(OG Tests ficlet – part one – Yedda’s Return To Limbo)

(If you don’t didn’t pay attention, basically I bent the rules a bit and kinda killed Yedda, had her make a deal with Limbo leader, and return to the Tests)
(HOWEVER, she canonically dies in a month bc that’s how long she was given)
(so yeah)

She had forgotten.

Everyone had finally gotten the happiness they’d deserve. Quintessa and her had even started raising a kit together. Why did it have to end so soon?

Yedda felt her powers slowly ebb away throughout the day. She had never felt so… empty. Bland. Quintessa looked at her with worry when, during their midday meal and grooming session, she had fallen asleep.

“What’s wrong? Are you okay?” Her voice sounded like a mother’s, calm but with undertones of fret. She licked Yedda’s cheek.

Yedda shook her sleepiness away. “I’m -“ there was a pause as she yawned “- fine. No need to worry,” she mewed sleepily. Where was this drowsiness coming from? Only she knew, and only she wished she didn’t.

Quintessa’s ear twitched. Dune was calling her over, presumably wanting to talk to her. “I’ve got to go,” she said to Yedda. She paused a bit, unsure if she should leave, and then did leave, mostly because Dune’s voice sounded… not very Dune-ish. Kinda high pitched and embarrassed.

Yedda felt sleep call her, but stopped herself. She couldn’t, wouldn’t, shouldn’t. It would mean giving up, it would mean failing. She refused to give in, and started singing to clear her head.

“And all those things I didn’t say, wrecking balls inside my brain, I will sing them loud tonight, can you hear my voice this -“ She broke into a coughing fit. She hadn’t been able to sing well in over a week. Hadn’t been able to sing a whole verse without coughing.

She sighed, and ate more of her fish.

It was late. Too late.

She was barely clinging to the shred of life she had left. She was laying next to Quintessa, who was snoring soundly. Yedda was trying to control her cough.

Images of the world she had visited flashed past her. A wispy figure of what vaguely resembled a cat whispered to her. Come home, It whispered. Come home.

No. Her body suddenly jerked and she retched on the floor, sick to her stomach. Quintessa woke, startled and frightened. “Yedda, Yedda, what’s wrong?!” She crouched near her dear friend. “I knew you weren’t okay! Yedda, speak to me, YEDDA!” She voice took on a horrible screeching sound. “YEDDA, PLEASE!”

Yedda was done throwing up, but she lay still, groaning, body hot. Too hot. She lifted her head to Quintessa, smiling weakly. “I’m sorry, I- “ – she coughed again – “ – I didn’t tell you. You killed me.”

After seeing the fright in her friend’s eyes, she hastily added, “No, before. When we were fighting each other. I went to – this place. I saw my sister. But then I came back to – to you.”

Quintessa was sobbing now, crying into her dying friend’s shoulder. “Please, please don’t go, I need you. I love you.”

Yedda smiled sadly, an expression that didn’t quite fit on her face. “I love you too.”

Her friend started to choke out a song through her tears. “You are my sunshine, my only sunshine…”

Yedda joined. “You make me happy, when sky’s are gray,”

“You’ll never know, dear, how much I love you,”

But only Quintessa sang the last verse. “Please don’t take my sunshine away.”
