Housekeeping Rules
- Include content warnings if necessary! This can be things like graphic violence, death, sexual content, etc. If you wouldn’t recommend it to a young kid without warning them what’s coming, then include content warnings!
- Try to keep non-book chatter out of this page! It can be redirected to the Tavern.
- Try to keep Warrior Cats chatter out of this page! We’re here to highlight books aside from the cats we know and love, so you can head over to the Sunning Patch or the Elder’s Den to discuss Warrior Cats!
- Fanfiction recommendations are allowed but fanfiction advertisements are not! This means that while you can recommend someone or your own fanfiction to other people, you cannot announce or remind people of a new chapter release on this page. You may do so on the Fan Fiction page.
I’ve actualy Re-read A Single Shard for the 4th (at least) time today. I first started reading in P4(10 yrs) when we were forced to read it. I really like it, and I still read it, even long after I was no longer forced to read. The author is Linda Sue Park, if anyone is interested!
edit: ooo page flip! my first comment here too!
After seeing the films/movies, I want to read the Dune series by Frank Herbert now. 😛
I’ve been meaning to read Dune for ages! I tried reading it when I was like ten but got bored and gave up, I think it may just have been too hard for me at the time so I want to give it a second chance 😛
Omg, same! I just started reading today!
Yeah the movies were so good!! I do want to read the books, but I have too many on my to read list XD
okay okay, me when I find this page and have a million recs:
YA/Few Content Warnings:
The Spoken Mage Series by Melanie Cellier — unconventional magic system, romance, friends, mystery!! worth finishing the series. not a ton of super deep stuff, but a very fun read!!
The Uglies by Scott Westerfeld — sci-fi, dystopian, good overall!!
Waterfire Saga by Jennifer Donnelly — this book owned me in middle school. I will never shut up about this series. mermaid, magic, action, mystery, found family, romance. if you don’t read this series you are missing out so hard. does discuss some heavier topics, not ur typical mermaid book!!
anything by pseudonymous bosch is also very good!!
other good rec for middle and high
raybearer by Jordan ifueko – cannot word how awesome this book is. amazing fantasy novel.
Only Read if in Highschool:
Book of the Ancestor by Mark Lawrence — gay magic ninja nuns sci-fi, love of my life. it’s about a girl who ends up at a convent and is trained to be a cool fighter!! totally changes the chosen one trope, gorgeous writing, gorgeous friendships. lots of fighting
The Poppy War by RF Kuang — this one has lots of content warnings for violence, smoking, not a happy ending. so violent. not kidding on the violence. it is so good, though, if you like all of the characters being morally grey and never knowing who will die.
Hell’s Library by AJ Hackwith — so so good. trilogy, slower pacing, really really interesting concept. it’s about a library in hell filled with unwritten stories, and the people that watch over them!
anything by Madeline Miller, will never shut up about her.
if you like song of achilles or circe, read Ariadne by Jennifer Saint.
for more recommendations please check out my Goodreads: goodreads.com/stormbird1904. I will be able to discuss any of the books on there, and many many more not on there.
I sent you a friend request! My user is Lily Night (Not my real name, just a general alias I use when a site asks for my “real name” etc)
friended ya!
Yayy Tysm!
I’ve been wanting to try Book of the Ancestor! The Poppy War too, but I’m worried it’ll be too much for me 😛
they’re both so good!! book of the ancestor is definitely way less dark than The Poppy War, and the characters are a lot more likeable at times imo. The Poppy War is one where you won’t know if it’ll be too much until it gets too much, haha. The first book is the least violent, and definitely worth giving a shot!! You can honestly read it as a stand alone and just pretend it ends there if you want, haha. If you can get through it okay, then just expect things you’d associate w/ like…war crimes…in the rest, to know how much it’d level up.
Can I follow you on Goodreads without you knowing I’m following you? Cause I use my real name on Goodreads and I’m friends with my two people from my real family that would give away who I am.
