Newlight, an indigo she cat with pale golden stars in her pelt, and pale golden light shining at her paws with bright golden eyes.

Hello? My glorious clan?
Holidaystar: Will all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather beneath the tall-rock for a clan meeting?
Jaggedkit: What’s going on?
Candycorntail: Hush, little one.
Holidaystar: Jaggedkit, step forwards. Do you promise to follow the warrior code, to protect and hunt for your clanmates, no matter the cost?
Jaggedkit: I do.
Holidaystar: Then until you receive your warrior name, you will be Jaggedpaw. Your mentor is Featherdusk.
Jaggedpaw: Wow! Thanks, Holidaystar!
Featherdusk: Come on, little sister.
Jaggedpaw: Are you going to teach me to catch squirrels?
Featherdusk: Yes, little one. And I’m going to teach you how to fly.

Chapter Two:
Christmaspaw grumbled as Eggfall fussed over her paw. “How did this even happen?” The medicine cat asked. Like I’m gonna tell you, Christmaspaw thought. If anycat knew I let myself be scratched up by a squirrel, I’d never hear the end of it! She stared at Eggfall, letting her know with a flick of her tail that she wasn’t going to answer. Eggfall sighed and went back to tending the paw. Meanwhile, Spookbreeze approached Holidaystar’s den, where the leader was talking with Wrappingwhisker.
“. . .should be more careful,” Wrappingwhisker was scoffing. Holidaystar shushed her mate as Spookbreeze walked in, head hung low.
“I’m sorry I let your apprentice get injured,” he apologized.
“It’s not your fault,” Holidaystar assured him. “Anycat could’ve made the same mistake.”
“Anycat would’ve watched where they were walking,” Wrappingwhisker muttered. “This is no one’s fault but her own.” Spookbreeze gasped, whirling on the deputy.
“No! I was the only cat on that patrol who wasn’t an apprentice or didn’t have an apprentice to look after! I should’ve kept a better eye on Christmaspaw,” he protested.
“Don’t blame yourself, Spookbreeze, it’s no cat’s fault,” Holidaystar said soothingly. “Why don’t you go help Featherdusk train Jaggedpaw? I think they need someone to come with them to hunt.”
“Alright,” Spookbreeze conceded, padding out the entrance. He paused. “Thank you, Holidaystar.” He left before she could answer. Holidaystar glared at Wrappingwhisker before stepping out after Spookbreeze. Wrappingwhisker shook his head and walked out as well, heading for the elder’s den to speak with his mother, Candycorntail. The elder she-cat looked up as he entered.
“Hello, Wrappingwhisker,” she greeted, swishing her orange, yellow, and white striped tail.
“What do you think about Christmaspaw’s accident?” He asked bluntly.
“Oh, I don’t blame anyone,” Candycorntail said smoothly. “No cat’s fault.”
“That’s what everyone keeps saying,” Wrappingwhisker sighed. Candycorntail stood and placed her tail on his shoulder.
“Let me tell you why.”
Outside, Jaggedpaw, Featherdusk, and Spookbreeze practise battle moves before heading out to hunt. Ribbontail instructs Cupidpaw and Balloonpaw on how to catch a bird while Newlight watches. But the apprentices can hardly pay attention. They’re talking about the hunting party where Christmaspaw was injured. Everyone was talking about it, or at least thinking about it.
“You should’ve stuck with her,” Cupidpaw was saying to Balloonpaw.
“I know, I’m sorry,” Balloonpaw sighs. “I wasn’t thinking.”
“It’s not your fault,” Ribbontail tells him. “Cupidpaw, pay attention. Let’s try a back-blow-twist combination this time.” They continue training, but Cupidpaw seems a little distant from her littermate.
Holidaystar lounges on the tall-rock, watching and listening to the clan’s conversations. The sun is warm on her pelt, and suddenly she feels very tired. Wrappingwhisker is saying something about a patrol, but Holidaystar tunes him out, trusting him to do what he thinks should be done. With the sun on her back and warm stone under her, she drifts off to sleep.

Holidaystar – I don’t know, but it’s kind of how I felt before I had Featherdusk, and Jaggedpaw. Could I be pregnant with a third litter?
Wrappinwhisker – Christmaspaw is fine, I guess. But Holidaystar could be sick. . .
Eggfall – Holidaystar will be fine, as will Christmaspaw.
Featherdusk – I caught a juicy rabbit. It will feed all the apprentices easily! I’m proud of Jaggedpaw’s catch too.
Jaggedpaw – I caught a crow! A big one too! I leapt right on it as it was flying away! I’m giving it to the elders, they’ll love it!
