  • You stumble through the dark tunnel, slipping on the smooth floor as you go. Suddenly, the floor gives out and you are falling through the darkness, your screams echoing in the shadows.
“Welcome,” Lumen says with a small smile as you land on a giant mushroom, bouncing off of it and landing roughly on the ground in front of him. The new cavern is brightly lit and huge. It is also filled with gnomes.
Lots and lots of gnomes. You can’t see the end of the cavern, and the gnomes seem to stretch on forever. They are in the seven colors of the rainbow, each with a number tied around their neck.
“This trial is a logical one,” Lumen says. “Guess the correct gnome, and you will win. However, each time you guess incorrectly, the gnome will change, but the previously guessed gnome will tell you what the former correct gnome was. There are patterns. Each color of gnome has one million gnomes. Every other incorrect guess is a fault, and if you fail this trial you will get 20 faults.”

So, tell me the number and color of gnome you are guessing, and I’ll tell you if you’re wrong or right!

    • Jax-
“How fascinating,” Jax murmured, peering down at one of the gnomes. He stretched, rubbing at his back, which was aching from bouncing off of the mushroom. “Anyone have any guesses?”

Jax is now going to be extremely unhelpful now because I know what the pattern is 😛

      • Merlin-

Merlin frowned, “I don’t know.” He fiddled with his scarf, “Is this logic? Do we just have to guess at first?” He waited for someone else to take the first guess, this sort of thing made him nervous.

        • (Wait, seven colors of the rainbow? Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple. Am I missing one? rip me)

          -Kelly-

Kelly shrugged. “Um, he said it was logic. But I can’t tell how we’re even supposed to begin.” She sat down, trying to think. “Purple is my favorite color, so I want to go with that… There’s several million gnomes, how do we pick a number?” She pulled at her short, black hair.

            • (red orange yellow green blue indigo purple 😛 )
              Jax-
“I would assume that are first few guesses aren’t meant to be correct,” Jax reasoned, poking one of the gnomes with his shoe. The gnome glared up at him, and he studied it quizzically. “Lumen said we’d find out what the correct answer was after we guess, so maybe we should just give it a couple random shots and then look for patterns.”

            • (Indigo feels left out now :(( )

              Aria –
Aria narrowed her eyes thoughtfully. “I suppose we just guess a few random colors and numbers to figure out what the pattern is.” She fingered the edge of her cowl absentmindedly, wrinkling her nose. “Purple?” The hybrid shrugged. The color didn’t matter. “We could do thirteen,” she suggested.

              • (Wait what about Violet?! Violet is literally crying now XD)

                Merlin-

“Makes sense,” he shrugged, stroking his scarf self consciously. “Is thirteen your lucky number then? Most people find it unlucky.”

                • (Blue is crying. Minnie never told her indigo existed)

Kelly bit her lip. “Twelve is my lucky number… Just below thirteen.” She grimaced as soon as the words were out of her mouth. That is literally so not important right now. She dug her feet as far into the ground as possible and took a deep breath. “We’re going to fail this,” she grumbled, “and miserably.”

                • Kash-
Kash, having said nothing, had walked silently after Kelly. “I don’t think we’re going to fail,” he said, though he had his doubts.

                • (Oh haha thanks! 😛)

                  Merlin-

“Well I think we are!” he said, rather cheerfully, “Think about it, 7 colours, 1 million numbers on each- that’s 6,999,999 wrong possibilities!”

                • Jax-
“If it were impossible, Lumen wouldn’t be wasting our time by making us fail if we didn’t have a chance,” Jax said brightly. “Besides, I’m sure the other group is struggling as well.” He clapped his hands together, grinning. “I personally think that we can do it.”

                • -Kelly-

“How did I get surrounded by optimists?” Kelly hissed. She shook her head to clear it. In that case… “Could I make the first guess, then?”

