Pinefur shines a spotlight on forgotten aspects of the Warriors world.
Hi everyone, today I feel like I should talk about a lot of the forgotten characters or plot points in warrior cats. I noticed a lot of things that the authors just seemed to throw away or forget about, and I’m going to tell you about the things I noticed.
So let’s start with some of the forgotten villains:
Sol – Sol is a very short-lived character in my eyes. He only appears in 4 of the main Power of Three books, and I think that’s a real shame, because I really liked Sol. I think it’s interesting to finally have a villain who doesn’t use claws. I found him so interesting, with similar goals to other bad cats, but a completely different tactic. The last time we saw him was when he swore he’d be back, but heโs not. When the imposter was present, I really believed it was Sol, because Sold used words to maul cats, and the imposter did the same. And when I found out it was Ashfur, I was a little disappointed. I bet Sol is too old a cat by now to return to the books as a villain.
Sleekwhisker and the other clan – Like Sol, the rogues were short-lived. Darktail only lasted 3 books, leaving the other 3 to be utterly boring. Although he reached havoc in that short time, I think he could have lived even longer along with the clan. When Darktail was dead, the kin scattered and Sleekwisker went with them. However, she came back with Yarrowleaf and begged to join the clan. But just as she was beginning to become accepted back, she blew it and conspired with the rogues to attack Shadowclan. She is also one of the few female villains but she was never seen again after that, nor were any of the other kin.
Bloodclan – So I know that Bloodclan is not a villain, but a band of rogues whose leader was a villain, but they play a big part in the last book of Series 1, The Darkest Hour. And like the Kin, they fell into obscurity. They both ruled over the territory for a very brief time and disappeared never to be seen again. I feel like maybe when the cats went on all of their missions out of the lake territory, when in the twoleg place, they could have met the last remains of the bloodclan. I would like to know what happened to them. Did they scatter like the kin, with Scourge gone, did a new leader arise, was this cat also evil or good? I feel like there’s a void of information about Bloodclan after the battle and Scourge’s death.
So now, let’s talk about some abilities that cats have that are never brought up again after their use. Starting withโฆ
Leafpool and Squirrelstar telepathy – Do you even remember this? It was all the way back in the second series. When Squirrelpaw was on the mission about the sundrown place, I only remember Leafpaw being able to talk to Squirrelpaw on the journey and telling her that burdock root helps against rat bites. And I know it’s used at other times too, but unfortunately not after the series. I feel like maybe it could have been used during the whole Jayfeather, Lionblaze and Hollyleaf situation where Leafpool could have talked to Squirrelflight about it in her mind about something. But no. I could have been used when Starclan was cut off. Maybe Squirrelflight could have talked to Leafpool through her thoughts when Leafpool was in Starclan. Maybe more could have been found out that way. But it is never mentioned again.
Millie can talk to dogs – This is something that has only appeared once before in a graphic novel. Greystripe’s Adventure. Greystripe is trapped and surrounded by two dogs when Millie shows up, barks at them and they leave. It is revealed that Millie can talk to dogs in the basic language. She then teaches it to the barn cats and that’s it. We never hear about it again. Maybe Millie could have taught it to the clans, then it would have been useful in many dog attacks. But as always, it seems to disappear as if it was never there.
And now, my last point:
Apprentices have to go to the moonstone before they become warriors – โฆ Yeah, so, this is only mentioned once during the whole books as far as I can recall. When Bluestar went to the moonstone, Sandpaw and Dustpaw were jealous. But Greypaw told Firepaw that every apprentice has to go before they become warriors. First of all, this doesn’t even make sense, itโs not like A leader dies that often, or is in a crisis so much. Quite rarely in fact do leaders visit their sacred place that is oh so important to them. But anyways, back to the point. Almost all the time, cats are made warriors without visiting the moonstone/pool. It’s like what was said in the first book was just forgotten. When cats went to the moonpool to break the ice in the 7th series, all the cats, including the senior warriors were awed by its beauty. Clearly, they’ve never seen it. And the medicine cats were also very annoyed to have warriors around. And this quickly spoken sentence that Greypaw said, was forgotten.
Anyways, thanks for reading my article, I hope you find it interesting. Tell me other forgotten things in the warrior cats books, and I’ll see you in my next article.
All of this is true except the last one. Sandstorm made a remark in The New Prophecy about the discontinuation of that tradition as of the Clansโ transition to the lake territories. That plot point wasnโt forgotten, it was discontinued.
I suspect this is because the tradition of apprentices going to the Moonpool was made to give the main character a way to see StarClan, and the authors didnโt need it anymore when they decided to have a medicine cat protagonist every arc, who would go to the Moonpool regardless of the tradition.
Amazing article, Pinefur! I agree with all of your points.
I always think about how arc six with Leafpool and Squirrelstar could have been different if they kept the sister telepathy
I never noticed that the Leafpool and Squirrelstar telepathy and Millie’s ability to talk to dogs disappeared!!! Also, for the last one, I used to think that they stopped this because ThunderClan was getting too big for everyone to go, but Mallopaw’s explanation is much better. Great article!!!
I do think they should’ve kept telepathy!
Great article!
Yeah, there was a lot of plot lines and potential story ideas that were lost throughout the series. I do believe that the tradition of apprentices going to the Moonstone was a beautiful one, and them not going to the Moonpool before becoming warriors has in part slowly led to the decadence and spiritual disconnect we see in the Clans, as well as the books themselves. StarClan is no longer sacred.
One more forgotten plot point I would like to add is from the short story “After Sunset: The Right Choice?” At the end, Brambleclaw laments: that whatever he does, he will destroy his own Clan from within. Then, we get this: “The blood roared in Leafpool’s ears, and her eyes were dazzled by the red glow of the setting sun as it turned the lake crimson. Brambleclaw’s words didn’t sound like a threat: They sounded like a prophecy.”
It would’ve been interesting if, starting in or even after A Vision of Shadows, his words are referenced back as ThunderClan starts to wither away or tear itself apart under his rule. Perhaps Leafpool could’ve quietly mentioned them to Alderheart while he vents his frustration of his father doing nothing about SkyClan. Then, when The Broken Code takes off and “Bramblestar” causes a lot of division, Alderheart remembers and/or repeats these words, etc.
Make a second one, Pls!
