Brightmoon states her opinions on Flamepaw.

*CAUTION! SPOILERS! This article includes spoilers for the newest warrior book “A Starless Clan 1# River.” Turn back now if you haven’t read it.*
Hi! It’s Brightmoon. This is my first article and I hope you like it and it goes well. Today I am going to discuss Flamepaw and why I do not like him.
The Flamepaw I am talking about is Sparkpelt and Larksong’s son, not Rowanclaw and Tawnypelt’s son. That Flametail fell through the ice RIP. So, in “A Starless Clan 1# River” Flamepaw is one of the main characters. He failed his warrior assessment two times before he became a warrior. The first one time he failed was basically his fault.
He was hunting in the forest and he knew that Lilyheart was watching him and guess what he did when he came across a decent mouse. HE REFUSED IT!!! He decided that a mouse wouldn’t be impressive enough and continued on his way. I mean what kind of mouse-brain would do that? Even if it was just a mouse it would have kept a starving apprentice alive a few more days.
He turned down three perfectly good pieces of prey and when he came across a fat juicy squirrel he finally decided to catch something. But OF COURSE he had to get it using the most impressive way possible and ended up with a mouthful of leaf litter and no squirrel. At the end he hadn’t caught anything to show for so he had to watch his littermate get her warrior name. The second time he was trying to get any prey he came across but couldn’t find any. Then he finally saw a thrush but a hawk was eyeing the small bird as well.
Since he was desperate and thought that Lilyheart (and Squirrelflight who was standing in for Bramblestar) would be impressed if he used his speed and skill to get to the thrush first. He decided to go for it. He successfully caught the thrush and the hawk did not come after him but Squirrelflight still FLAT OUT FAILED him! That time it was not his fault and I was mad at Squirrelflight for doing that. I felt bad for him.
He passed the next time and I was happy for him but what he did next made me SO ANGRY! He hadn’t had the best relationship with his mother and had never known his father. He was struggling under the weight of Firestar’s (Firestar is his Great Grandfather) legacy. He was mad about his name because it didn’t describe him or something. So when Bramblestar named him Flameheart, which was part of Firestar’s warrior name, he finally snapped and REFUSED HIS WARRIOR NAME!
I was so mad and so was Squirrelflight and Sparkpelt that he refused his name. Then Flamepaw/heart explained that he wanted his own name, not an echo of Firestar’s, something about how he didn’t look like his name. Then Bramblestar renamed him Nightheart. Who refuses their warrior name?! Young cats these days.
That is why Flamepaw/Nightheart is now on my least favorite characters list. I do feel a little sympathy towards him. I just don’t like his actions. I will NEVER get used to calling his Nightheart so I am sticking with Flamepaw. Many of you will most likely disagree with my opinions but anyway have a good day!
Great article!
I think that NIghtheart had a right to be upset, but carrying on every 5 minutes about how terrible his life is is extremely grating, especially right after we had an arc of Rootspring who’s basically the same character.
great article! I’m gonna have to politely disagree, nightheart is another angsty teenager I can relate to and a lot of his actions are kind of understandable. he just wants to impress everyone and be super surprising and heroic like his ancestor firestar, but the thing is, he’s not firestar, and by the end he’s tired of everyone acting like he is. I think it’s inspiring of him to stand up for himself at his warrior ceremony, and has a theme of “you don’t have to be who society wants you to be” or something like that I’m not that good with morals :PP amazing article nonetheless!
I agree completely! I think that Flamepaw/Nightheart’s entire character arc of river was extremely forced on the Erins part. For the first thing, there are many cats in the clan who are just as related or more related to Firestar than him (His foster mother included.) For another thing, they compare him to Firestar way more than is normal and the erins just throw in all those remarks about Firestar so they can have Flamepaw be depressed. And of course he’s mad at Sparkpelt for ‘abandoning’ him, when she literally got EXILED and he could have gone with her so really the only person he has to blame is himself. I also hate how he has no personality besides being depressed and anxious about literally everything. It gets old really fast. If you ask me, his warrior name should have been Flamesong in honor of Larksong, or if Flame is REALLY just TOO TERRIBLE of a PREFIX I guess Nightsong would do just as well.
