Okay, gotta tell y’all about my favorite books!
Harry Potter – I don’t think it’s necessary to say anythink else, you know what it’s about.
Stalking Jack the Ripper series by Kerri Maniscalco – This is the first YA book I’ve read and I LOVED IT! It has great vibes, great mystery, great protagonists and don’t even get me started on the romance! (trigger warnings: death, autopsies, murders, some sexual content in the fourth book; wouldn’t recommend it for kits and apprentices under 13-14)
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak – Many of you have probably read this book, but if you haven’t, then I think you should. It’s one the most beautiful novels I’ve read, but also the saddest, filled with love for books and words.(trigger warnings: death, war; wouldn’t recommend it for kits)
The Raven Cycle series by Maggie Stiefvaner – This is a great YA series about friendship, magic, family and love. Promise that you’ll never find anything alike! (trigger warnings: character death, some violence; wouldn’t recommend it for kits and apprentices under 12)
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern – My favorite novel! It’s a story about people, about magic, love, time, destinies and stories, all around one circus that only opens at night. Astonishing! (trigger warnings: some mentions of death, but nothing explicit; it is considered an adult novel, but I think apprentices over 12-13 would also enjoy it, as long as they are ok with a book that doesn’t have very much action)
SIx of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo – You have probably heard of it and its great characters, its great plot, its great writing. The hype is real, I think it’s one of the literary masterpieces of our times. (trigger warnings: pretty graphic violence and some character deaths; wouldn’t recommend it for kits and apprentices under 13)
The Infernal Devices series by Cassandra Clare – This one is the best trilogy to read if you wanna start the Shadowhunters universe. It’s very emotional, with great characters, great romance, a book lover protagonist and a very interesting magic system. (trigger warnings: violence, captivity, character death; wouldn’t recommend it for kits and apprentices under 13)
These Violent Delights duology by Chloe Gong – A Romeo and Juliet retelling set in the 20’s Shanghai, with mystery, gangs, fabulous writing and, of course, love. (trigger warnings: blood, murder, violence; wouldn’t recomment it for kits and apprentices under 13)
That’s it! If you have read any of these, please tell me, I would love to discuss them! If you haven’t, I highly recommend all of them, but don’t forget to check the trigger warnings and the age ratings!
i LOVE six of crows
Yay! Who’s your favorite character?
Hmmm I’m trying to remember it’s been a while since I’ve read it but honestly I don’t think I was ever able to pick!! I adore Inej, Wylan and Kaz so theyre definitely up there and probably are my favourites I think!!!!I do love Nina, Jesper and Matthias as well though so it’s just nearly impossible to choose
I absolutely ADORE the Six of Crows!!!! I’m planning on reading the Raven Cycle soon!!!
Great. Hope you’ll love it!!
I’ve read the Raven Boys and Soc! Both are two of my favorites. I’ve also Harry Potter.
Ah, finally someone who read the Raven Cycle!
Favorite character?
I don’t think I have one… Like, they’re all so great, it’s impossible to choose. Maybe Blue? Idk
Reading Six of Crows right now, it’s really good! I’m halfway through 🙂
Yeah, reading Six of Crows was such a great experience!
Six of Crows is so good!!
I have to reccomend a book series for younger apprentices and kits. The Dreamkeepers Saga. I think it is kinda like KOTLC, but I never read it so… ‘_’
Ooh, it looks super cool!!!! 😀 I’ll try it out 🙂
i kind of should get back into reading, does anyone have any book recommendations that i would like
i generally prefer books that deal with more mature themes (not necessarily inappropriate, just themes that require some more thought!), have a more descriptive writing style, don’t have a lot of exposition, etc.. my favorite genres are probably psychological horror, thriller, whatever the heck fahrenheit 451 is, etc. and i’m generally not a fan of realistic fiction, fantasy (sorry), or anything specifically made for youth. i’ll also take non-fiction and poetry if you have any ideas for those!!
recently i’ve been on a classics kick (mostly bc of ap lit lol) but dorian gray was a good exploration of manipulation as well as themes of aestheticism and morality! and i think kafka’s metamorphosis is pretty deep with the psychological analysis of his transformation, though it’s been a bit since i read it. currently i’m reading crime and punishment, which is supposed to be similarly exploratory, but i’m not far in enough to tell you about it 😛
picture of dorian gray is great^^ you could also try the strange case of dr. jekyll and mr. hyde
Have you ever read 11/22/63 by Stephen King? It’s not horror- more thriller- but it is a fantastic book about a man who travels back in time to try to prevent the assassination of Kennedy. For you and anyone else reading this, it is pretty mature so I’d say only try it if you’re 16+. It does contain violence, mature/adult themes/content and also uses of slurs so please be aware of that!
I personally haven’t read it myself, but I’ve heard that The Time Machine by H.G. Wells is a good book to read if you enjoyed Fahrenheit 451 — both are dystopian and science fiction. Also, I agree with Birchy that The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde would be a good idea to read. Have you read poems/stories by Edgar Allen Poe? I think you would like his poems and stories.
