Is Bramblestar . . . abusive to Squirrelflight? by Mistshade

Mistshade shares their opinion of Bramblestar and Squirrelflight’s relationship.

Okay, okay, you clicked it. This is a serious topic that I have been thinking about for the past few days. After re-reading a few books and whatnot, your friend Mistshade will(hopefully) work out this.

Okay, so. We all know Bramblestar as the warrior that Firestar appointed as deputy late after Graystripe disappeared. We know that he became leader in the end of ‘The Last Hope’ the last book in ‘Omen of the Stars’, the last book that I have read so far. Fine, that last sentance wasn’t true, I just wanted to say ‘last’ again. Anyway, I did re-read it recently.

So, I’m gonna give your five reasons why people may think that Bramblestar is abusive to Squirrelflight. Then, I’m going to try to back up Bramblestar. {Keep in mind, however, that SquirrelxBramble is my favorite warriors ship}

1. Bramblestar always has to be right. So, yeah. As we have seen throughout the story is that when Bramblestar says something, it’s like, word. He’s very dogmatic about the things that he does. Thus, when it comes to trying to agrue with him, you won’t get out of the conversation feeling too good. And thus, Squirrelflight gets a lot of that.

2. Bramblestar doesn’t listen to her much. So there has been times that, Squirrelflight, as deputy, have been rejected of her reasonings and forced to do what Bramblestar wants to do. For example, in ‘Brambleclaw’s Storm’, Squirrelflight didn’t have much word in when Bramblestar decided to help Tawnypelt. This and a lot of others situations happened to her.

3. Bramblestar takes no notice of some of her feelings. Sometimes, Bramblestar won’t even see her, completly ignore what is going on in her head, and just focus on himself and the Clan. It’s difficult to be mates with the SON of Tigerstar. And even though Squirrelflight is stubborn, Bramblestar is strong and overpowering.

4. Bramblestar decides when Squirrelflight is forgiven. So, as you may or may not have seen, Squirrelflight forgives Bramblestar pretty quickly when he goes off with Hawkfrost(The guy who almost killed her beloved father) and trains in the Dark Forest. BTW, I am reffering to the last book in ‘The New Prophecy’. And then, when Squirrelflight is literally just trying to keep her sister from being a scorn(Influenced by YellowFang herself) in front of all the Clans, Bramblestar COMPLETELY ingnores her for SIX BOOKS! {We see the Mistshade in her natural habitat, raging about something she cannot stand about Bramblestar}

5. Bramblestar is over-all just forceful. You can tell that he gets his way in a lot of things. No questions asked. In ‘Squirrelflight’s Hope’, her honor as deputy is almost completely ignored. I mean, she’s not a ‘paw anymore. Bramblestar is in fact leader, but his deputy is very important, especially his mate.

    Unfortunately I think your article was cut off :c
    But yes, Bramblestar is definitely abusive to Squirrelflight, especially in Squirrelflight’s Hope. In that book, he treats her horribly, never respects her opinion on literally anything, threatens to take away her position as deputy just because she disagrees with him, makes Squirrelflight feel self-conscious and upset… and that’s just a few things!

    I used to ship SquirrelBramble, but now? Now I hate Bramblestar, and would never ship Squirrelflight with such a terrible mate!

    What’d I Miss

  • Bramblestar is not the best mate, but I also think Squirrelflight is at fault. She didn’t tell him about Leafpool’s kits, she was off and on again with Ashfur, she also didn’t respect him as a leader to be honest (making destions behind his back, even when he was leader). I know a lot of people will complain about the last one, so let me explain. Deputies do not usally question their leader. The only other one I can remember is Firestar and Bluestar, only because Bluestar was basically going crazy.

  • Yeah, if bramblestar isn’t dead by the end of TBC then they should part ways. They clearly aren’t healthy for each other.

        • A couple will fight. I think, deep down, Bramblestar is a good cat and cares for Squirrelflight more than anything else. Fighting is normal for a couple, because it shows they care about each other and listen to each other. Maybe the listening bit wan’t true for a little while, but Bramblestar and Squirrelflight made up in the end.

  • YES!

    I’ve always disliked Bramblestar—well, ever since Squirrelflight and him started fighting. He is a horrible mate, really annoys me. He’s got forgiveness issues and I get the feeling he’s got an arrogant sense of authority over her, for lack of a better word. He belittles her a lot throughout the series. I never understood why she married him. I’m glad to see an article on it. 😀

    (Note: other views respected! You’re entitled to your opinion :3 )

  • I liked Bramblestar a lot when he was a warrior, not so much when he became leader. I especially hated the book about him because his character was so annoying in it. But every couple has its problems weather its shown in every ship or not, and Bramblestar was never cruel toward her at all. Sure, sometimes he didn’t respect her opinion – but I hardly think that’s any reason to call him abusive! They might not have been the most perfect couple, but Bramblestar was not in any way hurting her and I don’t think it’s fair for him to get this much hate.
    But that’s just my opinion anyway, nice article 😊

  • Ok Squirrelflight deserved better k. Shrewpaw and her would’ve been a better relationship but of course Shrewpaw had to die.

  • This was good… but you never actually backed up Bramblestar like you said at the beginning of the article? At the point where I’m at I still like him and it makes me sad to hear his character deteriorates so much… I’ve heard enough about how horrible he is in Squirrelfight’s hope to read this without major spoilers and maybe when he is deposessed he will be nice again. (Or if that already happened, maybe he’ll start being nice.)

  • You know what I feel about them? I kinda half-like, half-hate Bramble. Same for Squilf. Hmm… I’m not sure I think the BramblexSquilf ship is unfitting, but neither am I sure is fitting. Maybe, maybe, just somewhere in between…

  • Bramblestar had a right to be upset about the Three. His own children weren’t his children! And Squirrelflight didn’t trust him enough to tell him the truth!
    He isn’t abusive, I don’t think. It’s just that both of them are so stubborn.
    I think that Squirrelflight’s and Bramblestar’s biggest issue is communication. Half of the conflict-three-quarters of the conflict-between them in Squirrelflight’s Hope could have been avoided if they had actually sat down and talked about things. But they didn’t.

      • Well he didn’t listen to her reasoning, and he was rude and overpowering. She only lied for her sister and wouldn’t have lied if there was another solution. Yeah that doesn’t mean she’s right but that doesn’t mean that he isn’t abusive. There are many forms of abuse, and he is verbally and mentally abusive. He is always right, and he punishes Squirrelflight for things he has done. Whenever Firestar asked him to help put after graystripe went missing he made Squirrelflight do the dirty apprentice work even after she became a warrior. And he tried to dominate her because he was meeting with a physic murderer Hawkfrost and she didn’t want him too. Being Bramblestar he automatically thought it was because he was the so of Tigerstar. And even after he helped another cat try to KILL their own leader, it wasn’t Hawkfrosts fault. He was just trying to do the right thing according to Bramblestar and it was Squirrelflight who was wrong. So yay punish Squirrelflight for u being an idiot.
