MapleSugar shares their opinion on Jessy.
I have read a lot of articles about Jessy. Some people liked her some absolutely detested her. After reading Bramblestar’s Storm, I will debunk some of the points others have made Again, I just wanted to share my opinion.
First I am going to start with the first reason everyone uses.
1. She. Is. Good. At. Everything.
She is a kittypet who shouldn’t know how to fight, hunt, and much other stuff this kind of annoys me. Jessy is still a cat though so she stills has these natural instincts they just shouldn’t be as good as you might say a feral cat. She never had to fight for what she wanted because it was handed to her. A lot of you in the comments will bring up Firestar but he still had to face being accepted in his clan. He went through a lot of hardships to be able to finally be respected in his clan he was the literal stepping stone for all the kittypets who wanted to join a clan. Jessy never had to face these kinds of things she was accepted almost immediately.
2 – “Jessy got in Squirrelflight and Bramblestar’s way! She almost broke them up!”
This is just not true at all. Many times in Bramblestar’s Storm did Bramblestar still maintain a good relationship with Squirrelflight. For instance “Watching Squirrelflight as she began efficiently rounding up their Clanmates, he added to himself, I’d be lost without her as my deputy.” – Chapter 14. Many times in the story did Bramblestar praises Squirrelflight and has flashbacks about her. I myself am not a big fan of the BramblexSquirrel ship. I do know that if they hadn’t gotten back together basically Skyclan coming back wouldn’t have happened, Darktail also wouldn’t have been defeated, but then again Darktail wouldn’t have even found the trail to the clans from Alderhearts scent.
Another thing that people bring up a lot is Jessy moving her nest into the leader’s den. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t annoyed by this action. Moving her nest into someone else’s den without permission could cause some unforeseen problems. Bramblestar didn’t really seem to care anyway not in a romantic way or an unhappy way.
It also seemed in the novel that Bramblestar and Squrrielflight were taking a break for the moment. Taking a break doesn’t mean seeing other people or in this case cats.
In the end, Jessy isn’t my favorite but I don’t hate her. She wasn’t given enough time to fully develop and grow as a person, she felt rushed and put together especially her backstory. Her being able to jump through trees like Skyclan felt like it could have been developed more and expanded on. Maybe she was a Skyclan descendent, if she had stayed then would she have gone on the journey with Alderheart? Would have the story turn out completely different? Who knows all we know is she left and we might never see her again much to BramblexSqurriel shippers relief.
That the end of my article makes sure to leave a comment saying your ideas and thoughts!
You made some good points! However, I like Jessy. Great article! 🙂
Thanks for taking the time to read my article!
Nice article!
great article! I agree! I’m re-reading Bramblestar’s storm and I’m neutral on jessy
I feel like the authors could have developed Jessy more. Make her interact with squirrelflight more, make her not be good at SOME things, gave her a better ending, etc.
Also bramble being instantly in love with jessy was weird and not thought out.
It never felt like the authors thought it out thoroughly. To me, it was like he was falling in love with the Squirrelflight like quality that Jessy had and not Jessy herself. Overcoming challenges would have been great to read and push me to want to watch her become successful. Instead we were given a character that was on the edge of becoming a mary sue.
Thanks for reading!
Haven’t read Bramblestars storm but I can see what you mean. Especially moving into the leaders den. That is very disrespectful. But anyway, Impressive article Maplesugar!
I personally really like Jessy! <3
Also, I don’t think she meant sleeping next to Bramblestar in a disrespectful way- I think she was trying to be kind.
And it was really selfless of her to leave ThunderClan so Bramblestar could be happy with Squirrelflight! <3
Overall, I think Jessy is a really cool character!
The World Was Wide Enough
Yup! ^^ Definitely agreed!
Especially the part about moving her nest- that’s honestly one of my favorite moments because of how sweet and concerned she was, and plus- she wasn’t even in Bramblestar’s den. If I remember correctly that was when the cats were sleeping in the tunnel.
I can definitely see your point here. It was unfair for the readers to hate her for falling in love with Bramblestar at the time while he and Squirrelflight were on some kind of break. Her leaving because she knew Bramblestar still had feelings for Squrrielflight was really kind and I liked that about her.
Throughout the book, Bramblestar also makes little comparisons about Jessy to Squirrelflight, this was evidence of his remaining feeling towards his (ex?)mate. Personally, if Jessy was given more character development and genuine interactions with characters(mostly Squirrelflight) I would have liked her a lot too!
Also thanks for reading!
I actually love Jessy. People just attack her too much in my opinion! 🐾
Same! <3
Jessy doesn’t deserve hate at all, you’re right! <3
The World Was Wide Enough
I love Jessy so much! <33 She's so awesome!
I think the reason she was accepted quicker than Firestar was most likely because she was just staying temporarily, rather than actually planning to join the Clan.
I feel like I'm the only one who loved it when she moved her nest to Bramblestar's? 😛 Idk. She just acted so concerned and caring and it honestly made her fly up my favorites list because of what a sweet friend she was. <3
She didn't move it into his den, though, as far as I remember- all the cats were staying in the tunnel and she just moved closer to comfort him.
I definitely agree with point 2! 😀 She never tried to get in the way of BrambleXSquirrel like people often accuse her of doing so I’m glad you pointed that out!
Overall this is an awesome article and I love that you wrote it from an unbiased perspective and addressed multiple points in the books! <3
Also, as a big fan of the SkyClan Jessy I never actually thought about her going with Alderheart but it makes so much sense and I think it's an awesome idea for an AU! 😀 Now I wish that had actually happened!
I like your reasoning!