The court of thorns and roses? Opinions
Map don’t come for me 😝
so sorry 😛
AWFUL book series (said as someone who read 3 books) also DISCLAIMER to anyone considering reading this book series is for an adult audience!!! it has a LOT of adult content in it /lh
but yeh it sucks its messy theres so much adult content that it just takes away from the actual story ough. Throne of Glass is the better sarah j maas series i dont generally like her stuff but throne of glass is MUCH better than acotar
Oops, I was going to check out that book 😛 I did not know that it had so much inappropriate content in it…
From what I remember the first book had a big amount of it but not horrifically much but second book onwards it was actually so much I hated reading it on the bus to and from school in case anyone looked over my shoulder. Also, generally just not great a book anyway there’s certainly better books you can check out. ACOTAR is talked about a lot but its really not that good
Alright, I definitely shouldn’t read it 😛 Thanks for the heads-up, Map!
Never read ACOTAR 😛 I was going to read it, but after Maple’s comment, I’m reconsidering 😛 😛 😛
Not a fan, Map pretty much hits the nail on the head with his explanation.
I read it some time ago and I hated it!! The characters are just not likable and the plot pacing is not very good either! The plot in general is not unique and engaging either. Yeah, and I agree with Map — there is a TON of adult content! The adult content is so excessive and just drags the story on. I read A Court of Thorns and Roses and the second book and after that, I stopped reading it since it was just so ugh.
I think I got to the third book of it before I stopped but honestly i dont know because the plot kind of sucked and blended together as well
I don’t think it’s a book you read for in-depth learning or a life-changing experience, but I think it’s a fun read when you’re bored and just looking to get invested!! Throne of Glass is definitely more impactful. I reread them all every so often just for funsies. I also like Crescent City, and found it to be one of my favorites of SJM once you get into it. I cried multiple times reading it.
They do have a lot of adult content, which imo takes away from the story.
SJM doesn’t have the best plots, but she does build really strong friendships and characters in her writing which I appreciate when just reading to escape c:
Has anyone read the Fourth Wing series??? I was considering reading it and was wondering if it’s good 😀 😀
Fourth wing is really good at the beginning but it does get a bit *cough* adult. Honestly the last chapters were ok if you want to see how it ends but a bit of a let down for me. I would say it is a pretty good book. Haven’t read the second. Also would not recommend for kits or the younger paws as it does have cursing, violence and adult stuff. It’s YA fantasy by the way.
I’ve read it, but I would definitely only go for it if you’re 16+ or particuarly comfortable with heavy romance as it does have some pretty adult content.
I get why people liked it, but it really wasn’t my thing. I wanted epic fantasy and dragons but I got silly romance instead 😛
A fun update from me today! I was in a second hand bookshop, and came across an old looking book with only the title and author on it but for some reason I was kind of drawn to pick it up
Turns out this book is a first hand account by Captain Jacques Cousteau who invented scuba gear. It’s written in 1953, before he even invented that, and recounts his work on ocean exploration!!!
The edition I’ve got was published in 1954, and it has some photos in it from the time period!!! It’s so cool, I’ve brought it to give my grandad on his birthday but it’s awesome that I found it. I was just drawn to this random book and it sort of felt like it was meant to be!
ohhh that sounds super cool, Map!! 1953 is quite a while ago :O
Literally!!! It’s so awesome and it was really exciting to find!!! There’s some really old pictures of sharks in there
That’s awesome!! I love finding cool stuff in second hand bookshops
Ooh, sometimes used book stores or local book sales have the best hidden gems!
1953?!?! :O oh wow, that sounds super cool 😀
That’s so interesting! My friend did a history project on him, so I recognize the name.
That sounds interesting! 😀
My sister’s boyfriend found a book in an antiques store dating back to around the time of World War 2 while my family were on a staycation, and the previous owner wrote some notes on the pages about their thoughts and experiences relating to the book’s contents (I think the book was about warplanes if I remember correctly), which is a really interesting look into that time period. 🙂
How long are y’alls to-read lists, if you keep one?
Mine is currently sitting at an entirely reasonable, definitely feasible 136 books 😛
It’s over 80 at this point 😭
Nonexistent haha, I really need some book tips :p
What kind o’ stuff do you like to read?
Anything that isn’t romance, really! My favourite genres are fantasy and dystopian, and I generally read books in the age range of 12 – 14
Not Flame but I’d suggest The Land Of Stories and/or The Giver if you haven’t read them!
Here’s a couple you might like!
The Search for WondLa by Tony DiTerlizzi
The Screaming Staircase by Jonathan Stroud
Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins
I actually own all of the WondLa books!! They’re some of my favourites, I’ve read the whole series three times, and even though I’m outgrowing it, i still love it so much <3
Nice, those are great books! It’s been a bit since I read them but I remember really liking them.
