Are any of you members of a book club?
I’m starting one at my library on Monday for 12-15 year olds, and I’m really excited! Right now we are four members, but I hope we will be five or six.
Anyway, the first book we will read is Six of Crows, because I’ve heard that it’s really good. The members can choose if they want to read in Swedish or English.
So, does anyone here have any experience with running a book club?
What are the hardest things?
I have been part of a book club run by a librarian when I was 9-12 years old, but this time I’m in charge. 😛
Any good book recommendations? I read almost everything, but please recommend books that aren’t too hard to read (I don’t want to scare away my book club members on our first meeting 😅).
not in a book club but darn it i love six of crows :3
I’m not in a book club but my younger brother is with some of his friends! It seems like the hardest part is coordinating the timing of things-for instance, sometimes people don’t get their books on time, then don’t read their books on time, and then they have to reschedule the meetings etc etc, and it can get hard to find meeting times during busy points in the school year which can mean they sometimes end up meeting months after they finished the book they’re supposed to discuss 😛 they seem to have a lot of fun overall though!
I’m lucky to have a librarian to help me with those parts 😛 She orders the right amount of books and then we get them on the right time. Then we can keep them longer than you usually can keep a library book. For this first meeting, though, we only had one week to get all of the books, therefore we only got five copies, all in Swedish. Now we are six members, but I think we can solve the problem if me and my brother share one copy.
Thanks for the advice though. 😀 I will schedule the meetings once a month, so I don’t think there will be a problem with keeping up in school, since we only meet for a little more than an hour. 🙃
I’m not in a book club, nor have I ever, but Six of Crows is a fantastic book! another book you can try is Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross hehe
omg i second this divine rivals is amazinggg
I love Rebecca Ross’s other books and I’ve thought about looking into Divine Rivals, but I’ve heard it has some adult content, how bad is it?
not too bad at all, in my opinion. i think there was one scene in the first book, but it wasn’t described at all. it was just kinda common sense that it was even happening 😛 /lh overall i really recommend it 🙂
Okay, thanks! I’ll definitely look into it then!
np!!
My friend is reading Divine Rivals and she told me about it, it sounds absolutely awesome
I’m not in a book club but I’ve started reading Six of Crows and it’s soo good so far
Not in a book club (though I think it’d be fun), but Six of Crows / Crooked Kingdom are two of my favorite books and my all-time favorites out of the Grishaverse series. The characters are excellent, the plot’s very intriguing and involving, and the writing itself is amazing — you’re in for a treat!
What are your opinions on Six of Crows? I tried to read it a few months back but grew a bit bored- but I’ve been hearing so much about how good it is, should I try it again?
The first half is a bit slow, but stick with it and you won’t regret it!
Exactly what Redblaze said! It’s pretty slow and boring at the beginning, but I stuck with it and now I’m obsessed.
(Not related to books, but the lyrics in your name are excellent)
Oh thanks! I just scoured the corners of my brain for lyrics that gave fall vibes to me lol
Yesss We Fell In Love In October is amazingg
IT’S AWESOME
a couple of months ago i also tried it because of the hype – i didn’t last 10 minutes. everything was so confusing; it felt as if i was being swept into a whirlwind of info. i just didn’t get it. i still don’t even know what gender the first pov was- 💀💀🥲 who knows, maybe i might pick it up again at some point. but for now, it’s probably gonna be a dnf for me.
(also: this is just my opinion. if you love six of crows please don’t be offended lol)
if you mean the first first PoV(Joost, not a main character), he’s reffered to by he/him pronouns in the first sentence!
I’ve been wondering the same thing. I read Shadow and Bone book 1 and basically had to force myself to read most of it, and I want to know, if Six of Crows the same? Also, do I need to read the rest of the Shadow and Bone trilogy in order to read Six of Crows?
Six of Crows is a significantly better book than Shadow and Bone in my opinion!! I love SoC but can barely stand Shadow and Bone 😛 you don’t need the trilogy to read SoC!
This! Shadow and Bone was Leigh’s debut and it’s pretty rough around the edges (and very, very cliche) but she improves so much and SoC is excellent.
It’s definitely worth it! One of my favorite books in the Grishaverse. I think once you get to know the characters more, everything starts to pick up, and personally for me I liked the second one better. I became very quickly obsessed with it 😛
it is my favorite book. It starts somewhat slow, but that’s because it takes it’s time to build. I love all the characters and their interactions. it’s so interesting and fun to read!
and the HEIST
it’s so good
please read it
I’m reading it right now, and I’m really enjoying it! Right now, I wouldn’t say the plot is super fast, but it isn’t actually boring. I would recommend reading it! 🙂
The first part is a bit boring, but if you keep going it gets really good!
If you read the Warrior Cats series, you kind of HAVE to read Wings of Fire. For some reason, most people who have read or been a fan of WC have found Wings of Fire to be amazing. Tui T. Sutherland, the author, actually wrote Squirrelflight’s Hope with Erin Hunter. Anyways, it’s an amazing series about dragons. You’d love it!
