Mates That Are Not Talked About Part 2: Riverstar and Finch Song by Dewpaw

Dewpaw takes a look at Riverstar and Finch Song’s relationship.

Hi peeps! It’s Dewpaw here with part 2 of mates that aren’t talked about enough! 👋
Last time I talked about Sorrelstripe and Dewnose, and I came to the conclusion that they were pretty bad mates. Today for part 2, I’ll be talking about Riverstar and Finch Song!
(Spoiler warning for Riverstar’s Home!!!!!!!!)

Are they related?
Well….probably. Since we don’t know who Riverstar’s parents are there’s no way to know for sure. Although they’re both from the Cats of the Park so that means they’re most likely related.

How did these two characters get together?
It’s a pretty long story but I’ll shorten it as best as I can. When Riverstar left the Cats of the Park, he left his soon to be mate Flutter as well. After leading RiverClan for a while, he came back to what used to be his home. There, he met Finch! (Later Finch Song) But when he had to leave, he had to say goodbye to Finch as well…..and his soon to be born kits. Luckily, just as they set off Finch came along with them.
So yeah…..that’s basically what happened.

Do they seem to love each other?
Yes. They certainly do. When Riverstar had to leave the Cats of the Park, he was devastated that he had to leave Finch Song and his unborn kits as well. Finch Song was also sad that he had to leave, but then she followed him back to RiverClan which is seemingly the act of true love.

Do they seem to be good parents to their kits?
I’m gonna say yes. We never really saw that much of their kits: Arc Shadow, Dusk Smoke and Ripple Shine but when they had just been born, both Riverstar and Finchsong looked like they were majorly happy and proud. I think that’s the best those kits could’ve asked for.

Why did they not have ANOTHER litter of kits?
Okay I get it, some cats just want to have a couple of kits, not like, a MILLION! *cough, cough, Ferncloud, cough* Anyways, they seemed like they loved each other a good bit! So why not have more kits? Maybe they loved Ripple Shine, Dusk Smoke and Arc Shadow too much that they couldn’t imagine having more kits. Or, like I said before, maybe they only wanted three kits. Those could be possible answers, but the one that makes the MOST since to me would be this one: Riverstar was the leader of RiverClan. That means most of his time would be focused on his Clan, not his mate and kits. Finch Song on the other hand, has always been a devoted warrior. Maybe she just wanted to defend and hunt for her Clan instead of lying around in the nursery all day. But I don’t know these things for sure. (It’s just my opinion)

Two pretty similar personalities:
Riverstar has always been known as the leader who is calm and think before his actions. Finch Song can be a bit more rambunctious but she has a calm and quiet side to her as well. I think they fit together nicely, in terms of personality.

Does Riverstar ever wish he’d been Flutter’s mate, not Finch Song’s?
I think he does a little bit. When he first met Finch you could always see that regret that Riverstar had. Sure, I know he likes Finch Song but there is something in him that wishes that he’d gone back to save Flutter from the twolegs. Even though he knew she had gone to StarClan…..I think he thought that he was betraying Flutter to Finch Song.

Does Finch Song believe that following Riverstar to RiverClan was the right choice?
I think she’s kind of in the middle. The reason she came to RiverClan was to be with Riverstar. She didn’t want to raise her kits without their father, she also just wanted to be with Riverstar. But she’s probably sad she left the Cats of the Park. I’m sure she missed her father Owl and all of her other friends. In the end though, she most likely realized that she DID make the right choice.

Are they good mates?
Definitely! Even though they had their regrets, they seemed to dedicate to each other. They were pretty good parents to their kits: Arc Shadow, Ripple Shine and Dusk Smoke. They are also good cats that play a nice example in their Clan. Riverstar being a leader, while Finch Song being a well respected warrior.