                • Merlin-

“Go for it,” he shrugged, “At least that way I won’t be the first to get it wrong. And was that sarcasm? I’ve been told I’m more of a pessimist, myself.”

                • Jax-
“Go ahead,” he told Kelly cheerfully. “I’ve always found being an optimist to be much more fun than being pessimistic.” He looked away, still smiling, studying the nearest gnome to distract himself. Being an optimist was his only option. Hope was all he had left.

                • (hey frosto)

                  Aria –
Aria snorted. “I’m certainly not an optimist,” she remarked. “I should think that should be obvious, considering the nickname Jax was so kind to give me.” She glared at the elf. Then, she turned her head slowly to look at Merlin. She grinned evilly. “Thirteen is indeed my lucky number. And you have already voiced the reason.” Without waiting for his reply, she turned back to Lumen. “We could stand here and bicker all day. We should just pick something and stick with it.” Aria spoke to Lumen next. “We’re doing purple, thirteen.”

                • -Kelly-

Kelly whipped around and glared at Aria. She bit her tongue harshly. I was going to guess. But there would be no point now, and it would’ve been foolish to pick a gnome only one number below hers. Still, part of her wanted to slap the girl. In order to distance herself, she backed away from her, her tongue gripped tightly between her teeth. Be a good teammate, Kelly. She told herself. Don’t rip her face off.

                • Result:
A purple gnome wearing a number thirteen waddled forwards, grinning evily. “Nope, stupid head,” it snarled, shaking it’s little pointed hat. “It was Purple gnome #3, but not any more since you guessed wrong. Good luck on your next guess,” it added with a nasty smile, “You’ll need it.”

                  Jax-
Jax glanced over at Holly, once again puzzling over her behavior. No matter how hard she seemed to be trying to be prickly, he didn’t dislike her. “Well, at least your guess had a three in it,” he said cheerfully, shooting the rude gnome a glare. “We couldn’t hardly expect to get it right on the first try.”

                • Aria –
Aria shrugged. She hadn’t expected to be right. She could sense daggers flying from Kelly’s eyes into the back of her head, and she turned around to face the girl. Pleasure rippled through her as she saw her furious glare. Upset, are we? Angry that nasty little Aria guessed instead of you? She grinned wickedly. Finally, one eye slid down in a slow wink, and she was still grinning as she turned back to the purple gnome, paying Kelly no further attention. Aria rather liked the gnome; it was spunky, and rude, and for once she didn’t mind being called “stupid head.” She shifted her attention to Jax as she heard his attempt at consoling her. She glared at him. “Thanks. That’s really encouraging,” she snapped sarcastically. Why did the determinedly cheerful elf always have to be so… happy? She shook her head. Annoying as it was, it wasn’t important. “So we know purple, three is in the pattern. I suppose the only thing we can do is guess again.”

                • -Kelly-

Scowling as she saw Aria’s contempt, Kelly swallowed hard. Don’t give her any reason to look down at you. Remember, don’t show anything. She sighed. She opened her mouth to speak, but took the words back. Just make the guess, don’t ask. She glanced at Lumen, and trying not to let her voice crack, she said, “Red… Four.”

                • Merlin-

Merlin looked over at Kelly, “Yes, I see how that could follow on.” He waited for the verdict, glad he didn’t have to make the guesses.

                • (Heya Silver 😛)

                  Kash-
Kash stood off to the side, watching as the others bickered. Why were they all so irritable? Given, he’d been angry at Mar, but … He sat, watching, ready to make a guess in case that one was wrong.

                • Results:
“Close, very close,” murmured a red gnome with a number four, spinning around in a slow circle and wearing a very tired looking expression. “But not quite. The correct answer was Indigo 4.”

                  Jax-
“You’re welcome,” Jax replied to Aria with a cheeky grin. He was glad to see that she didn’t seem particularly discouraged, even if she didn’t appreciate his cheerfulness.

