Hello! It’s Frog! This is a bit different than my other articles! I’m going to talk about how to make good fanfic characters!
So first you need to make a good, strong, personality. If you’re writing one of these as a POV, you want to make sure you give them a lot of emotion. Readers want to hear how they react if someone is crushing on them or if one of their loved ones died, what would be their reaction?
You also want to avoid making your character a Gary sue or Mary Sue *cough, cough, Firestar, cough cough* I felt you didn’t know, Gary sues and Mary Sues are characters that don’t make mistakes. You want your main characters to have personality but not a perfect personality.
For example, one of my most well-written characters Leafstar, he’s actually the strongest cat Emberclan has ever seen. But he also failed his warrior assessment. Or my character Vinewhips, that fell in love with a DF cat. Your character should have some determination if they fail. Find someone they admire or someone they like. They need some inspiration. Maybe they can even inspire others!
You need some conflict too. You need some hated characters to make a good story. If everyone is liked, where would the drama be?But don’t put too much blame on the ‘bad character’. The ‘good character’ should’ve done something wrong too.
Like in my fan fiction, Maroonfur was a very bad father and is probably my most hated character (there’s something I can’t spoil for my readers 😉).
Or Whiteleaf and Gryffindusk will have some conflict because they both like the same cat. Conflict is a pretty important part in characters.
Try to avoid age gaps and related mates. This doesn’t bother me as much, but some people may not like it and just try your best to avoid them. You also want to make sure they don’t spend an eternity in the nursery.
Lastly, give them a good name. Sometimes description is the best way to go but if it’s someone like Brightheart, you would want to go personality. My next article will be name generators, so I hope you’ll like it! Sorry this was so short!