Wings of Fire is actually how I found out about Warrior Cats! I discovered that Tui was an Erin and thought Warrior Cats would be great. Well look where I am now 😛 Anyways, I’m pretty sure Tui T. Sutherland is only an editor of the Warriors series, except for the retconned Secrets of the Clans.
Back to the topic of Wings of Fire, who’s your favorite character and why? Mine’s Sunny because she resonates best with me 😀
Same, that’s how I found Warriors. I love Wings of Fire, and my fav character MUST be Moon and/or Qibli.
I love WoF, yall don’t know how hype i was back in the day for the poison jungle release and dragonslayer
I’ve heard they’re awesome, but tbh I have too much to read already. I’m trying to make my way through all warriors books after a while but then I’m done with that genre 😛 I mean, there’s just so much stuff you can read so I don’t really have the energy to enter a whole new fandom :3
I love WoF
I liked WoF when I was in middle school, but tbh I kind of outgrew it eventually, same with Warriors, after they added that new continent I didn’t really care that much. I loved Glory though, I shipped Glorybringer like there was no tomorrow 😛
Best ship👌👌
Same lol
BUT THE AGE GAPPPPP
I agree! Wings of Fire is amazing <3 And I didn’t know Tui wrote Squirrelflight’s Hope with the Erins, that’s so cool!
Has anyone read The Fault In Our Stars by John Green? Made me cry!
It includes a bit of sexual content and profanity, and it’s about two teens with cancer that fall in love with each other 🙂
Def recommendo
Yup! It’s not my favorite genre but I did enjoy it overall
I liked it, felt like it was a little overrated though, but I also didn’t cry over it
I enjoyed it, it’s not the best but I still think it was pretty good. Turtles All the Way Down is another of John Green’s books and I liked it much more, I think all the character relationships and dialogue and plot were better, and I related with the characters more since I’m both in Aza and Daisy’s positions (also the irony that I ruined a library book about OCD because of OCD…)
I don’t hate it but the characters are about as nuanced as a bag of rocks (theodorus or augustus or whatever the male love interest’s name is is literally just a ‘manic pixie dream girl’ but as a tall athletic dude) and the protagonist isn’t terribly likeable either. I will say the ending was pretty good tho
This might sound horrible but I started reading it and could not get into it 😭😭 I can’t remember why but it just didn’t stick. Should I try again?
Any Wingfeather Saga fans here? 😀
I haven’t managed to get my hand on the books yet, but I LOVED the show 😀 I really reallyyyyyyyyyyy want to read it awetjsymxhtngfrhc
YESSSS the show is super good but the book is SO MUCH BETTER! The first book is a bit slow-going but it’s REALLY GOOD!
I’ve actually not finished season 2 yet….I WANT TO SEE HOW THEY PORTRAY THE OVERSEER 😀
OMG SAMEEEEE I’ve seen the first 2 episodes of the 2nd season but I can’t seem to find the rest 😭😭😭 fingers crossed though!!!
yeah, i love it! i haven’t reread it in a while- maybe after my current read i’ll do that
Meeeee! I need to watch the show but my life is CHAOS rn 😭
I’ve never read it! What’s it about?
so after nagging from multiple people, i’m finally going to read One Piece. i am NOT watching the show i do NOT have enough time for 1,300+ episodes. I’ll just watch WitPiece when it comes out
you know what i do have time for? 1,000+ chapters. hahaha. It’ll take me a month or two. But anyway before that i’m reading a different manga called No. 6 (lets just say i could feel the librarian judging me when i picked all these books up. to be fair it was A Lot). asiusobus it’s so good. All my wildest hopes and dreams have come true just 4 books in. take that as you will
anyway i didn’t know there was an anime for it so maybe at some point i’ll watch that. so have any of you read No. 6? What’s your current read?
Haven’t read any of those, but I have watched the live-action One Piece show!!!! It was really cool and way shorter than the bajillion episode anime- I’d 100% recommend it!!!
That sounds really cool! That’s a lot of chapters and episodes 😭 No 6 sounds awesome, but I haven’t read it! And my read at the moment is Six of Crows <3 And technically Telesa, a book I am being forced to read for English, and it is genuinely the worst piece of literature I have ever set eyes on. I have to stop after every page because of the pure agony I feel when reading it. The author should never have been allowed near paper. It is actually so bad words cannot describe it; EVERYTHING is terrible. The characters, the plot, the romantic relationships, everything is so so so so bad I cannot comprehend how the author could mess it up this badly.
Ooh, cool! I haven’t read it, but I’ve heard about it from my friend (who is a HUGE fan of One Piece)
I’ve been reading the Giver , it’s required in CA, and just…
Okay.
