Stormberry glanced at Fallowstrike before meowing “I-I just wanted to say that I’m…I’m sorry. For…killing your clanmates. I-I was a different cat then. I just want to say that I have…changed.”
Slateberry-
Slateberry gently pressed the lavender and mint over Firekit’s fur, the pleasant smell of fresh herbs masking the growing scent of death.
“There, that’s better,” they murmured, giving the kit’s motionless head a little pat. “Before we burry Firekit, I’m going to go talk to Thrushstar. I don’t think he knows yet.”
“Hey, Thrushstar?” they called, sticking their head in the leader’s den, “One of Flamebreeze’s kits, Firekit, passed away. Are we holding a vigil before we burry her?”
To Thrushstar, this was new news. In WindClan, he was always alerted at a new death early on so he could prepare a vigil, but now, he was the last cat in the Clan to know…
Did the other cats trust him?
He shook the thought away. “Yes, of course. I’ll come out of the den and have a chat to the medicine cats.”
Slateberry-
“Thanks,” Slateberry replied, dipping their head. “Good luck with those med cats, they’re in a real touchy mood.”
They turned to leave, but hesitated, a thought hitting them.
“Also, I know you’re busy bein’ leader and all, but we’re pretty much the only old folks left in the clan these days. If you ever get a free moment, would you be up for going on a walk together or something? I get tired of talking to young’uns.”
Thrushstar nodded, silently agreeing with Slateberry.
“Of course. Let me deal with this vigil first, then we can go on a walk.

Midnightsong made her way to Thrushstar’s den, peeking inside. “Thrushstar?” she asked, padding inside when she saw him there. “I’ve come to talk to you about the loss of Firekit—I think Slateberry’s already told you about that?” Without waiting for an answer, she hurried on. “Firekit died because of that dry raspberry patch near the nursery. The…the thorns killed her.” She hung her head before continuing. “Maybe we could try and remove it? The other kits could fall in and…” ‘And die too.’ She finished the sentence silently. She let her voice drift off, hoping that Thrushstar had also silently finished the sentence. “So I really do think that we should try and remove it before…that happens.”
Slateberry-
“Huh, I didn’t know raspberry bushes were so dangerous to kits,” Slateberry said. “I guess she stumbled into it and was too little to get out…..”
The image that put in their mind made their stomach churn, and they twitched their pelt as if shaking off thorns.
“We should also remind the queens to keep a closer eye on the kits,” Slateberry said, frowning, “Firekit’s death could have been prevented if Flameblaze had been watching her.”
“Are you judging the way that I take care of my Kits?!” Flameblaze hissed loudly, “don’t tell me how to do my job!”
Slateberry-
Startled, Slateberry swiveled around to look at the queen. “Great Starclan, I swear the cats in this clan have the hearing of owls,” they muttered, ears flattening.
Raising their voice, they replied to the queen, “Firekit died in a preventable accident. It’s not your fault specifically, but there should have been somebody should have been watching her. I’m not judging , just making a suggestion on how to avoid more tragedies.”
Midnightsong surveyed the herb store, satisfied. As the year had gone on, lots of herbs had sprouted, and she had collected them without any hesitation. There had been plenty of catmint by the birch tree Whisper had found, so the store was flooding with it. “All right,” she announced, padding out of the medicine den with a bundle of mixed herbs hanging from her jaws. “Has anyone here been coughing? Or been feeling sore? Or been having an ache or pain somewhere in your body? Because I have enough herbs to treat you!” She set down the herbs, pawing them into separate piles as she waited for cats to come.