                • Aria –
Aria rolled her eyes and gave Jax a dirty look. Then she sighed. “Purple, three and indigo, four. I think I’ve got it.” She took a deep breath and crossed her fingers behind her back as she spoke to Lumen. “Blue, five.”

                • -Kelly-

Kelly looked over at Aria. That’s gotta be it. She thought. Please be it. She silently cursed her own mouth for being too slow.

(aka I’m too slow and not active enough to make comments first yay. 😛 )

                • (honestly i was just lucky i was on when this got modded. I usually reply to comments like three hours after they show up 😛 I bet you would have gotten it right anyway <33)

                • wowie i have totally been so active right now

                  -Bellatrix

Bellatrix stood silently, fidgeting with the coin necklace in her hands and waiting for Lumen’s response.

                • (ah but that would be too easy 😉 im also not certain that the actual pattern isn’t too hard 😛
                  Results:
A very sad looking gnome with a drooping hat and the number five. “Nope,” it murmured, pointing a little distance away. “It was blue nine.”

                • (whaaaaa blue 9 like yay even though we were completely wrong that’s good in my mind 😛 )

                  -Kelly-

“Okay, then…” Kelly frowned. “Perhaps… Green ten?” she guessed. She held her hands together tightly, hoping that she was right.

                • Aria –
Aria clenched her fists, frustration surging through her. Purple, 3; indigo, 4; blue, 9; and green, 64. What on earth could the pattern be? Guessing the colors was easy enough; there were only seven, but for the numbers… There were so many possibilities. “Okay, stop,” Aria said at last. “We only have twenty chances, remember? Before we guess any more, what are all the connections that 3, 4, 9, and 64 have?”

                • (uhhhh I could make them all into my lucky numbers 😉 )

                  -Kelly-

Kelly shrugged in defeat. “I have no clue. I thought we had it, then I thought I had it, but now it seems completely random.” We can’t fail this. She bent down, trying to think.

                • Merlin-

“Okay,” he spoke, “So the first two numbers are 3 and 4, and the second two numbers are 9 and 64. 9 is 3 squared and 64 is 4 cubed. I think this trial works with powers. What I’m not sure, is if the 5th number would be 3 to the power of 4 or if it would start again with the numbers 5 and 6. The colours part is easy enough, it goes back one each time. Does this make any sense?” He looked around the group, wondering if they’d come to the same conclusion.

(Am I seriously over complicating this? 😛 My maths teacher sets these kind of things when we do algebra and the answers are always really complicated, so I guess I’m used to finding a really long equation 😛)

                • -Kelly-

“That would make sense…” Kelly murmured. “But I’m not sure if we should start again with five or not. But we don’t have anything else, do we?”

                • (im going to get rid of the chance limit, i forgot i had that in there 😛 )
                  Jax-
“That does make some sense,” Jax said, trying to puzzle it over in his head. “The last three all have nice square roots. I’m afraid I’m a little out of practice with math.” Back when he still had his shop in Verum, he was better at things like this, but it have been awhile since he had thought about numbers.

                • Merlin-

“I’m not sure,” he shrugged, doubting himself, “Square roots were never my strong point in maths and if it is something to do with them then I won’t be much use.”

(Ack I hate square roots, never made much sense to me! 😛)

                • Aria –
Aria gave Merlin an approving nod and a small smile before narrowing her eyes, deep in thought. She’d always been rather good at math, but that had been in Verum, so she was out of practice. She tilted her head to one side and brushed a strand of hair out of her face. It was a while before she spoke again. “The next color is obviously yellow.” She bit her lip, wondering if she should guess. Then she shrugged. They had nothing to lose. Aria turned to Lumen, quickly running calculations through her head. “Yellow, 625.”

(I actually like square roots and powers. They’re kinda fun. But seriously flame? Math?? 😛 )

                • (im soryyyyyyy 😛 i tried to think of something else which is what the long delay was but I failed 😛 )

                  Results:
“Wrong!” called a gnome, sounding far off. “It was Yellow 3969.” Far along the cavern, the indicated gnome drifted upwards, tied to a balloon, and waved.

