Wrenkit looked at where Brightwing was pointing with her tail. There was a red bird on a tree. She heard Leaffeather whisper into her ear:”robin.” Wrenkit nodded. “Is it a robin?” She asked. “Well done.” Her mother nodded. “How about that one?” Snowkit glanced at it. “Starling?”
They kept on guessing names of animals and plants until they all grew tired. They lied down under a bush while eating a shrew. “Brightwing,what’s that bird?” Wrenkit pointed with her tail to a big black and white bird soaring over the camp.
Brightwing looked up. “Eagle! Kits,get inside the nursery,quick!” She picked up Snowkit by her scruff and shoved Wrenkit to get her moving. When they were about halfway to the nursery,the eagle dove and picked up Wrenkit with its talons. “Help!” Wrenkit screeched helplessly as the eagle carried her higher . . .higher until the camp looked as small as a small catipillar.
She saw Leafflutter racing towards her. He scratched the eagle’s wing. The eagle screeched in fury,and pecked at Leafflutter’s head. Leafflutter yowled and leapt onto the eagle’s back. He scratched at it until the eagle dropped her.
I’m too far off the ground,I’m going to die! Wrenkit twisted in the air. She felt branches scratching at her flanks. She landed on the forest floor with a loud thump. “Help!” She yowled in pain. Wrenkit felt Leafflutter beside her. “You are still in SparkClan territory. I will go get your medicine cat.” He licked Wrenkit’s shoulder,and then ran into the undergrowth. Wrenkit dozed off into an uneasy sleep.
She was in StarClan’s hunting grounds. StarClan cats gathered around her. “Am I dead?” The starry cats purred with amusement. “Not quite,” a voice meowed from behind her. Wrenkit turned and saw a soft-furred ginger tom with brown dapples and warm amber eyeswho she knew was an apprentice named Alderpaw. “Alderpaw!” Wrenkit bounded over to him. “I miss you so much,” she murmured. Alderpaw had been her best friend. He had died from redcough. He had died when Wrenkit was 2 moons old. “I miss you too,but remember,I’m always by your side.” Alderpaw nuzzled her. “Like Leafflutter, you have 2 lives..it is too early for you to die,which is why you have multiple lives,but it is too early for you to lose your first life too,so we can heal you enough for Otterfrost and Silver leaf to keep you on this life.”
“Is she alright?” Wrenkit heard her mother’s worried voice. “Yes she’ll be fine,” Otterfrost replied. Wrenkit opened her eyes. She was lying in a nest in the medicine cat den. Brightwing,,Otterfrost,Silverleaf,and Snowkit were talking nearby. “You’re awake!” Otterfrost exclaimed. “Tell me what happened.” Wrenkit shook herself,trying to remember”all I remember is that an eagle took me,and Leafflutter ca–”
“Leafflutter!” Brightwing and Snowkit stared at her,shock in their eyes. “Yes,Leafflutter,” Wrenkit mewed. “He saved my life . . .” Brightwing whispered.
“Continue,” Otterfrost meowed. “Leafflutter came and attacked the eagle,making it let go of me. A–alderpaw told me . . .” Wrenkit yawned. Otterfrost stroked her tail over Wrenkit’s spine. “Rest now.” Otterfrost gave Wrenkit some poppy seeds and put comfrey root beside her. He started rubbing a poultice of the roots while Wrenkit licked up the seeds. She yawned again and let sleep engulf her.