Willowpaw purred. She put the thyme and juniper berries on different piles – she hadn’t finished sorting them yesterday.
Dovewhisper called her daughter desperately: “Please, Willowpaw, I love you-“
Willowpaw heard the voice but she splashed deathberry juice where it was coming from.
Frustration iched on Dovewhisper’s paws. Apparently her daughter didn’t want her there…Alright.She walked out of the den.
Willowpaw tried to hide her relief. “Sorry!” She squeaked at the deathberry juice. “I’ll clean that!”
Midnightsong rolled her eyes. “Willowpaw, if you’ve any hope to become a medicine cat, you’ve got to stop making messes! And why did you throw the deathberry juice there anyway? We can’t afford to waste anything, even deathberry juice! Now hurry up and clean that up before some cat gets in on their paws.” She sniffed. ‘Apprentices,’ she thought.
“Willowpaw!” She looked at the apprentice. “You’ve got to stop spilling stuff. And deathberry juice! What are we going to do with you?”
Brightblossom was running. Fear pulsed through her veins. She had to run away from the Clan camp before more people got hurt. The badger lumbered behind her. “IF ANYONE HEARS THIS, I NEED HELP!” Brightblossom screeched, bristling. “BADGER!”

Flamepaw raced over to the pale yellow deputy. “I gotcha, Brightblossom!” Her blue eyes shone with fury at the badger. “Get lost, you dung-eating badger!” She snarled, landing a blow to the badger’s snout. Inside, she was ABSOLUTELY TERRIFIED, but she knew that she’d never forgive herself if she DIDN’T help Brightblossom.
“Thanks!” Brightblossom panted, but it was only a matter of time before she dodged yet another blow from the badger
Leafpad purred, “well, badger hunt! Fun!” She slashed her claws at the badger, and leaped onto its back. She sank her teeth into the badger’s back, and jumped onto a tree. “This is how my mother died, killed by a badger. I couldn’t help her then, but I’ll help my clanmates now!” She thought before leaping back into the battle.
Midnightsong heard the frantic yowls, and she pricked her ears and followed them to see three cats fighting a badger. Alarmed, she scrabbled around on the ground. “Don’t worry! I’ll, um, get help! And, uh, I’ll get herbs to heal any wounds!” she cried, her mind whirling and eyes wide. She dashed into camp and bursting through the entrance. “Help!” she yowled. “A badger is attacking some cats!” She was breathless, but she rushed into the herb store and grabbed some cobwebs and marigold along with some other herbs and rushed out to lead the way to the fight.
“Thanks!” Leafpad meows, the badger fleeing. “Go heap Brightblossom, she has the most injuries. I am alright.” She licked a scratch on her hind leg. “This is all.”

“Okay, but go back to camp and see if another medicine cat can help,”. Midnightsong instructed. She turned to Flamepaw. “And YOU, Flamepaw. That was completely mouse-brained! You should have run and gotten help, not jump straight into battle!” But there was a hint of amusement in her tone. She padded over to Brightblossom. “Okay, show me your wounds so I can help heal them. I’ll do as much as I can before we head back to camp.” She set down the bundle of herbs that were in her jaws.
“I-I’m sorry!” Flamepaw gushed, face burning. “I-I didn’t think. I really am sorry.” She smiled awkwardly. “Next time, I’ll remember to get the warriors first.”
“It’s fine,” Midnightsong sighed, regretting her harsh words to the apprentice. “You’re a young cat. I’m sure you meant well.” She looked fondly at her. “But keep what I said in mind—not the scolding part, I don’t think you’d want to here mini-me in your head chiding you every time you leap into battle,” she added, trying to throw in some humor. “Now,” she said, turning back to Brightblossom. “Do you have any wounds?”
“I- I don’t know,” Brightblossom said, flank dripping with blood, ” Just my flank, back and leg, I think.”
“I didn’t bring enough herbs for all that!” Midnightsong exclaimed. “We’ll have to get you back to camp.”
Brightblossom grunted “Well, let’s get back to camp”
“OH MY STARCLAN ARE YOU ALRIGHT?!” Emberpaw cried out, running over to the cats. “You smell of badger- no offense- I meant- Were you attacked by one?” He panted.
Flameblaze licked her lips, and found out with a start that she was hungry. “Whisper? can you ask someone to give me a mouse?” she asked the grey ghost, “sure,” they said. Whisper trotted out, “why do people keep thinking im real?” they murmured, “can somebody bring some freshkill to the queens?” the meowed, as Firekit (who just became a ghost) scurried around camp. she went into the medicine den. “Hi Midnightsong!,” the ghost she-kit said. and Whisper asked again, “can SOMEBODY give ANYTHING to the queens?”

