Hey people so I’m trying out my first oil pastel painting and I’d appreciate if you guys had any tips! Sadly I only have the basic rainbow colors+ white but maybe I can mix :p ? It’s a vase of flowers and I’m nearly done with the sketch
Hi Strangey! I haven’t used oil pastels in a while, but here are some pointers!
1. Make sure you know what you’re doing. If you’re creating a new line, that isn’t in your sketch, make sure you draw lightly with the pastel. If not, and you make a mistake, it’ll stick to the paper after endless erasing (true story: I did that, and now there’s a blue line on one of my drawings 😛 )
2. I’m not exactly sure if you can use blending pencils/stumps with oil (pretty sure you can!) so I’d look for cheap sticks! They also work for graphite and charcoal, if you use those mediums too. But blending is a great way to make things look seamless.
3. Layer. Layering is a huge part of drawing with oil pastel (or pencilcrayons, those you also have to layer) so don’t go in too hard on your first stroke!
4. Last tip, I swear. When you draw, you’ll find that your pastels will pick up the colour of the other layers on your painting. To clean them, just wipe the different edges with paper towel – it works like magic! (And yes, i do believe in magic /j [from your display name])

Any advice on lighting in digital and traditional art?
*deep breath*
For digital art, on top of your layer, create a new layer. Then set the blending mode to ‘multiply’. This layer will be your shadow layer.
To create highlights, create a new layer, and this time, change the mode to add. This makes your highlights become a lot brighter.
I’d suggest change the opacity of both of the layers, make more layers and well, layer them, and just fiddle around with the rest of the blending modes. It’s really fun!
For physical art, it really depends on the medium. I’d suggest leaving space on your page for your highlights and shadows, and fill them in after.
This is just the basics of what you can do with art, really play around on whatever app you use or with pencils, you lean learn a lot more than what I can write in a comment 😛
Tbh, I might make a more in-depth tutorial and share it, but in the meantime, if you (or anyone else!) needs advice, I’ll always be there! 🙂

OK! Lets go!
So I’m going to write about: Procreate, charcoal/graphite, and watercolor. If you dont use those media, sorry!!!!
Procreate: OVERLAY and MULTIPLY are your best friend! ALWAYS remember to choose a light source, whether it be front, behind, side, overhead, etc. Choose a contrasting color to your piece (Maybe if its a very light skinned character, you could try a dark coral, or for other pieces you could try a deep blue, point is it should be rather dark).
There’s two methods for this:
1. make a new layer and completely fill it. Move it to overlay/multiply (hard light also works, it’s whatever you feel comfortable with!) and lower the opacity as you please. now ERASE the areas you want to be in the light. You’re basically chipping away the lighter parts little by little!
2. You can do the opposite way. Make the same layer with overlay/multiply, but DONT FILL IT. Just color in your darker shades, and you can do the lighter ones with white on a different layer and play with the opacity. Depending on if you blend it or not, you end up with a more cartoony/anime(?) feel. an example of this method: https://freeimage.host/i/2u64B6J
OK! Now onto charcoal and graphite!
I’m going to do a realistic demo, but you can apply this to literally anything.
1. Find your BASE color. I’ll be using an image I found on pexels to illustrate this.

2. Find the lightest/mostly lightest value. In this photo it seems to be a darker grey. So, I suggest either you a) completely tone the paper with some good old charcoal or b) use toned paper!
3. Find your LARGEST VALUES. (Before this you should make a basic sketch but everyone does that differently so you do you) For this photo, I see multiple shapes you can use to dissect this! (Its not very well done bc I can’t draw AT ALL on my pc lol)

4. Work smaller as you go! Use a white pencil or small eraser for lighter values, etc etc.

NEVER USE STRAIGHT BLACK FOR DARK VALUES. NEVER. USE. BLACK. (I mean sometimes you do-)
You’ll actually apply values almost the exact same as the 2nd digital demo, but it’s a bit different. Instead of a really dark grey or black, consider mixing brown or indigo with your base color. For example, If you’re painting a tree and one side is a lot darker than the other, instead of using black or grey to make those values, consider adding a Paynes grey TO YOUR GREEN or also an indigo or navy blue, depending on your lighting.
For lighter values, either just do a light wash at the beginning or you can dab water on the area you want lighter and press a paper towel on it to pick up the paint, but this only works on certain kinds of paper

Make sure you know which direction you want the light to be coming from, and shade or highlight based on that! It helps me to draw a circle for the sun or light, and draw rays pointing towards the thing I’m drawing. I’m not an expert, but that’s something I learned in art class last year.
