Of course! 😀 Everyone’s welcome here and I love having people to talk with! 🙂
I just wanted to ask you something about my chicken Poppy but first let me give you a little information about the situation: He’s an outdoor chicken, it’s cold where we’re located and I guess technically he’s my grandparents so he doesn’t live with us.
So, we washed Poppy’s feet so it hopefully doesn’t get infected, but we’re worried about him getting sick because it’s so cold. I’m also worried because when we picked him up to wash his feet he had clear liquid coming from his mouth (looked like he was drooling). I’m hoping it’s just some water that was in us crop but if it is more serious I don’t know what we should do or if we should be doing something about it now. We don’t have the money for a vet. Do you have any advice?
Here are some of my thoughts. 🙂
For keeping him safe in the cold:
-Check that the coop has no drafts. Chickens are usually okay in the winter as long as they don’t get a cold draft. With that said, ventilation is still important- just make sure the wind doesn’t blow in at the chickens.
-Keeping them dry is super important. Feathers protect chickens from the cold quite well but not if they’re wet so make sure the coop is dry and not leaking.
If he’s in a solid coop with dry bedding and no drafts then he should do okay. 🙂
(I’ll be addressing the liquid from his beak in my next comment)
About the liquid:
Sometimes when a chicken recently drank a lot of water a bit might come out if the crop is touched/squeezed. However, it’s very often a sign of a problem that shouldn’t be ignored.
-Keep an eye on this to see if it keeps happening.
One of the issues that the liquid from his mouth could point to is sour crop. Sour crop is a yeast infection in the crop (the organ on the chicken’s chest where digests food).
-Chickens’ crops should be full after they eat but they should wake up with a flat crop as they haven’t had breakfast yet.
Gently feel his crop in the morning when he first wakes up- if it’s still full despite him not having eaten yet and feels boggy or squishy it’s likely sour crop.
Chickens with sour crop also often have bad smelling breath.
Keep an eye on him to see if he’s still going to the bathroom- knowing if he’s able to pass food is super important.
If you suspect sour crop, a few things you can do for him are a crop massage (very gentle rubbing from top of his chest to bottom). Probiotics are also helpful to help correct the bacterial imbalance- most feed stores have special chicken probiotic powder so you may have that on hand, or otherwise feeding him some plain probiotic yoghurt could do the trick.
I hope this helps a bit. Poppy’s lucky to have a caring owner like you. <3
I'll be praying he feels better soon! God knows best how to care for him after all, no matter how much medical experience we may have, so I'm trusting that Poppy is in His safe hands. 🙂 <3
Okay, thank you. One more question: Could he be doing this due to pain or stress?
Thanks so much again, Pinestripe.
I’d definitely keep an eye out for signs of stress, but I don’t think this is one of them considering that because chickens can’t throw up, any liquid that flows from the mouth is “overflow” from the crop and is thus unlikely to happen due to problems other than crop issues.
Chickens tend to hide their pain.
It can be a bit tricky because of this, but there are some signs of pain or stress we can look out for.
Some signs of pain/stress include:
-Sitting in a hunched up position with the feathers puffed out (although this could also just be the cold weather, as chickens puff up their feathers to trap the warm air underneath)
-Weight loss.
-Avoiding interactions with the flock.
-Disinterest in eating (this could also point to a crop issue, but can be pain related).
-A dull or withered comb.
Well he is doing some of this, but that’s also because of his foot. He stays up on the roost lots of the time but he’s been going down more lately. He seems to be doing a bit better so hopefully he heals up soon.
That makes sense, and I do think it’s because his foot is aching. But at least you’re keeping it clean, and he’ll hopefully feel better really soon. 🙂
*Hugs to Poppy*
Thank you for your help, Pinestripe. 🙂
Any time! <3
Hi Pinestripe!
I’m so sorry about your chicken Pepe. I understand your pain too. I have 40 pet finches (yep its a lot), and I’ve recently lost a bird for reasons I still don’t know of. He was an adorable blue Gouldian finch named Ocean and he was so cheerful and happy.. I still miss him, and I’m so sorry about your chicken Pepe. I understand how sad you must feel… Remember that BlogClan is always here for you Pinestripe if you need us! <3
Thank you so much, and I’m really sorry about Ocean, too. <3
I’m sorry about Pepe, Pinestripe. I never knew her (duh) but she must’ve been amazing. Trust me, I know how it feels to love someone so precious. May Pepe find a place in Chicken-StarClan 🐓
Thank you <333
Hey, Pinestripe. I just have an unimportant chicken question to ask you: Why would a hen want to fly over to a different coop?
We have two coops and after one of our hen’s chick died and our hen wasn’t busy taking care of her chick, our hen was constantly flying over into our other coop. we kept putting her back but eventually just left her alone and now she’s living in the other coop. I don’t really need to know but I was curious to know why if u have any ideas about this.
I remember there used to be a hen like that at a farm I visit- she’d fly over to the goat pen every day! 😛 Her name was Flappy Sue.
Chickens have a mind of their own! 😂
Sometimes they just decide to move like that. Flock relationships are driving factors in chicken behavior, so it could be because she didn’t get along with her old coop-mates, or simply felt more drawn to the chickens in the other coop. Or maybe she liked the coop itself better than her own, since different chickens have different preferences of what kind of home is a comfortable place to live.
Okay, thanks!
Flappy Sue is a cute name!
