Comparing Ashfur to Judge Claude Frollo by Brillig

Brillig draws parallels between Warriors and the Hunchback of Notre Dame

This theory will be comparing one of Warriors’ most controversial characters, Ashfur of ThunderClan, to one of Disney’s darkest villains, Judge Claude Frollo in The Hunchback of Notre-Dame.

Ashfur is the son of Brindleface and brother of Ferncloud; he wanted to be Squirrelflight’s mate and was genuinely hurt and angry when she rejected him; in revenge, he attempted to kill her father and adopted kits before being killed by Hollyleaf; much later, he came back from StarClan and possessed Bramblestar’s body.

Claude Frollo is a ruthless Parisian justice minister, adoptive father of Quasimodo, and murderer of many innocent people.

The two of them share a surprising amount of similarities.

  • Both of them like to be in control.

When Ashfur possessed Bramblestar’s body, he was very strict about the warrior code, interpreting it to his own ends, and enforcing strict punishments on anyone who disobeyed him.

Frollo wanted everyone in Paris to obey him-Quasimodo was terrified at the thought of disobeying him-to the point where he burned down the houses of several people whom he only suspected of having gone against his orders.

  • Each one genuinely believes he is in the right and everyone else is in the wrong, when in actually he is more wrong than the rest of them.

Ashfur went to extremes about obeying the warrior code in The Broken Code, but I’m pretty sure that trying to kill your Clan leader, three more of your Clanmates, including a blind medicine cat, possessing a Clan leader’s body-or anyone’s body-and instigating a battle for your own purposes is also against the warrior code?

Frollo is all about “justice” and “respect.” Meanwhile he is allowing Quasimodo to be humiliated in front of a crowd and killing and arresting random people with no proof of wrongdoing at all.

  • Both are obsessed with a woman who wants nothing to do with him, and both go to extremes when rejected.

When Squirrelflight rejected Ashfur, he conspired with Hawkfrost of RiverClan to kill his own Clan leader and seasons later, tried to kill Squirrelflight’s adopted kits, all so she would feel the same pain he did. Not to mention everything he’s done in the Broken Code arc.

As for Frollo, when Esmeralda refused him, he attempted to burn her alive. Which brings me to my final point:

  • Both have dramatic climaxes involving fire.

For Ashfur, of course, it was the pivotal fire scene. Atop a cliff, fire raging all around, the Three trapped between the flames on three sides and the abyss on the fourth, only for Squirrelflight to reveal that they were not her kits at all, which led Ashfur to decide on a different way to hurt Squirrelflight, by announcing the truth at a Gathering.

Frollo, as stated beforehand, tried to burn Esmeralda at the stake. Also, he died by falling into a pool of molten metal, which should count as fire-wasn’t he saying something about a “fiery pit”?

Ashfur and Frollo have more in common than I thought they would when I first thought of this.
