Spottedleaf vs Sandstorm: Who is better? by Mistystream

Mistystream compares Spottedleaf and Sandstorm

Okay, before the comparison, we will take a look at their stories. Before I go on, this is only the first series, and I will not be writing about anything after ‘The Prophecies Begin’ series

Sandstorm: Sandstorm starts off as Sandpaw. Like every other apprentice, Sandstorm wants to prove she can be a warrior. But when Fireheart joins, she and her brother hate him for being a kitty pet. Sandstorm bullies Fireheart throughout the first few books, and her hatred intensifies whenever Fireheart and Graystripe become warriors. Sandstorm had been an apprentice for much longer than Vireheart, and is extremely jealous and angry whoever he becomes a warrior and she doesn’t. But she starts to like him after he saves her from falling off a cliff during a skirmish with RiverClan. She eventually becomes friends with him, and after a while she starts falling in love with him. But she is furious with Fireheart whenever he becomes deputy and refuses to give her an apprentice in an attempt to protect her. After a while Fireheart apologizes and their relationship is mended. In the end of the series they are extremely close, which leads to them becoming mates.

Spottedleaf: Spottedleaf is a medicine cat of ThunderClan. Medicine cats are forbidden from mating. Before Fireheart and Spottedleaf get to know each other well, Spottedleaf is murdered. But Spottedleaf starts visiting Fireheart in his dreams, and they fall in love. Whenever Fireheart becomes Firestar, Spottedleaf grants him a life of love.

Who is better (in my opinion)?
Sandstorm
Sandstorm just has so much more character growth, and she has more personality. She is sassy and stands up for herself, even with Fireheart. Spottedleaf is a bitnunlikeabke in my opinion. She can’t let Fireheart go, and continuously visits him in his dreams. She is quite bland, and I personally do not like SpottedleafxFireheart. Sandstorm has a lot more flaws than Spottedleaf, and I feel like that is what makes her much more relatable. Sandstorm has a personality a bit similar to mine so I really relate to her. But that is just me. So when it comes down to Sandstorm vs Spottedleaf, Sandstorm is a fiery young she cat that has character development, but Spottedleaf is a cat that can’t let go of Fireheart, and has little to no character development. She is very bland and a bit to perfect(I know she has flaws but she is still kinda flawless).

  • Great article, Mistystream! While your summaries of SpottedFire and SandFire were excellent, I strongly disagree with your conclusion. Your explanation on why you think SandFire is more of a rant on why you dislike Spottedleaf rather than her relationship with Firestar. Also, I’d prefer SpottedFire over SandFire, but we all have our own opinions. To add to this, what do you mean that Sandstorm has more character development than Spottedleaf? In my opinion, it’s the other way around. Sandstorm always kept her feisty, sassy, rude, sharp-tongued personality. She grew to feel affection for Fireheart, but her true characteristics and personality never changed. For example, her narrow-minded attitude and sharp tongue. Sandstorm was known for her barbed tongue, and she continued to break up with Fireheart for simply not giving her an apprentice. Fireheart still loved her, but she took this as a personal attack and began to avoid Firestar until he unnecessarily apologized to her. In the meantime, Spottedleaf had so much overlooked character development. She was shown as a fiery, sharp-tongued apprentice in Spottedleaf’s Heart, but grew to be a thoughtful and sympathetic medicine cat. She overwent development with Thistleclaw, where she learned to be more open-minded and sensible. She overwent development with StarClan and Featherwhisker, where she trained to become one of the best, most patient and gentle medicine cat with an unusually strong connection to StarClan. She overwent the stages of maturity, while Sandstorm was still guilt-tripping Firestar as an adult in Firestar’s Quest, saying that his visits with Spottedleaf — something that Firestar had no control over — as his own fault, and she even ran away, making Firestar once again unnecessarily guilty. ~ Cloudy

    • Whenever I had written this I had only read the prophecies begin. And in the prophecies begin Sandstorm has a lot more character development than Spottedleaf. But that’s just my opinion

  • Part 2 of My Comment | Spottedleaf also underwent even more development, when she fell in love with Firepaw and was forced to control her feelings rather than openly showing affection, since she was a medicine cat. Even in StarClan, Spottedleaf was again forced to watch her relationship with Firestar fail, as she would never be able to spend enough time with him in dreams, and as Sandstorm would make a much better mate than her. Even after watching Sandstorm literally guilt-trip Firestar in Firestar’s Quest, Spottedleaf was forced with the knowledge that Sandstorm would still make a better mate than her, and she was forced to give up her role as Firestar’s dream guide. How do you think Spottedleaf felt during all this time? Of course, to make such large sacrifices, she needed lots of courage, dedication, compassion and, of course, character development. Also, Spottedleaf can’t be perfect if she also was reluctant to let go of Firestar and she underwent little character development. To add to this, Spottedleaf does have flaws. First, she rejected StarClan’s will and became a warrior apprentice despite being destined to become a medicine cat. Then, she fell in love with Thistleclaw, who manipulated her and was clearly evil in the end. Then, she fell off a tree while training due to Thistleclaw’s harsh instructions. Then, she visited the Dark Forest, which is a flaw in itself. Then, she was extremely bossy and controlling of her littermates, and had to undergo character development to understand them. Then, she was reluctant to let go of Firestar, which was a flaw in itself as she shouldn’t have broken the warrior code and fallen in love with Firestar in the first place. Also, you can’t say that Spottedleaf is flawless but has flaws. Flawless means that they have absolutely no flaws, and therefore, you cannot use this word to describe a character who you already admit has flaws. ~ Cloudy