I’m honestly not sure!! Can you see my profile without following me?
Yes. I can see your profile without following you!
I am definitely not in High School, but I love Madeline Millers books!!!!! :d
they’re very good!! I placed them at HS level because of some of the content, but it’s definitely enjoyable for many!!
I just had to repeat “gay magic ninja nuns sci-fi.” This is a genre I have not previously encountered.
It is very good and the writing is beautiful. I highly recommend it, and others by Mark Lawrence. An almost Games of Thrones-esque style, but with a totally awesome magic system and world. It’s about a world where the earth has frozen over, and only a strip of land around the equator is green. All the people are fighting for control of the “moon” which could unfreeze the world, and some people have magic. The main character, Nona, has magic. Multiple morally grey characters and amazing concept in my opinion. One of the few fantasy series I’ve read recently that have felt as amazing to me the first time reading it as Harry Potter did.
You’ve got good tastes in books 😛 Raybearer, Book of the Ancestor, Poppy War, Madeline Miller are all excellent.
ty 😀
The Poppy War is an absolutely incredible book
All of these book recommendations sound great! Have you read Clytemnestra by Costanza Casati? I would highly recommend it if you liked Circe! 😀
Also, the Waterfire Saga is so good! I love it so much! It’s literally my favorite book series! This just reminded me that I should probably re-read it since its been a while since I read it! 😛
I have, yes!! it was very good 😀
ahh I’m glad you like it!!
I love you so much for this thanks for adding to my tbr <3
Ooo The Spoken Mage sounds so cool! I’ll check it out sometime :DD
I’m reading Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder and man, I’m thankful I did not grow up in that time period. But, the food sounds lovely. 😅 It’s not my favorite book. There’s also no plot. Each chapter is kind of it’s own stand alone story.
I think I just finished the first book of the second best book series ever (one being Warriors ofc ehehehe)
UNNATURALS: THE BATTLE BEGINS
Its such a good book and I highly recommend it! It’s a little violent, but not any more than Warriors! I already have an Unnaturals OC, but this isn’t quite the place to talk about that 😅
If you’ve read it! Lease tell me! I LOVE IT SO MUCH 🥰 ❤️
If you’ve read it, solve these riddles <:

I just love it so much! Eeeeeee!
I haven’t read it, but I’ve heard of it.
The first one is Castor I think, and he’s the main character?
IDK, I might check it out if a local library near me has it. For now, I’m stuck reading the sneak-peek 😛
Also while I search for it I still have to find one of the Spirit Animals Legends of the Great Beasts thingy 😛
Yeah, I’ve heard of it! I took it out from the library and never read it 😛 it sounded interesting, but I was busy finishing Warriors. I want to take it out again though! Fun fact: fairly sure the cover art and interior art is by Owen Richardson, the same artist for Warriors!
(Also the first riddle is the main character, the dog, but i forgot his name)
Does anyone have any sad or dark book suggestions? The only requirement is that it’s suitable for 12-14-year-olds and isn’t happy. I don’t mind violence, but very little or no mature content. Everything else, I don’t care. It can be a grim dystopian, it can be a sad realistic fiction, genre doesn’t matter, it can be anything as long as it’s not happy. Tysm <3
Maybe you could try ‘Once was a time’ by Leila Sales? It has a small amount of happy moments, and one at the end, but it made me pretty sad overall.
Or, you could try, ‘All the Light We cannot see’ by Anthony Doerr, I’ve never read it, but I heard it’s sad. I’m not sure what age range it’s for though, so can somebody look?
hmmm The Winter Pony by Iain Lawrence is a good tear jerker within that age range! It’s based on a real story about explorers trying to reach the south pole with a group of ponies. It’s beautifully written, and geared towards younger audiences, but remains one of the saddest books I’ve ever read 😛
Content warnings for violence, animal death, animal mistreatment, could definitely be an upsetting read so please tread carefully!
