Ok, so you guys probably guessed the content by the title already. I know, I know, this is a spicy meatball to swallow for some of you. Those of you who read my previous article probably know I hate many cats, Dovewing is one of them. Flickerbreeze is here to tell you why. SPOILER ALERT: OOTS, AVoS, Tigerheart’s Shadow, TBC.
Dovepaw is a ThunderClan apprentice and because of her powers, she gets chosen to go on the patrol to fight beavers who are blocking the river. Her sister, Ivypaw, becomes jealous that she’s getting special treatment. When she comes back, Dovepaw keeps getting traumatizing flashbacks about the fight with beavers. She keeps thinking about the other cats who went on the journey and her stupid brain decides to go to WindClan to pay a “Visit to my friends”, having heard with her powers that Sedgecreek was injured by a dog. That lands her and Ivypaw (who got practically dragged into this) into massive trouble. Like, WHY DO YOU THINK SNEAKING ONTO ENEMY TERRITORY JUST TO VISIT AN ENEMY WARRIOR IN THE CAMP IS A GOOD IDEA???
In Night Whispers, she starts meeting Tigerheart, which is disloyal already. She doesn’t listen to her sister, who tries to stop it and hates her for it (for a while). Then, Ivypool confronts the two of them and gets held hostage at the ShadowClan Camp. Dovepaw’s like “Um, yeah, she’ll be ok. Tigerheart’s with her”. Yeah and I suppose the rest of the Clan and their hostility don’t exist? She doesn’t even lift a paw to help her sister out, only telling the Clan she was kept hostage in ShadowClan.
She stops meeting Tigerheart for a while, becomes more-than-friends with Bumblestripe, then acts very meanly towards him and starts meeting Tigerheart again. Ugh…
In Tigerheart’s shadow, she gets pregnant (NO, NO, NO). She wants Tigerheart to accompany her on this absurd journey to a random place (church) based on her dreams. Um excuse-me, but your mate is a DEPUTY. He can’t just leave his Clan on a whim. Plus, she COMPLAINS that Ivypool isn’t speaking to her. Well, duh! You’re breaking the rules. I wouldn’t be surprised if no one wanted to talk to you. You might say. She’s not complaining. The literal word used in the book is “complained” or smth like that. She has no right to that. She’s being a whiny brat. So she has her kits and goes back to ThunderClan and expects ThunderClan to shower her with welcome even after she said she would go off to ShadowClan. She is astonished to see them hostile towards her. That proves she’s ignorant and spoiled. Finally in the broken code, when Bristlefrost, her niece, dies, Ivypool is broken-hearted and Dovewing doesn’t even make a move to go comfort her sister even after having made sure her son is safe.
Anyways, this is why I hate Dovewing so much. See you in the next article!!!
Great article, but I largely disagree.
1. This was Dovewing visiting in peace to see Sedgewhisker, who she had just traveled on a long journey with, developing camaraderie. She wasn’t confined by the lines of simplifying all cats to either ‘ally’ or ‘enemy’, a trait that defined some of the greatest cats in the books, I.E. Firestar.
2. Dovewing chose love over the rules of the Clans. She wasn’t doing anything morally disloyal- she was breaking a rule that was later changed anyway. I don’t see much wrong with this.
3. Dovewing really couldn’t have done much. She was a young cat, and all she knew was that her sister was in the care of someone she cared about, surrounded by cats who wouldn’t hurt her. There was no reason for her to defy her Clan in this case.
4. Dovewing didn’t really act ‘meanly’ to Bumblestripe. He was trying to push her into a relationship she didn’t really want to be in, and she rejected him.
5. Dovewing asked Tigerheart to ignore the Clans who completely opposed of their relationship and raise his kits. Asking someone to give up a power position to be with their family isn’t too unreasonable an ask, although it’s understandable that Tigerheart hesitated when confronted with this. It’s also understandable that Dovewing would be upset that her own sister was blocking communication with her. She isn’t being a whiny brat; she’s a cat in a very difficult situation dealing with complicated relationships. She has a right to be confused and upset.