Pfft I’ve lost track 😛
Let me count! Gee, looks like it’s… 1 book long! (I can only think about one thing at a time =’) /lhj)
I don’t really keep a list, I just borrow books that I think look interesting at the moment!
24 books as of now!
At the moment, something more than 149 books 😛 (my library has a “For Later” list, and there are 149 books in it. However, there are some books I want that the library doesn’t have, and idk where to put them, so there is something more than 149 books I want)
officially 164 books. the actual number may be different
if you like history, charlie thorne is a really interesting series! i started reading it when i was like nine, so it’s perfectly safe for children, it has a tiny bit of violence, but since most of everyone here has read warriors, it’s not nearly on that level. it’s about a thirteen-year old girl who is a genius near einstein’s level who is looking for his last equation about neuclear energy. that’s just the first book though, the fourth book is coming out soon. each book is pretty long, but it’s a fun way to learn history. the same author wrote spy school, which i know some people read, so if you liked spy school (i did, finished the whole series, highly recommend) maybe consider giving charlie thorne a read! 😉
Ooh, that sounds really cool!!!! I’ll check it out 😀
Can u guys recommend me some books to add onto my reading list?
I am quite a mature reader and I don’t mind reading about blood and gore. Books I have enjoyed and read (AT THE AGE OF 11): Game of Thrones, Twilight Saga, Hunger Games, A School for Good and Evil. I am currently reading the Divergent Series.
Those are good reccomendations! Though I would say Twilight is 13+, if anyone is thinking about reading it 🙂
I agree. I was just giving examples of books I’ve read and I was hoping that u guys can give me some recommendations.
I read Twilight at 12, but ofc that’s just me being awkwardly mature and reading books that are not meant for a 12-year old 😛
The Inheritance Cycle sounds right up your street! The first one is called Eragon and it’s by Christopher Paolini. It’s about a boy who finds a dragon egg and is dragged into a rebellion against a tyrannical king, it’s good fun!
Thank u! I’ll check it out!
Marie Lu’s books are really good 😀 There’s Legend, which I would say is similar to the Hunger Games/Divergent, and the Young Elites, which is about a bunch of kids/teenagers that randomly start getting powers from a mysterious plague 😀 sounds like your classic kids fantasy novel, but it’s REALLY dark 😛 based on what you read, I think you’d really like them!!!!
The only reason I recognize the name is because she wrote Spirit Animals: The Evertree- it didn’t really seem all that dark tho lol 😛
Thank u so much! Both are added to my list!
Game of Thrones at 11?? I’m both impressed and mildly concerned 😛 if you’re looking for another long one, you could give The Way of Kings a shot!
The way of kings is amazing! It’s very slow paced so quite a commitment, but worth it!
Don’t worry, I am incredibly mature for my age. And yes, I’ll give it a shot!
I think you would like Skyhunter by Marie Lu! It also has a sequel, so check it out if you want 😀
Yes! I’ll check it out! I love books with a sequel or sequels!
Ive been trying to remember the name of this book for ages, tysm!!!
I’ve been reading this book series called The Horses of Half Moon Ranch by Jenny Oldfield, I rlly love it bc I love horses and it’s just very interesting. I’m on the second book, Rodeo Rocky, and its pretty cool! I would warn you though that they do say the D-word sometimes if you don’t like language. But overall I love it!
Ooh, sounds interesting!!!!
Cool 😀
Guys, did you know there’s this book that doesn’t use the letter ‘e’ at all? It’s called Roundabout, y’all should check it out 😛
(Other than the fact that the writer’s name includes ‘e’, ofc >:D)
Oh yeah I’ve heard of it 😛 I wonder how the author managed without past tenses that require -ed 😛
An entire novel without the letter ‘e’???? I have no idea how the author managed it (they would’ve never been able to use the word ‘the’-)
Or he
Or she
Or they
Or them
Or her ;-;
Oh my, I didn’t think of that. . .
Omg yeah I’ve gotten it recommended to me several times, it sounds cool :DD
Any recommendations for a wolf lover? I am not at all affected by any gore/violence/language, and love a animal’s POV.
If you haven’t read Foxcraft by Inabli Iserles then definitely do so! It features foxes and wolves.
The chronicles of ancient darkness by Michelle Paver also features a very cool wolf companion.
Wolves of the Beyond by Kathryn Lasky is entirely from the pov of wolves.
Song of the Summer King by Jess E Owen doesn’t have wolves as a pov (it has gryphons instead!) but they do feature very heavily. This one is probably my favourite out of these- I highly reccommend it!
What this comment says ⬆️ 😛
I just finished reading the testing by Joelle Charbonneau and it was sooo good! I haven’t read a book I liked so much since the last warriors 😛 I would recommend it to junior high students or maybe mature apprentices. it involves violence, killing, and romance, and it’s mainly a survival and action novel. there are 3 books in the series.
P.S. thanks for letting me know about this book Creamypaw! <3
Sounds cool!!!!!!!! I’ll check it out 😛
