I understand the controversy of AI-generated art and side with actual artists on this debate. Let’s say, though, that in some far off, future time—okay? This is entirely hypothetical and even fantastical, I suppose—robots reached a level of sentience. Let’s say one of these robots could then paint of its own accord. Would it receive backlash still? Would its ability to create be ridiculed by those who assume it’s still incapable of natural thought? I’d like to write a story on this now… a genuinely sentient AI who is almost destroyed for his love of art. The argument against him is that he initially learned from others, but he argues that even flesh and bone artists learn from and imitate others as well.

I love that concept! While I doubt this would happen, that is a really interesting thought… I would also say that everybody learns from somewhere, so an AI robot that gained sentience should arguably be allowed to make art – but he’s also a robot, so he was trained to perform better than humans. I can’t really decide if that means he would be somehow advantaged and what the moral implications of that would be… Your idea made me think quite a bit, thank you for that. Have fun writing your story!
I understood 10% of what you just said right there 😛 But yeah, A.I has been evolving in the past years and it would be cool to see a book specifically based on the subject of A.I and what it can achieve.

ive thought about this before too! as of currently, to our knowledge, ai can only mimic humans. however, if one somehow achieved the level of conciousness required to think for itself, at that point i think it would be considered a person like everyone else. the reason most artists dislike ai art is because it wasn’t created with any thought or meaning behind it; however, a sentient ai that creates an art piece based on its own feelings wouldn’t fit this description. this stuff is super interesting to think about! plus it could be useful in the far future if this hypothetical becomes a reality, heehee
Exactly. And see, how would we ever reach a future like that unless AI were allowed to develop and thrive now? Now, don’t get me wrong— I’m not arguing for AI-generated art; primarily for two reasons. 1. The research of AI sentience has nothing to do with generating thoughtless art. And 2. AI-generated art has been capitalized and monetized by people who have no true appreciation for both human-made art, and the betterment of AI itself. By doing what they’re doing, they are turning the mass opinion *against* AI in general, and we could possibly be depriving a future being the joy and freedom of creating his own art. These poor, currently mindless, machines, are being misused, and it’s not of their own fault. In this story I may well write, my little bot will decide not to SELL his art (in order to prove his point,) and he may create a new category of art in itself, proving he can be more than the image of man.