“What?” Midnightsong jumped at the tiny voice that had talked to her. Looking down, she realized that it was Firekit’s ghost. “Oh, um, hello,” she mewed. “I’m glad to see that you’ve become a ghost.” ‘Though it would be better if she’s made it to StarClan,’ she added silently. Her ears pricked when she heard Whisper’s plea for help. “Excuse me for s second,” she told Firekit. She padded over to Whisper. “I can take that vole to the queens,” she offered.
Whisper nodded, “thank you,” he said.

“No problem!” Midnightsong told her. “I love helping. In fact, that’s part of the reason why I became a medicine cat! Besides, I should check on Hopekit.” She picked up the vole and padded over to the nursery, poking her head inside before making her way in. She dropped the vole down gently. “Whisper asked me to bring you some prey,” she explained. She then made her way over to Hopekit. “How are you today?” she asked gently. After the loss of Firekit, she was determined to make sure the other kits were safe and healthy.
“I’m good!” Hopekit bounced up and down, “I just had another nightmare though,” Hopekit said, remembering the cats that had chased her in her dream
“What?” Leafpad asked curiously.
(BTW, Leafpad needs an app after the mysterious disappearance of Vinepaw )
“Yeah, my nightmares. I get them a lot, so I should be used to it by now but I’m not ..” Hopekit said causally, fur fluffing up
“Hopekit!” Mudkit called, playfully pouncing on her, “Flameblaze said i can play with you now!”
“Okay, gimmie one moment!” Hopekit mewed excitedly
“Oh….”Leafpad sounded awe, and she dipped her head. “What are they about? Ghosts?” She leaned in close.

“Yeah,” Hopekit said, “And they are in the Dark Forest . . . a lot of the time,”
“Hi?” Leafpad poked her head into the medicine cat’s den. “I’ve come here to check on Brightblossom. How is she? Also, I’ve got a thorn in my pad. It’s really deep. Could you please get it out? Thanks!”

“I-I think Brightblossom’ll be okay,” Flamepaw’s quiet mew rang through the den. “I’m not a medicine cat, but I, uh, came to check on her.”

“Brightblossom is well,” Midnightsong replied. “Her wounds are healing nicely, and there’s no sign of infection. Now, how about you come over here so I could take out that thorn in your—oh, wait! Willowpaw could!” Lowering her voice, she added, “Willowpaw’s nearly ready to be a full medicine cat.” Raising her voice, she called to the apprentice. “Willowpaw! Could you get a thorn out of Leafpad’s pad?”
“Sure”, Willowpaw mewed. “Get me oak leaves, please?”
“Of course,” Midnightsong meowed, padding over to the herb store. After nosing around a bit, she pulled out a few oak leaves and nudged them towards Willowpaw. “There you are. Now let’s see you get rid of the thorn.”
She licked the area around the thorn, hoping to losen it.
“Willowpaw-“
“Shut…Up.” She murmured softly, then grasped the thorn with her teeth.
“Willowpaw…Please….Please listen to me!”Willowpaw let the thorn fall again. “Mouse-dung!” She hissed. “Shut. Up! Wicked ghost!” Once again, she loosened the thorn and grasped it, then finally pulled it. “Sorry for the wait, Leafpad”, she meowed. “Now let’s apply some oak leaves so there’s no infection.” She chewed the leaves into a poultice and applied them to the place the thorn had been. “Good”, she said as she put the cobwebs. “Come see us if it starts bleeding or hurts.”
Brightblossom looked up from her nest, “I’m alright. That badger got me, but I think I scared it off, and I’ll have a cool scar across my back, heh.” Brightblossom mewed, joking around
Midnightsong rolled her eyes and shook her head playfully. “That ‘cool scar’ needs time to actually BECOME a scar! Look at the nasty cut! Now come over here so I can treat it some more.”
Brightblossom hissed playfully, but still followed Midnightsong into the medicine den so she could treat Brightblossom.

