Stormcloud was new in ThunderClan. Sure, he’d trained with Squirrelflight for six moons. But still. He knew practically no one here, and he missed Benny and his housefolk. Well, maybe not his housefolk. But whenever he slept, he saw the tattered image of his poor, lovely brother.
Cherryfall, a nice she-cat in the Clan, had offered him to talk to her, but Stormcloud was way to shy for that. She made him feel uncomfortable, and he didn’t want to look weak in front of her.
“Stormcloud!” called Brackenfur. “You’re in a border patrol with us.”
“Who’s us?”
“Me, Mousewhisker, and Cherryfall,” Brackenfur answered.
“Oh! Okay.” It was conflicting. He didn’t like being with Cherryfall, since it seemed to make him all clumsy, but he liked it. She was always kind and warm towards him, and she was his friend.
“Sparkkit!” snapped a voice. Squirrelflight was holding her ginger kit in her jaws, looking furious. “I told you not to dig in the moss!”
Sparkkit shrugged.
Tearing his eyes away, Stormcloud faced Brackenfur. “Okay, let’s go.”
Cherryfall and Mousewhisker were waiting by the camp entrance, talking. “No, I don’t think so,” Cherryfall was saying. “There are no WindClan scents.”
“I swear…” Mousewhisker started to protest.
“What are you arguing about?” asked Brackenfur.
Cherryfall rolled her eyes. “Mousewhisker is saying he scented WindClan inside our borders,” she meowed sarcastically. “He’s saying he’s sure Breezepelt crossed it, blah blah blah.”
“I can’t help suspecting him. Yuck.” Mousewhisker shrugged. “Let’s go them. We’re going towards the WindClan border?”
“Yes.”
“Then we can check it then,” Cherryfall interrupted. She rolled her eyes at Stormcloud, and he blinked awkwardly.

Cherryfall didn’t know what to do.
“Stay off our land!” spat Heathertail.
“I…” It was a mistake! she wanted to yell out. It was. She’d crossed the border by mistake, while marking it, and now those WindClan cats, at the perfect timing, were hissing at her.
“Cherryfall?” asked a voice.
In relief, the ginger she-cat turned to see Stormcloud racing towards her. He stopped abruptly when he saw the WindClan patrol. “What’s going on here?” he asked slowly, his voice slightly quivering.
“She crossed our border,” explained Harespring.
“It was a mistake!” Cherryfall exclaimed. “You believe me, don’t you?” She looked desperately at Stormcloud.
“Of course I do,” Stormcloud answered, a reddish tint in his cheeks. “We’re really sorry. It won’t happen again.”
“No, it won’t,” spat Breezepelt maliciously. “Don’t you dare try to cross it once more.”
Cherryfall thrust back her head. “I won’t want to,” she snarled. She could practically feel hot embarrassment under her pelt. She glanced at Stormcloud, and looked away again.
“Are you okay?” Stormcloud asked worriedly.
Cherryfall turned her head to meet Stormcloud’s eyes, and she felt her heart miss a beat. “Oh… I’m fine,” she murmured, looking down at her paws.
She stumbled slightly, and Stormcloud quickly moved to block her fall.
“Thanks,” murmured Cherryfall. Their flanks brushed, and she felt a strange sizzle going up her spine.