About anything by Marie Lu fits the description 😀 There’s also the Aurelian Cycle and the Grishaverse series, both of which I loved 🙂
One darker book that i read years ago and rediscovered is The Old Willis Place by Mary Downing Hahn! I don’t know what age group it’s supposed to be for, but i enjoyed rereading it and I’m in high school so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ another good one is the One of us is Lying series (it has a bit of romance but nothing too explicit, only a few kisses and it mentions more mature stuff but doesn’t show any of even go into too much detail iirc) i also loved We Were Liars by E. Lockhart, which is very sad but soo good
Salt to the Sea by Ruta Septys and The Words We Keep by Erin Stewart. The first is a historical fiction book about the worst maritime tragedy in history, about 6x worse than the Titanic.
The second is about mental health and it ends on more of a hope for a happy ending rather than a true happy ending.
Has anyone read the Daughter of Sparta???? I was just reading it right now and…. I have no words 😀
Random Recommendations!!
Some books like Warriors:
(Obvious to less obvious)
* means I’ve read it, without that it just means I’ve heard a summary of the series and suggest it!
Seekers*
Survivors*
Bravelands* (Targeted towards Kits apparently)
Bamboo Kingdom
Wings of Fire*
The Guardian Herd
Spirit Animals*
Foxcraft
Endling
Sword Quest (Followed by Swordbird and Sword Mountain)
White Fox (Oh wow, me and the author have something in common!)
Narnia Chronicles*
I’m pretty sure all of these are ok Apprentice and Older, with a few ok with Kits, pretty pretty sure (Ok, definitely The Narnia Chronicles, I heard those when I was only in Fourth Grade :P)
Also If you’ve heard one of these series, who’s your favorite character/s? I like Taqqiq, Sweet, Thorn, SnowFox, Rollan + Essix, and Edmund!
I’ve read ending! It’s really good 😃
I love Wings of Fire and Foxcraft!!!! My favourite WoF characters are Snowfall and Darkstalker 😀
omg you’ve read guardian herd!!! and foxcraft. you might like my book battle wolves. but its not written yet ^^. keep an eye out!
Endling and Foxcraft are great!
Oo I’ve read some of Spirit Animals (not all of it tho)
Rollan is awesome :DD I like Meilin as well!
Has anyone read The Summer I Turned Pretty??? I think it’s a good book, but idk.
Nurp, I’ll look into reading it tho!
I just started watching the show
I’ve noticed the blog has fair number of members who are aromantic, asexual, or related identities, so here are some book recs with notable aro and/or ace rep that I have read and gave at least 3 stars!
I’ve put age ranges but please, please also do a quick google of more specific content warnings, especially for the higher age ranges (only leaving them out because it makes the post very long very fast 😛 )

also, if anyone wants to see a similar list for any other identity (or genre/topic), let me know, I’ve read way too many books and I like throwing them at people 😛
I ADORE priory of the orange tree its incredible. I also really enjoyed loveless!!!
Priory of the orange tree is fantastic yeahh!!
It’s one of my favorites!
I didn’t like Loveless much (I could go on a whoooole tirade about it) but I appreciate the rep nevertheless! Thank you for these =D
You’ve intrigued me, now I kind of want to hear this tirade…
Having heard the tirade, I can vouch for its quality 😛
These sound great! I’d read all of them if it weren’t for the age ratings haha
Found out my library has two of the books in my age range! I’ll see if I can get them the next time at the library 😀
Ooh I hope you enjoy them!!
Loveless was a bit old for me when I tried it awhile back, but I appreciated the plot! Alice Oseman’s stories always have a place in my heart
For sure! I really appreciate Alice Oseman writing Loveless, it’s groundbreaking to have aro written by a popular author. I’m sorry to hear it was too old for you, hopefully it wasn’t too bad :[
I LOVE YOU FOR THIS. I just realized recently I’m ace and suddenly a lot of things make much more sense. I’ll definitely be looking into these!
Ayy welcome to the club! 😀 I hope you find some you like!