I COMPLETELY AGREE!!! YAY SOMEONE ELSE WHO DOESN’T LIKE THE SPOLIED BRAT!! He’s just always mopping and sulking and thinking “Oh, poor me! I come from a successful family.” Even Alderheart, if I remember correctly, wasn’t struggling with the “weight of Firestar’s legacy.” I really don’t think that Nightheart deserves to be related to Firestar.
Sorry for ranting on.
He is not spoiled and not a brat, in my opinion. Just like Lilacpetal said, I’d be a little ticked off at being compared to a person I never knew before.
I don’t like him either, but I don’t think we can really say he’s spoiled… (He is a brat though) his dad died before he really ever knew him and his mom was distant for a while cause of that and then was even more absent because she was exiled… Which is tough but I wish he had some personality besides constantly complaining and being depressed about everything.
I disagree with you because he is not a brat Sparkpelt barley paid attention to him and he had every reason to change his name. Nightheart is not another Firestar and I respect your opinion but I like Nightheart. he had to live up to his kins expectations and felt pressure about that. In Sky every cat forced him to change his name only Sunbeam accepted his name. Just my opinion
Great article! I don’t love Nightheart either but i can understand where he’s coming from. I don’t know how I feel about any of thw protagonists rly cuz they’re all copies of TBC protagonists.
“Young cats these days…” Lol you sound like Mousefur 😂
Thanks!
good article
Great article, but I respectfully disagree! He wants to be a respected and skilled warrior, but he doesn’t want people to thing that just because he’s a relative of Firestar. If people frequently compared me to a person who I’d never met and attributed by success to a distant relative, I would be a little peeved as well. I can understand why some people would be annoyed with his POV though, since there isn’t much to his character besides this as of now and it’s something that can become a bit grating after a while!
I will defend Nightheart’s decision to reject the first name they tried to give him though. Nobody should be forced to have a name they don’t want or feel comfortable with, and he has every right to ask for a different one. Millie, Daisy, and Ravenpaw have all rejected recieveing warriors names since they feel most comfortable with their current names, so why shouldn’t Nightheart have the right to ask for a different one, one he’ll be more comfortable with?
I agree with Lilacpetal!
Good article, but I completely(and respectfully) disagree. He’s just a young apprentice who doesn’t know much better, and he has the giant weight of his famous ancestor on his shoulders. I mean, his warrior name that he almost got was so much like Firestar’s! He had a right to deny his warrior name and become his own cat, not what everyone else wanted him to be.
Just saying, if I was in Flamepaw’s position, I would totally try to impress my mentor on my warrior assessment, and deny a little mouse. He was trying to impress them because his great-grandfather was like, the most famous cat in all of Clan history.
Nice article! I agree 😀
I personally (and I respect your opinion.) disagree. I understand not going after something because it isn’t your cup of tea. I had many projects I hadn’t got into as it wasn’t my cup of tea. I relate to him not feeling good enough compared to his family. He said in the book itself that it isn’t only due to Firestar as he states numerous number of his family doing impress things like Squirrelflight, Bramblestar and Alderheart. Also disrespecting his name, Ravenpaw flat out refused a warrior name and Crowfeather asked to have his suffix be feather after Feathertail. Millie and Daisy chose to keep their names. Its his choice what name he wants and isn’t his fault not like Flame- also he let Bramblestar choose his suffix.
The reason I’m probably so defensive is I project myself on to him. I find him relatable and just like me. By your complaints you want him to be perfect and I beg your favourite pov in River was Frostpaw because she is generic and ‘perfect’
I can relate to Nightheart and he doesn’t want to be an echo of Firestar which I can understand.
I half agree and half disagree 😛
Great article! I’ve never read River, so I cant really judge Flamepaw or Nightheart or whatever people are calling him, but he sounds pretty annoying. But I’ll have to read the book before I decide🙂
Same :p