I could rant about how much I hate it, but I’ll same your time
Sorry to whomever likes it
😭 it’s a good book thoooo /lh
the worldbuilding is exquisite, but the ending felt like a slight letdown tbh. overall i really enjoyed the book… until the end of it
I think it’s a well written book, but most of my classmates(including myself), were not ready for the adult themes. The world building is super well done. I don’t like the book that much, but I think it’s something everyone should read.
what adult themes? /genq
i had to read it for class last year and i dont really remember any mature themes?
i read the giver around four years ago, but i’m pretty sure there are some themes of forced pregnancy, infanticide, suicide, and euthanasia. some people may have different opinions and consider these adult themes, especially -paws. though the giver is an amazing book, i agree with olive: there are some mature themes in the book. /lh /nm
In what grade do they make you read it? I live in California and haven’t had to read it yet
I nearly had to read The Giver last year, but we ended up reading Juno of Taris instead 😛 Feel free to rant to me about it!
The Bone Witch trilogy is definitely a must read. It’s a dark fantasy. It is listed as a young adult book though because of violence, some mature topics, and some kissing. I won’t let myself read it for a month or two after reading it so I a bit of the thrill I got when I read it the first time
Ooooh sounds cool!!! 😀
It sounds awesome!
I want to read a book
Do you need some recommendations? What types of books are you interested in?
seconding shrubs here!
what kind of books do you like? do you like ya or middle-grade? i’m sure there a lots of people here who would be happy to help you find a book 🙂
Here’s some recommendations!
Folk of the Air trilogy
This series is one of my favourites. It follows Jude, a human girl brought to the Faerie world (the reason is revealed in the prologue and chapter 1) who lives with the Fae man who killed her parents, the Faerie general, Madoc. She has lived her entire life feeling like she isn’t enough, due to her and her twin sister being a human surrounded by fantasy creatures and people. She faces bullying at the hands of Cardan, the prince of Elfhame (the name for that part of the Faerie land). She wants to be in the king’s army very badly, but knows due to her being human she never shall. Then a prince (not Cardan) comes to her and recruits her to be a spy for him, because she can lie. The Fae cannot lie – they can only give half truths. Obviously, lying is useful for a spy, hence why Jude was recruited. Now, she is thrown into a world of treachery and politics (not annoying, stressful politics, Faerie politics) that throws everyone into a world of uncertainty. It is so good – the characters are well written, the romance is actually good, and the world is really cool.
A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder trilogy (plus the prequel, Killjoy)
This series is also one of my favourites. It follows Pip, a hardworking “good” girl (but not in an annoying way, don’t worry) who is doing a school project that involves looking into the infamous case that occurred in her town. Five years ago, Andie Bell was murdered, right there in Pip’s town Little Kilton. Her body was never found, but a murderer was convicted – Andie’s boyfriend, Sal. Pip knows he didn’t do it, and is determined to prove it. The first book follows her working closely with Sal’s younger brother, Ravi, to prove Sal’s innocence. The second book follows Pip being stalked and looking into an old murder case that could be connected to her stalker. The last book is the most exciting, action packed thing you will ever read – I could not put the book down. I highly highly recommend this series!!!
Five Survive
This standalone book was written by the same author as the A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder series (Holly Jackson, our angel <3). It is about six friends travelling to this holiday site in a RV, when one night, the wheels are shot out. The shooter makes one thing clear: someone in that RV has a secret, and when that person reveals it, they will be killed. But everyone else will live (hence the name, Five Survive). But they all have secrets, and we don’t know who has THE secret, or who will die. It is so so so so good!!!!
If you need any more recommendations or if you’ve read these books, let me know <33 Hope this helps!
asdfghjkl folk of the air sounds like my type of book!!! what age would you recommend it for? 😀
A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder is an amazing book! The characters are actually three dimensional and the plot is complex and intriguing unlike most other books of this genre. I enjoyed it from the start to finish. I haven’t read the rest of the series, tho- I probably should.
The Folks of the Air trilogy and Five Survive sound great as well, they’ll definitely going on my list. Thanks for the recommendations!
Has anyone else read the Pegasus series by Kate O’Hearen? It’s really good, though I haven’t read it in a bit, but I think that a lot of blogclanners would like it since I have similar book taste to a lot of y’all. It’s greek mythology related and really good, but i’ve never met anyone who reads it.
OH MY GOSH YES
I own the entire series!!! I never finished reading them all (I have only read the first three if I remember correctly) but it was so good!!! I absolutely loved it! I highly recommend to anyone looking for another read!
It sounds good, if I ever see it, I’ll give it a try!
i have a friend who’s read it! she says it’s really good, and i’m debating looking into it. if i can find it in my library, i’ll give it a try 😀
Greek mythology??? I’m interested 😛
ooo sounds good 😀
No, but it sounds great- I love mythology related books. I should check it out sometime :DD
I started it a few years ago and couldn’t get into it at all, all the characters felt flat and annoyed me, and the love triangle wasn’t well done at all in my opinion, I got the entire series from the library and skipped around the books before finally just reading the last one to see how it ended 😛
Has anyone read The Last Cuentista by Donna Barba Higuera? It’s a really good science fiction book for older kits/apprentices (Has implied death, brief vomiting, and comas) and I would definitely recommend!
Ooh I have that on my shelf but I haven’t got to it yet! Glad to know it’s good 😀
Sounds cool; I’ll check it out!!
No, I haven’t read it, but it sounds great!