Ooh I’ll have to check out some of these! I’m aroaceflux and I love seeing ace representation in books <3
Yess I’m always so happy to find rep! I hope you enjoy them!
Thanks for the recommendations! 🙂 I’m Grey-Ace and I already have Loveless and am planning to read it soon (Same with Solitaire by the same author, which I believe has an Ace POV).
Any recommendations for books? I like dark fantasy stories, and would prefer if they did not have any icky stuff in it (I’m ok with Hunger games level tho). I also like sad animal stories ( A Street Dog Named Pup was reeeally good, I literally cried at one of the deaths😛) and am ok with violence. Oh, and I just realised some thing; I first read warrior cats when I was in really late 2th Grade!! Oof 😛
I really loved the Sunbearer Trials by Aiden Thomas! Also Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas as well both of those i LOVED. as for animal books ive unfortunately totally forgotten the names of the books im thinking of but ill try and find it sometime
Ty! Sounds cool
ooh I love Aiden Thomas’ books!
yesss aiden thomas books are SO good
The Sunbearer Trials is currently on my pile of half-finished books! I loved it though, and I have to finish it soon 😀
I would recommend the Grishaverse series, which consists of the main Shadow and Bone trilogy, the Six of Crows duology, and the King of Scars duology 😀 There’s also the Aurelian Cycle (Fireborne, Flamefall, Furysong), but it has a bit of icky stuff in it… And then there’s anything by Marie Lu, but again, pretty icky. Still wonderful novels, though
If your looking for animal stories, I’d recommend Foxcraft, it’s a really great trilogy about foxes, and Wolves of the Beyond 🙂 hope these help
Reading Six of Crows atm and have already read the Shadow and Bone series, and I’m popping in to say it’s VERY well-written and good!
Sounds cool! I think I’ll stay away from the Aurelian Cycle tho 😛
If you’re looking for dark fantasy then Cry of the Icemark sounds right up your street! It’s about a young girl who has to make deals with vampires and forest spirits in order to defend her kingdom against an invading empire. It has some epic battle scenes, but nothing gruesome/icky
I’ll check it out soon! (Oh, and by icky I didn’t mean gruesome stuff, I meant.. Thistleclaw stuff)
OMG YOU’RE USING MY DISPLAY NAME!!! TYSM 😀
Of course! 😃 It’s really good, ty for making it for me
Has anyone read the Gilded Wolves trilogy??? (The Gilded Wolves, The Silvered Serpent, The Bronzed Beast) I absolutely LOVE the series 😀 😀 😀 it stole my heart years ago and still hasn’t given it back 😀
It’s on my shelf waiting to be read 😛 I’ll try to get to it soon!
I’ve read the first two! I kind of lost interest though, too much romance drama and miscommunication 😛 still, I thought the plot was pretty interesting!
Does anybody have any nice long books for me to read? Ps. I’ve read Harry Potter and the order of the phonxie in about a day (and its almost 1000 pages long!)
I feel you, I read 1000 page books in a day, too 😛
If you want long, I can’t exactly think of anything longer than Keeper of the Lost Cities 😀 some of the books are longer than the Deadly Hallows
Ooh, I’ll look into it, I just looked it up I’ve read it before its realy good! But I’m looking for books I havn’t read before sorry 🙁
His Dark Materials (described on the previous page)
Lord of the RIngs
For HDM it donest seem like a book for me
As for LotR I’ll get it from the libary thank you
The Redwall series by Brian Jacques has a lot of books and they’re all pretty good fun!! And depending on how old you are, the Summoner series by Taran Matharu is very good too (though that does have some swearing/violence in it so be wary of that!)
The writers of Warriors chose the name “Erin Hunter” so their books would be on the shelves near Brian Jacques. They apparently thought that the books would appeal to the same readers.
Maybe the Twilight series? (It is mostly romance tho and has a bit of gruesome stuff so keep that in mind)
Edit: gasp speedy dodo
