  • Welcome to my book, Sunfall’s Climb

    Prologue
The ginger and white cat yawns as she gets out of her bed and stretches.
“Abbie!” Abbie perks her ears up looking for the source of the noise. “Abbie!” Suddenly Abbie bounds on to the couch and up onto the windowsill. Peering outside, she sees a large black and white tom. He waves her over with a flick of her tail. She nods quickly and jumps down in the direction of the kitchen.
“Roxie,” she meowed quietly. “Roxie, come over here.” She purrs as a small brown and white kitten, her sister, comes over. ” Gizmo is here. Come on” She bounds towards the door with Roxie at her heels. They approach into the sunshine and they stop to warm their fur. As the pad down the steps, Abbie can’t help but wonder what it would be like to live in the forest or at least the barn. “Don’t you just love green-leaf mornings?” The other two cats nod and purr in agreement.
“Is Gater coming?” Roxie wonders aloud.
“Yes, he is,” A black tom says as he comes around the corner of the house.
“Gater!!” Abbie barrels into the slightly larger tom.
“Abbie, give him some space,” Roxie laughs. Gater sequels in protest and eventually gets the golden cat to climb off. Roxie asks, “Where are we going today?”
“The forest,” Gizmo says calmly and begins walking off in the direction of the thunder-like sound. They continue walking until they reach a black path where they suddenly stop.
“What is this place?” Abbie and Roxie ask together.
“The thunderpath.” It is not Gizmo, but Gater, who answers.
“Cross when I say so, not before, not after. Got it?” Gizmo asks sternly. The kittens nod, realizing how dangerous this path is. “NOW!” The cats’ race across, to be barely missed by a giant thing.
“That is a monster,” Gater says to calm the two kittens down. “They are very dangerous so be careful around the thunderpath.” Roxie and Abbie nod as they start to calm down. When they look back at Gizmo, they realize he already started walking deeper into the forest and the three of them scurry to catch up.
A little while later they had seen so many new and different things, but Gizmo promised an even better thing lay deeper in the forest. They soon saw a big dip in the ground, surrounded by thorn bushes. They all crouched down on Gizmo’s signal, “That is the Thunderclan camp. It is full of wild cats who are very hostile, so be careful.” He led them around the side and into a bramble bush. From there, they could see kits playing, elders sleeping, and cats grooming.
“Wow!” she meowed in silent amazement. “These cats are hostile?”
“To outsiders, yes,” Gizmo hissed right before they were attacked by a dark gray she-cat. “Leave them alone!” Gizmo yowled as he pushed her off. “They’re only kits!”
“I’ve warned you many times though. You should know not to invade,” she hissed as she attacked them once again. They were struggling, but Abbie had full confidence Gizmo would win. Gizmo lurched in for another attack, nearly missing her neck, while the other cat landed a couple of scratches on his flank.
“Run!” Gizmo yowled as he was pinned by the other cat. Abbie looked around but the others had already scattered, at least she hoped. With one last glance at Gizmo and the Thunderclan cat fighting, she ran home and crossed the thunderpath, nearly being hit by a car. When she arrived in the clearing, she rested, her ears forward for any sign of her friends. Soon after Gizmo came padding into the clearing. Noticing that Abbie was alone, his ears shot up.
“Where are the others?!” He meowed sternly.
“I- I don’t know,” she whimpered. “When you told me to run I looked for the others but- but they were gone!”
“Calm down, I’ll find them.” He looked around before sprinting back in the direction of the forest.
A while later, Abbie didn’t know how long later, Gizmo came padding into the clearing with Gater shaking by his side.
“Where is Roxie?” Abbie shouted with alarm.
” I still have to get her,” Gizmo said locking eyes with Abbie to calm her down. Abbie gave a small nod, and Gizmo sprinted away. A long time later, Gizmo and Roxie came into the clearing. At the sight of Abbie, Roxie ran to the porch and nuzzled her.
“I was afraid you were dead,” Abbie purred and they walked into the house together.
“I never want to go to the forest ever again. That life is not for me.” Abbie and Roxie curled up in their beds and went to sleep.
    ____________________________________________________________________________

A small she-cat is stalking a mouse in the shadows. She is about to pounce when two Thuderclan warriors walk into the clearing and scare it away. The she-cat draws back into the shadows.
“Have you heard? There is a kittypet hunting in our territory!”
    “I know.”
” And it’s almost leaf-bare too. That kittypet has nerve.”
“Calm down Nightpelt. Maybe she has a reason.”
“I doubt it Cloudwhisker. There are mice and prey in the loner territory and I know kittypets hunt there.”
    “I guess”
The two cats continue on their way. The cat who was hunting peels away from the bush, deciding there are too many Thunderclan cats out today. As the she-cat pads out into the sun, it glints on her golden and white fur. As she approached the house she heard Gizmo hiss, ‘Abbie’. He went on to lecture her about hunting in Thunderclan territory but she wasn’t really listening. She was gonna do it again. She always did.