Icydawn glanced behind her. Lilacmoon. Her biggest enemy. “Why are you here?”
“I just have to say I’m sorry,” she said, “too many clanmates are dying now. We need to work together,” Icydawn blinked in shock. Lilacmoon was being nice? “Give me a reason too,” Lilacmoon met hey icy (I’m so funny) gaze and laughed. “We only have eachother now. Wisty and Snowy are gone. It’s only us.”
Icydawn thought for a moment, but she recalled the past. Wisteria and Snowy playing with them both and having fun. When she actually liked her. Maybe that’s all Wisty and Snowy wanted. Icy smiled. “Aight, offer accepted,” Lilacmoon smiled, “BUT- you’re still my rival,” Lilacmoon let out a loud laugh.
“Bet,” It seemed as if the argument that stared moons ago finally had come to an end. Lilacmoon stealthily sneaked back though the trees as Icydawn sat on her rock.

Emberpaw stepped forward, taking a deep breath. “C-Can I go too?” He asked.
“Sure!” Said Leafpad
“Hi, Leafpad!” Flamepaw called as she raced over to her mentor. “Who are we going with?” She asked.
“Emberpaw, and I’ll wait for a while to see who else wants to join. One warrior handling 2 apps could be a disaster.” Leafpad’s whiskers twiched.
“Okay we’ll leave now.” Leafpad crossed the clearing. “Flamepaw, leave Fawndream and hurry up! You too, Emberpaw. I want to teach you 2 badger hunting.” Leafpad has thought long and hard about what to teach the young apps, but she made up her mind when she remembered Flamepaw’ lousy performance at the badger fight
“B-Badger hunting?!” Emberpaw gasped. “Isn’t it dangerous- Uh, sorry.” He flicked his ears in embarassment. “Ohstarclansomeoneteachmetogobackintime.”
Brightblossom limped out of the medicine cat’s den. “May I join you? My wounds are healing nicely.”
“Sure!” Leafpad purred
“But keep it simple. You are still limping.”
Brightblossom sighed “I suppose your right, I’ll just keep an eye out for prey, and maybe catch a thrush.”
As she looked up at the night sky she saw that it would be half-moon tomorrow night. She would just have to take Willowpaw alone. It wouldn’t be the same. Her first half-moon and no other clans to share with. She felt a pang as she thought of her old mentor and her own first half-moon.
“Hey, Fawndream?” Flamepaw mewed, padding up to the medicine cat. “Are you okay? You look kinda… Um. Well, you look really upset.”
“Don’t worry,” Midnightsong mewed gently. She knew that Fawndream was nervous about the trip to the Moonpool. “You’ll do fine. I’m sure Willowpaw will love it there.”
Small tail flicking side to side, Hopekit bounded across camp, and came barreling into the elders den. “Sorry!” She mewed, and raced out, happily skipping along.

“Yeah!” Hopekit squealed, “what do you wanna play?”
“What are you doing?” Flamepaw asked as she sat beside her mentor. “Not getting into trouble, I hope?”
“Nope! Just . . . looking for something,” Hopekit mewed, thinking of the story she was told
“What something?” Flamepaw asked cocking her head.

Fallbreeze padded out of the warriors den. “Does anyone wanna go hunting?” she asked shyly. Hopefully someone will hear me this time… she added silently.
Just so you guys know, Fallbreeze was often ignored in the camp because she’s very quiet but also has a kittypet and rogue heritage. (But that was her old Clan camp, so you can all be as nice or as mean to her as you want 🙂)
