Hi Mousebrain! Just wanted to pop by and ask about this little program you’ve made 😀 It’s pretty useful, so that got me thinking about whether or not I could code something similar for BlogTeam’s usage (since we have a couple of other potential parameters that the general public are not privy to). If you’re not too protective over your implementation, would you mind sharing with me what tools you used? For all the things my university taught me, they never really got around to web scraping 😛

I didn’t make it too complicated, was just messing around in Python soup4 and wasn’t originally planning to make something (If I knew that I was going to make this an actual project I probably would have used JS puppeteer or smth) then I just dumped all comments into a JSON (don’t have a database.. ikik 🥲) and setup a HTML/CSS/JS frontend for it.
also if you are making something for BlogTeam’s use… could I help code it? I’m trying to make useful stuff lol… most of my stuff isn’t very useful… also if you don’t mind me asking, what are these secret parameters you speak of 👀?

Helping to code it might be a little bit more complicated. Those secret parameters I’m referring to are actually personal information attached to each comment that we mods have access to. Specifically, it’s the email field and the IP address that the comment was made from. I’m sure you can understand a bit of hesitancy on my part to allow a regular BlogClanner (even a Helper, like our new Calendar Helpers) access to that kind of information.
I’ll also say that anything you make, even the ones you think aren’t useful, are still good practice and parts of your programming portfolio! If it showcases your willingness to learn, adapt, and use the tools you discover efficiently, it’s quite a useful project, isn’t it? 😛

Yeah, maybe if I put it on a server it could run the scripts to update the JSON automatically every hour or so, but the client side runs ok (maybe I should add indexing to make it faster? I heard lunr.js could do something like that, haven’t tried it yet) and at least I don’t need to constantly be bombing Blogclan’s servers with requests for every search lol…
Alternatively, instead of sending the whole JSON to the client I could send requests from the client for data to a db on a server
Internally, maybe having a page update function, or better, instead of scraping just accessing the location the comments that are stored in the wordpress. If you have access to the Blogclan server you could make an internal search API which would be a lot faster than this external stuff

1. Unfortunately, I don’t actually have access to the site’s database (I probably should ask Kate for that at some point…), but I could probably find a workaround with exporting the comments with a plugin.

A decent while ago (almost a year is my guess) I posted something on the Fan Fiction Organization Page about asking for names for a rogue group I was creating. My display name had ‘Mallowpaw’ somewhere in it and Flakepatch replied to my comment, giving a lot of information about his rogue name, Hatchet. CloudPaw/Song also replied to the comment with a ridiculously long rogue name (and some information about it) that I forget. If possible, can you try to find this comment?
Also, if you can’t find it with the details provided, I don’t believe that I’ve made many comments on the Fan Fiction Organization Page anyway, and this one was likely one of the earliest ones I made on that page.
I don’t know if you’d be able to find the comments based off this information, but thank you for looking anyway.

I could! But so that my computer doesn’t explode, tell me which page/pages you think it would be in! (ex: Tavern, Polls, Introduction, etc.). If you’re not sure, I could search all of the main (not-secret, not-discussion) pages for you!

Details (If you want to know):
As an unofficial mod, I can't really search WordPress Logs like official mods do, I write code to do all of it externally through standard HTTP requests (what computers use to communicate in WWW). The reason you need to tell me what pages is because I don't have enough processing power to create a spider and brute force the directory structure to find every HTML file on BlogClan and extract comments from it lol. That would be massive and take probably hours of querying every time the server runs the update script. (Think about it, every time someone uploads an image, it becomes a secret page which the spider must check.) It would also slow down the entire process and the website would take long to load. Maybe I'll tackle that after exam season and try to optimize everything... BlogSearch v2.0? Written In JS or maybe even... Rust?!?Ok hmmm I think it may have been tavern or on some kind of article lol idk maybe introduce urself?
