Hi! I have two chickens who i absolutely love! The orange-ish yellow-ish chicken is Pip and she is really fluffy. So fluffy that she looks fat even though she’s not! My other chicken is black with white flecks. (i don’t know how to describe her colors) and her name is Baby. Baby is actually older!!! 😂 They both are really fluffy so they both actually look fat.

One of my hens ClauRica looks kinda like that- she’s completely round because of all her floofy feathers and it makes her look so huge! 😂
Pinestripe, I need your help! One of my roosters, Rusty has an eye injury and I don’t know what to do! He got in a fight recently so I asked that’s what happened to his eye. It’s all dark excpet there is some pink…I don’t know how to describe it. Do you have any ideas?
My chicken Kurochka Ryaba suffered an extremely similar injury.
Not the clearest picture, but this is her shortly after the injury: https://i.imgur.com/67zorrb.jpg The eye was of red, and later became kind of dark with brown and black. Now that it’s healed up some of her regular amber eye-color is visible again, and a sort of swirly black line.
The most important thing at this point is to avoid infection. Putting saline drops (just regular- not medicated) in the eye once or twice a day should help keep it clean until it heals.
In some cases -like Kurochka Ryaba- the eye may go blind and look a little odd. But with care they can still live a happy life, so I really hope that whatever happens -whether the eye completely heals or not- Rusty will be okay.
I’ll keep him in my prayers. <3

Luckily there are lots of different ways to help- and even if you can't adopt a chicken you can still make a difference! 😀
First off, showing your parents some videos of rescued chickens might get them interested in the goal. Here are a few I love:

Next, here are some ways you could go about helping chickens:
-Sponsor a chicken from an animal refuge or sanctuary. The money you send will help care for him or her, and in a lot of cases you receive a photo of your chicken.
-Donate to a trustworthy rescue, to help them save more chickens.
-Inform people of the fact that most egg brands treat their hens really badly. If asked what to buy instead, you can direct them to Vital Farms- they take really good care of their chickens.
-Sign petitions against caged eggs, or against animal abuse in general.
-Many people don't know what special and emotional beings chickens are, so even just sharing cute chicken videos or fun facts with those around you can make a difference.

Last week I went to France to visit my family and I got to meet my grandparents’ gardener’s chickens!! (My grandparents have a massive garden and so the gardener helps them take care of it) They were so cute, I got to hold one and I never thought chicken feathers were so soft.
Also I noticed that when they were eating their grain, the dish was hard and making the grain bounce so they couldn’t pick it up with their beaks very well and I picked some up in my hand and held it out to the smallest hen. Then all the other chickens came over and started pecking my hand for grain too and I could barely get it into my hand fast enough.
I have a new found respect for chickens now! 🙂

Pinestripe, I’m so sorry I’m bugging you so much, but one of my hens has this small swollen patch above her eye. She doesn’t have any problems seeing and she’s acting normal and nothing is oozing so I don’t know what’s wrong with her or what I should do…Do you have any advice?
Don’t worry, you’re not bugging me at all- I love being able to help out in any way I can! 🙂
Usually I’d say it might be a respiratory sickness (the sinuses cause their eyes to swell when they have that), but since you say something is oozing it’s likely something else.
If you suspect it could be a respiratory problem there’s an herbal remedy for chickens called VetRx, which is harmless to give just in case. It can go over her beak near the nostrils, under her wings, around her face, or in the beak and will help treat/prevent sickness.
I’m suspecting it could be that she has an eye injury, such as a peck or maybe a bug bite.
Putting sterile, non-medicated drops in that eye could be a good idea in any case.
Definitely keep an eye on her and see how she behaves and if there’s any changes, since there might be more clues later on as to what happened.

But yeah, that’s a really good sign since no oozing means it’s probably not respiratory. 🙂
I haven’t been able to get her any medication yet, but so far she still is acting normal and everything. The swelling looks like it has gone down a bit so I’m wondering if I still need to get her something or if it’ll just pass.
I’m so happy it appears she’s getting better and not worse! I think at this point you can just keep an eye on it and wait for it to hopefully pass on its own. 🙂

Cherry got sick and became really weak. We took care of her and tried to make her better but she just didn't have enough energy to pull through and eventually passed away in our arms. 🙁
She's comfortable in Heaven now.. I think it was just her time, so God lifted her out of her pain. <3
