Palepaw takes a look at Ravenpaw and Barley.
So hiya guys! It’s Palepaw, and I know I haven’t written an article in a long time, so sorry bout that 😛 Today I would like to discuss Ravenpaw and Barley, as I’ve seen less and less people ship them due to their age gap.
First of all, they DO NOT have a HUGE age gap. This one is very debated on. Some people don’t ship them because they have more of a father son relationship, which I think is totally okay, but tbh the age gap would be (maybe) a little too small for that. Anyways, I’m going to start off at Bloodclan, where Barley and his siblings were born. The earliest that Barley could’ve been born was a little bit after Scourge met Bone and Brick. Presumably AT LEAST a couple of moons. Keep in mind that at the time Scourge found those two, he was kit aged, since he just escaped from his family and was called a kitten in pg. 38 of his manga. I suspect that he took a couple months before creating Bloodclan. I believe that he was around 12 moons (1yr) if not a little bit younger when he completely started Bloodclan. That leads me to the conclusion that this is the EARLIEST time Barley could’ve been born. Then again, I feel like it would be more realistic if he was born a bit after the founding. After Barley was a year old he moved out from Bloodclan and moved to the barn, where he was briefly mentioned in Yellowfang’s secret, described as a ‘Young cat who had just moved into the barn.’ At the end of Yellowfang’s secret, some say that it took place maybe 1yr before ‘Into the Wild’ BUT in Exile from Shadowclan, Yellowfang, Nightpelt and some other elders are shown to be plotting with Whitestorm although she hasn’t yet joined them. Thunderclan’s kits have been kidnapped. The kidnapped kits are Cinderkit, Brightkit, Thornkit, and Brackenkit. If these kits are alive, that means that it has definitely gotten to Into the Wild. Exile from Shadowclan happens right after Yellowfang’s secret so it couldn’t have been a year. Although we have no idea how old Graypaw, Ravenpaw, and Firepaw are, all we know is that they’re older than 6 moons but younger than 12 moons (although I think they’re not too far into their training so maybe 7-9moons? ). By Into the Wild, Barley is estimated to be at least 2yrs old. That calculates to 24 moons – 7 moons = 17 moons (1yr 5moons) But it can also be 24m-9m=15m (1yr3m) at the least. Going back to people seeing them as son and father, I think it would be impossible because at most their age gap would be 1yr 5moons which is 17 moons and presumably too young. Was Barley an adult by the time Ravenpaw was born? Yes. But in defence, what about Ivy x Fern, and Dust x Fern? Everyone loves those ships and they have even bigger age gaps. So really, Raven x Barley is on the minor side.
In conclusion, do they have a huge age gap? Nope! It’s still totally fine if you don’t ship them, since I know some people see them as friends. Ngl, I ship them for 2 reasons. First is because the Erin’s were intending to make them an actual couple, and second, because THERE IS SUCH A LACK OF LGBTQ+ CHARACTERS IN WARRIORS!! To top it off, aren’t they two consenting adults anyways?
That’s all I have for today! I hope you enjoyed reading! As always, please be respectful in the comments! Palepaw out <3
I agree! I love how it came out on pride month!
Love the article and i agree with everything you just said! I love BarleyXRaven! 🙂 And i think i’m the first comment!
Great article! (First?)
I ship RavenBarley 🙂
Great article, but I disagree. I don’t ship any age gaps that seem too….. gappy? I guess? Barley just gives off a lot of grandpa vibes and Ravenpaw’s a littler one. I ship them heavily platonically, but now romantically.
(not)
Great article but i disagree. RavenXBarley does have a massive age gap. Barley shows up in Yellowfang’s Secret, which is a book where even MISTYSTAR isn’t born yet. Ravenpaw was an apprentice when Mistystar was a warrior. That’s a giant age gap.
Wait- but if Mistystar was considered the oldest cat in the series, while Barley was alive, wouldn’t that make Mistystar older, thus meaning she was born? (Sorry if this is inaccurate I haven’t reread it for a while :P)
i think the erins just forgot how old they made barley 😛
Great article! I love RavenXBarley. They’re so cute together!!!
I do ship them, but in Ravenpaw’s Farewell it is revealed that Barley is at least 2 years older that Ravenpaw!
Great article! I agree, Ravenpaw at the time he moves to the barn is an adult (he’s two moons older than Firepaw and Greypaw, and both of them are around 12 moons old when they take Ravenpaw to the barn, making him 14 moons old) and all estimates including the one made in this article make him around 1-2 years older, which is not that large of a gap.
For a cat it kind of is…
For two adult cats, I don’t think so personally
I think the gap is more than two years. It’s at least three. think of it this way: the average lifespan for a cat is somewhere around 18 years. 3 of those is 1/6th of their life. If a human lives to be, say, 60, then 1/6th of that is 10. That means that their gap is more like 10 years than two, which is pretty big….
i agree. i love ravenpaw and barley is a cutie but i don’t ship them
By Barley’s own statement, it’s probably not more than two, and even his appearance in yellowfang’s secret could leave him younger than this because it was fairly close to the end of the book (the end of the book being yellowfang meeting firepaw) where he is described as a young cat, which could make him even apprenticed age in yellowfang’s secret
Great Article! Barley always appeared as more of an elder type of guy, so I didn’t ship them. They’ve always shown a more father-son relationship for me.
Yup
Great article! It’s really too bad that the LGBTQ+ relationships in warriors are so limited, and the ones that we do have others are always able to find problems with. I understand why there aren’t any overtly LGBTQ+ cats, but it’s disappointing to see a lack of representation towards the community.
Great article! I agree. I believe that age gaps should just be trashed. Like what is an acceptable age gap? For humans, there isn’t really one, so why should there be one for cats? Age gaps shouldn’t matter, and they don’t. IvyxFern is fine. BlossomxThorn is fine. RavenxBarley is fine. The only problem with ships like FernxDust is that Dustpelt took a liking to Fernpaw the moment she began training with him, which is very terrible. Otherwise, age gaps shouldn’t be such a big deal, and neither should random familial connections. In the case of FernxDust, Dustpelt is her uncle, kinda… It was a retcon made only by the (AWFUL) family tree. Brindleface and Dustpelt aren’t siblings and never will be. Real life cats don’t care about age gaps or familial connections when mating. They mate with cousins, aunt/uncles, and even full siblings! Age gaps don’t matter either. RavenxBarley is a great ship with tons of evidence behind it! Nobody should be able to tell you that it’s creepy or whatever. The first time they meet, Ravenpaw is Dustpaw and Sandpaw’s age, almost a warrior. In Ravenpaw’s Path, Ravenpaw is much beyond a warrior’s age. If you ship them, it’s fine! If you don’t, it’s fine! You do what you feel comfortable with!
*i forgot to clarify that Dustpelt’s liking to Fernpaw when she’s just apprenticed is bad because apprentices are confirmed to be teenagers while Dustpelt is an adult.
Great article!
I LOVE IT!
