So, pretty much everyone knows how Squirrelflight brought Lionkit, Hollykit, and Jaykit into the ThunderClan camp with Leafpool. But, when I look at the character designs and the relationships between the characters at the time of this event (specifically between Squirrelflight, Brambleclaw, and Ashfur), I noticed something that seemed a little off to me. When Squirrelflight brought the kits into camp, it’s assumed by the readers that the members of the Clan quickly assumed that they were Squirrelflight and Brambleclaw’s kits. I’d like to quickly point out that I have gone through all of my books and possible sources online, but I could not locate any actual evidence of the moments when the kits are first brought into camp. The closest I could find was in the last chapter of “Leafpool’s Wish”.
When Squirrelflight and the kits enter the camp one of the things Leafpool heard was, “Brambleclaw, look! You’re a father!” It’s unknown who said this. This shows that their clanmates almost immediately assumed that Brambleclaw was the father. I found this odd considering the only kit that looked even a little bit like either of them (Squirrelflight and Brambleclaw) was Lionkit. And the more I looked at their character designs, the more questions formed in my head.
Hollykit is described as a black she-kit with green eyes. Jaykit is described as a gray tabby tom with clear blue eyes. Lionkit is described as a golden tabby tom with amber eyes. Squirrelflight is a dark ginger she-cat with green eyes. Brambleclaw is a dark brown tabby tom with amber eyes.
The main question I asked myself was, “Why did no one suspect that someone else fathered the kits?” Nearly everyone in the Clan knew about how Squirrelflight would go between Brambleclaw and Ashfur. Whenever things were rough in one relationship, she would retreat by giving more attention to the other tom. Although, in chapter 1 of “Leafpool’s Wish”, it is noted that Leafpool believes Squirrelflight has made the decision to stay with Brambleclaw.
The main point I’m getting at here is that while Lionkit bore the most resemblance to Brambleclaw and Squirrelflight. Jaykit’s appearance and Hollykit’s personality more closely matched that of Ashfur. Why did none of the clanmates have even the smallest suspicion that Ashfur was the true father of “Squirrelflight’s” kits?
Did anyone else notice this?