                  Jax:
“What?” he muttered, rubbing at his head. “I wish we had a piece of paper or something,” he added, rubbing at his chin. “Is 3969 square root-able?”

                • Kash-
Luckily, Kash had actually paid attention in math. “Three minus one is two. Two times two is four. Four minus one is three. Three times three is nine. Nine minus one is eight. Eight times eight is sixty-four. I think the pattern is the number minus one squared. Orange, 15625984?”

(Rip can someone else check that math 😛)

                • Merlin-

“Very smart.” he nodded at Kash, “Hopefully that means we’re done!” He stroked his scarf slowly, the fluffy material soft beneath his fingertips.

(Ah well done frosto!!!!!!! Oof I don’t even know what calculation to check 😛 powers and square roots are generally confusing and it’s the summer holidays so right now my brain in incapable of maths XD)

                • (Thanks!! I’ve never guessed a pattern before 😛 and I just did 3969 x 3969 on a calculator, but I might’ve typed something wrong 😛)

                  Kash-
Kash turned his gaze to the ground, embarrassed. “Th-thanks.”

  • “Congrats,” Lumen said, clapping his hands slowly. He snapped his fingers, then paused, looking at his hand. Frowning, he snapped again, his expression darkening when nothing happened. “PACIFICAE,” he shouted, looking extremely irritated, “Please get rid of these gnomes!” After a brief pause, the gnomes disappeared. Scowling, Lumen turned back to the watching people. “Just so you know, you currently have 3 faults.” He snapped his fingers again, looking pleased as 10 snakes fell from the ceiling at his bidding. “Have fun!” he said with a nasty smile, settling back against the wall as the snakes began to circle the contestants.

Okey, fight some snakes c: there are ten, so please indicate which snake you would like to attack.

    • -Kelly-

I’m absolutely useless at math… Kelly thought, ashamed of herself. But it didn’t matter now, there were snakes surrounding them, and all she wanted to do was scream and hide behind the nearest person. Instead, she grabbed her dagger tight and tried to stab the head of one of them.

      (Snake number 9 pleaseeeeeeeeeee)

    • Elyanna-
“Everyone stay back,” Elyanna didn’t expect her voice to sound so harsh. “I’ll handle this.” She took out her daggers, fully ready to kill the snakes. She turned back to glare at everyone. “That’s an order.”

As she was getting ready, she felt a hand brush her arm. It was Will. Elyanna expected him to protest, to try to pull her back, but instead he gave her a quiet nod of approval that told Elyanna everything she needed to know. As Will pulled away, she sunk her daggers into one of the snakes.

      (Snake number 5)

      • Results for Elyanna (s#5)
Her dagger left a decent sized scratch on the snake for for it darted away from her, trying it’s best to flee.

        Jax-
“I’m generally pretty bad at following orders,” Jax said cheerfully, hurling one of his knives at snake # 6. “Couldn’t let you have all the fun, after all.” If only he was better at following orders, he mused to himself, his life would have been much simpler. The snake dodged his knife, slithering up to him and biting him in the leg before slithering off again.

        • -Kelly-

Kelly stole a sideways glance at a girl shouting “orders” at her. “Oh, yeah, sure! We’ll just stand back and watch you die as you try to kill nine snakes!” She let out a small chuckle. “You sliced yours, I killed mine. You can’t do everything by yourself.” Someone has got to tell her before she gets killed. A lump formed in her throat. Like, for real killed. She whipped around and aimed for another snake’s head.

          (Snakey number 3)

          • Kash-
Kash didn’t do well following orders – not after all those years in Verum when he’d been told to sit by and ignore all the dying humans, elves, and hybrids. He raced forward, lunging for another snake.
            (Snake 3)

            • Aria –
Aria glared at Elyanna. “I haven’t followed orders all my life, and I’m certainly not about to start now,” she snapped, reaching for one of the daggers strapped to her back. She darted forward and swung the dagger in a small arc, aiming for snake #7.