  • Part 3 of My Comment | So, to conclude, I believe that Spottedleaf has much more character growth, personality, and development than Sandstorm. Many of Sandstorm’s breakups with Firestar were actually due to Sandstorm’s lack of character development. Take not having an apprentice as an example. Why is Sandstorm so eager to receive an apprentice? Instead of politely or even thoroughly explaining this to Fireheart, she gets unreasonably upset and angry at him, pushing him away and refusing to talk to him rather than even giving him one sentence why. Then, she deflects the blame by saying that it was Fireheart’s fault that Sandstorm didn’t get an apprentice. However, she needs to keep in mind that Bluestar is still leader of ThunderClan, and she gets to decide who’s a mentor and who’s not. If Sandstorm isn’t a mentor, she should get over it or at least explain to Fireheart in a more thorough way. Besides, Fireheart already promised Sandstorm that she would mentor one of Willowpelt’s kits. That should be enough, but Sandstorm still got angry and broke up with Fireheart. This was an extremely narrow-minded decision, especially to the fact that Bluestar made the decision, not Fireheart himself. ~ Cloudy

  • Part 4 of My Comment | Several of the characteristics you used to describe Sandstorm that you claim to be lacked in Spottedleaf’s character are actually part of Spottedleaf’s personality. For example, Spottedleaf does have a very unique, well-developed personality, in my opinion. While she is generally portrayed as a generic character, she still has a personality. For example, Spottedleaf is gentle, yet harsh, demanding, impatient, frustrated, and upset several times in Into the Wild. When Tigerclaw tried to wake Ravenpaw up but re-open his wound in the process, Spottedleaf pushed his unusually long claw away, which is quite daring, especially for a medicine cat. Then, when Graypaw and Firepaw enter the den, Spottedleaf is shown to be impatient and frustrated at all the interruptions, and she even pushes between them to reach Ravenpaw. Later on, when Firepaw enters her den to fetch some poppy seeds for Graypaw, Spottedleaf is shown to be pacing around her den in an upset manner. Also, Spottedleaf’s words are shown to be either gentle or demanding, though there is always a warm or amused glimmer in her eyes, showing her true gentle, feisty, energetic, and dedicated personality. Spottedleaf is also compassionate, committed, and very helpful, shown when she shared her knowledge to Firepaw when he was fetching poppy seeds/mouse bile for Yellowfang, even politely and thoroughly explaining how to use the remedies. We learned lots from Spottedleaf’s dialogue and knowledge, for example; marigold to prevent infection, pressing wads of cobwebs to heal wounds, traveling herbs to bring down appetite and bring strength, mouse bile to push away ticks, and poppy seeds for pain. ~ Cloudy

  • Part 5 of My Comment | Spottedleaf, when visiting Fireheart in dreams… ah, this can take some time to conclude on. Alright, think about this in both perspectives. Perspective A = Spottedleaf is visiting Fireheart to spend more time with him. Perspective B = Spottedleaf is visiting Fireheart to deliver prophecies and guide him toward the path to defeat Tigerstar. so, during their visits, did Spottedleaf greet Fireheart warmly, shares tongues with him, comfort him, run around and play games? Or, did Spottedleaf briefly greet Fireheart, tell him ominous prophecies and omens, and disappear into the shadows? I would say yes to the second set of questions. Also, does that sound familiar? Hmm… so, Leafpool goes to StarClan, StarClan tells her about the “before all is peaceful” prophecy, and they disappear into the shadows. I feel as though Spottedleaf more or less visited Fireheart for the sake of guiding him on the right path, giving him brief and ominous comforts, and share prophecies with him, rather than visiting him for the sake of spending time with him. Also, their visits were short and simple, though ominous. It was more likely that Spottedleaf visited Fireheart to give him prophecies and share comforts rather than spend time with him and share tongues or even affection. Therefore, it’s easy to conclude that Spottedleaf wasn’t just zapping around his dreams. ~ Cloudy

  • Oh, Spottedleaf is that bad. Firestar loved her as a kit, and she followed him in his dreams. Creepy. And died. Creppy

  • I was warmed at Sandstorms grief for Firestar… I love Sandstorm!!