            • Elyanna-
“I see you aren’t doing what I told.” Elyanna’s lips curled into a playful smile. “Oh well. Let’s have some fun, shall we?” She sunk her dagger into another snake. She glanced at Aria. “You’re not very nice, aren’t you?”
              (Number eight)

    • Merlin-

Merlin grinned and grabbed an arrow from his sheath. He prepared in onto his bow, aimed it at the snake and fired. Are the snakes able to do any damage? he wondered. Well he sure hoped not!

      (Snake number 1!)

  • Alrighty, giving up on the notebook and rewriting all the fighting algorithm stuff 😛 hopefully this isn’t too different from what I had before :[

    Results for Kelly:
Kelly moved a second too late to strike the speedy snake, which bit into her arm before speeding away.

    Results for Kash:
The snake let out a loud hiss, startling Kash and causing him to miss. The snake then tried to strike back, but also missed because it noticed a butterfly on the ceiling.

    Results for Aria:
The snake darted out of the way of Aria’s weapon, and nipped at her leg on it’s way to safety.

    Results for Elyanna:
She sliced off the tip of the snake’s tail before it darted away, hissing in pain.

    • (No I did not forget about this)

“No I’m not,” Aria agreed, starting as the snake nipped her leg. She leaned down to rub the spot, relieved too see it wasn’t bleeding too heavily. She scanned the ground until she located the same snake and followed it, attempting to stab it in the head.

  • Hello everyone,

As you’ve probably gathered by the fact that this has become fairly inactive, I’m struggling to find the time and motivation to work on this. With school starting up I’ve been a lot busier, and that’s only going to get worse once the school year gets out of the review stage. So, I think I’m going to call it quits now. It’s been great playing along with all of you, and I want to thank you for making my first try running a roleplay a fun experience.

    • Ah sorry I only just saw this!!! 😛

Thank you for running this, it was awesome! 😀❤️

  • OKAY SO
Everyone knows we need people to write/edit the Rising Paws chapters, right? And I was originally just letting whoever sign up to do that, but I realized it was going to be too chaotic because there will be lots of apprentices saying they can write/edit chapters! So I am going to host a little writing contest for whoever wants to write/edit so we can size down the list more. (Now, if you are not chosen to write/edit any chapters then I don’t want anyone to feel bad about themselves because that’s not what it’s about and all of you have some amazing talents).

I’ll be advertising on the blogclan pages about it and any of you are welcome to copy and paste my comments and let members of the apprentice army know!! But you are not required to do that, it’s just something you can do if you would like to help out.
I won’t be posting anything today though because It’s actually pretty late for me here and I’ll be going to bed soon— but I will definitely figure out something tomorrow.

      • Blossompaw(rose)~Running for Senior Warrior! Bloss doesn’t understand Valentines Day but still wants chocolate nonetheless says:

        Here’s my little writing thing:

Blossompaw walked around the unfinished camp. Looking around it was clear work needed to be done.
“Stormpaw! Can I take out a hunting party?” Blossompaw called.
“Of course. Take whoever you want with you,”
Blossompaw looked around the camp, “Bloompaw? Will you come with me? I’m going on a hunt.”
        “Yeah! Sounds fun!” She replied.
“I’ll just take out Bloompaw. The camp needs some work.” Blossompaw said.
“Okay that sounds good,” Stormpaw answered.
        “Come on Bloompaw! Let’s go!”
        “Coming!” She answered.
Bloompaw and Blossompaw walked out of the camp.
“So,” said Bloompaw, “Random question for you,”
        “Go ahead,” Blossompaw answered.
“What do you think your warrior name will be?”
“Well, I’ve had it planned out sort of, I think it will be Blossomrose. What about you?”
“Mine is going to be Bloo—!”
“Shhhhhhhh,“ Blossompaw stopped Bloompaw before she could finish, “I smell mouse.”
Bloompaw and Blossompaw had practiced hunting together in camp against some leaves.
“You get the mouse out of its hole and I’ll grab it and catch it, okay?”
        “Got it!” Bloompaw whispered.
Slowly stalking the place where she smelled the mouse, Bloompaw advanced. Then, she pounced just next to it so as to dictate where it would go. Blossompaw was standing in just the right place to catch it. She was right in front of it as it ran to her paws, when she promptly slammed down and swiftly bit its neck.
“Nice catch!” Bloompaw bounded up to her.
“Thanks! But it was both our catch! We should probably go back to camp now because the camp needs some cleaning up.” Blossompaw shook out her pelt.
“Makes sense. Do you want to carry the mouse?”
“You do it. You were the reason we got the mouse.”
“Okay,” Bloompaw picked up the mouse. The pair bounded back towards the camp, happy they could help feed their friends.

        I hope you like it

      Writing example:
Rabbitpaw padded through the snow. It was cold on her her paws, but she had to deal with it was to help her clan.
She spotted a small, scrawny mouse scampering through the snow, most likely trying to get food for this cold leaf-bare. She crouched down and her belly brushed the snow. She shivered, which made the mouse look up from it’s current spot. “Fox-dung!” She hissed under her breath.
The mouse skeeted away, and scared most of the other prey off, too. “Ugh! Dumb mouse!” She brushed the snow with her paw, she felt like quitting, but she couldn’t. Her assignment was to catch at least three mice, so here she was, hunting for her clan. She bounced off into the snow, ready to catch every mouse she finds.

      Like it? 😀

    • here’s an example of my writing. Taken from a novel i’m writing. (link in my name)
Hurricane leaped up to the Sky glider platform. He was bubly with excitement. Surveying the land, he made a quick plan on how he would get there and back. Taking a deep breath, he leaped from the platform. He spread his wings, and felt the wind lift him. But it didn’t lift him very high. Hurricane was flying only inches off the ground. Remembering what other wolves did, he flapped his wings. But he just flopped around uselessly, until he finally skidded to a stop on the cold dirt floor. The pack was silent. Then Blizzard spoke up. “Hurricane has failed the Sky glider test!” he announced. There was another stunned silence. Embarrassment flushed his cheeks. But there was still one more test. The one that really mattered. The Storm bringer test.

    • Pushing past his newfound nervousness and embarrassment, Hurricane leaped onto the Storm bringer platform. Hurricane had already decided how he would knock over the log. He would summon a wave, like he had in his dream. Hurricane stared at the still water, unsure of what to do. Then he remembered the pull in his gut from the dream. He remembered how he had followed it, and lifted the water. But the pull was not there this time. Instead, there was an empty feeling of dread. But Hurricane pushed past it, and concentrated on the water. In his head, he imagined big waves crashing across the pond. He stared at the pond, waiting for something, anything, to happen. But nothing ever did. Pushing back tears, he tried a different strategy. Fire. He remembered how Flame had used fire to crack the log in half. Concentrating on the log, Hurricane tried to summon a spark of fire.
For a moment, nothing happened. Then… more nothing. His packmates started muttering. Come on, he urged himself to summon something. Anything. But no matter how hard he tried, he could never summon a storm. Tears rolled down his cheeks as he tried every possible storm he could think of. But he was never able to even summon a raindrop. He let out a sob. He had waited his entire life for this day. He had waited so long, just to find out that he was a failure. No matter how hard he tried, nothing ever happened. He had been standing there for at least an hour, and his packmates were starting to get annoyed. “He can’t summon anything!” called one voice. “Yeah,” joined in another one. “The earth would never give any power to a traitor!” The words hit Hurricane like a blow. He stumbled backwards, tears streaming down his face. Blizzard spoke up “Hurricane, son of Rain and Hawk, has failed the Trial of storms! Therefore, he is exiled from the pack!”