        • Shhhhh I know I did. Which clan apprentice matches Abbie’s description from the prologue?
          (Don’t answer this)

  • Chapter 1
Abbie was out hunting again. In Thunderclan territory. But this time, she wasn’t being careful.
    “Stop. You shouldn’t be here.”
    “Get out now.”
Abbie looked behind her and saw two cats, a black and white tom and a black she-cat. “I said get out! You scared my rabbit away.”
Abbie grabbed her mouse and ran. She heard the pounding of footsteps and saw the two cats in pursuit. She ran faster dropping her mouse along the way. The two cats kept chasing. Abbie leapt up a tree. In a heartbeat, she was at the top, in a place where they couldn’t reach her.
“What do you think your doing, hunting in my territory?” Abbie recognized the black she-cat as Nightpelt, who was the one who was speaking.
“You should know better, young kittypet.” So this is good cat, bad cat, Abbie thought.
“What is so wrong with hunting?” Abbie muttered. But Nightpelt heard her.
“Nothing, except you’re also trespassing!” Nightpelt yowled, almost loud enough for the entire forest to hear. So? Abbie thought not daring to say anything.
“Why do you have to hunt here, little one?” The other cat meowed up.
“Why can’t you hunt in your own territory, kittypet?” Nightpelt spat that last word out in disgust.
“The mice here taste better,” Abbie replied, with a smirk on her face.
Nightpelt was really angry now, and was trying to climb up the weak tree herself.
“Calm down, Nightpelt, let’s go,” The grey and white cat calmly meowed.
“I told you she didn’t have a reason!” Nightpelt exclaimed as they left the clearing.
Gizmo was upset with Abbie now. And Roxie was scared for her. And Gater, well, he kept his thoughts to himself. All Abbie did these days was sleep, and hunt. Hunt in Thunderclan territory. Most of the time, she succeeded. Sometimes she didn’t. Sometimes she was caught or she got in a fight. And Abbie was only a kit.
Abbie woke up and stretched out as the sun was rising. Is it safe now? Can I go now? Abbie looked and saw all the others asleep. Abbie crept out of the clearing, being careful not to wake anycat. As it was still dawn, there were very few cars out. Abbie was able to cross the thunderpath with ease. One thing that was out were cats. Thunderclan cats. As Abbie started to make her way deeper into Thunderclan she spotted by a group of cats. A patrol. There was Nightpelt, Ac the grey she-cat that attacked Gizmo, and two other cats she didn’t recognize. They spotted her too. She ran. They followed. Maybe Gizmo was right. Maybe she shouldn’t be hunting and trespassing in Thunderclan territory. But maybe Abbie was right. Maybe she had a right to hunt and they had no right to stop her. Or did they?
All these thoughts flashed in her mind as she ran. These thoughts and many more.
    AHH!

Abbie suddenly slipped down a sandy hill into an equally as sandy clearing. She had to keep running. She had to keep going. She couldn’t be caught in a fight. Gizmo would never have to know about this morning hunting trip. She kept running, looking back. She slipped through a hole and landed in a grassy tunnel. Where to? Abbie was nervous, but the footsteps kept thrumming above her. She had to go. Before they found the hole. So Abbie ran. She ran. After a long time of running she reached a fork. She could go back, turn left or turn right. The thrumming was back, or she thought it was. So she ran. She ran left. After a long time of running, Abbie was worried she chose the wrong path. She kept going. Eventually, the path forked upwards. Finally, fresh air! And the smell of death? Abbie rushed up into the burial place, then the forest, forgetting where she was. She walked forwards, her eyes closed.
    SNAP!
A twig branch broke. Abbie froze. She was still spotted. By a Thunderclan tom sitting by the river. By Cloudwhisker. He was done with her. The first few times, he tolerated. But he’s done now. He growled stalking towards her. And Abbie ran. She ran home as fast as she could, which wasn’t fast enough. She was about to reach the thunderpath when Cloudwhisker grabbed her and shook her a couple times.
“Let me go!!!” Abbie hissed struggling. Cloudwhisker was surprised at how strong she was for her size and for the fact she was a kittypet. In his moment of weakness, Abbie kicked his chest and sprang forward, out of Cloudwhisker’s jaws. She sprinted across the thunderpath and was home, Everyone was still asleep. Good. she thought. She was finally down with Thunderclan hunting. Or was she? Something about Thunderclan territory intrigued her. Maybe it was Thunderclan itself.

  • Chapter 2
Abbie woke up, shivering. Why am I shivering? She thought. Shouldn’t I be nice and warm inside my twoleg nest? Oh. She remembered, I came back late from my most recent ‘scouting trip’ into Thunderclan territory. She had stopped hunting there, as it was Leaf-bare, but had started scouting trips, to see what it was like. Since she came back late, she had to sleep on the porch, and the porch gets awfully cold during the night.
She went off the porch just as Roxie came out of the newly unlocked door. “Where are you going?” She asked.
“Exploring,” Abbie said, which was her answer every time. Roxie vaguely nodded and went back in to get more sleep. Gizmo and Gater were still in the barn, so she was free to go. Not that they would have stopped her anyway. They knew it was no hope and she wasn’t stealing so they were fine with it.
When Abbie got deeper into the forest she stopped and watched. She watched it for a long time. The sun rose and kept rising up in the sky but yet she waited. Finally, the perfect two cats came out of Thunderclan camp. She knew they always hunted together. It was Nightpelt and Cloudwhisker. Abbie walked out of the bush and was quickly spotted. Nightpelt leaped at her but stopped when she saw Abbie wasn’t running.
“I-,” Abbie paused. “I want to join the clan,”
“Oh!” Nightpelt said surprised. “I am sorry I was being so hard on you, even when you weren’t hunting. Our leader was really sick and I guess I took everything on myself. Let me think about it. Meet me here tomorrow, ok?”
“Ok,” Abbie mewed. She raced off into the forest and back home. She stopped at the thunderpath. Car after car after car came racing by. I got to do this, she thought. Abbie ran across the thunderpath, but then…
    SCREECH!!

The monster suddenly skidded, spraying her with dirt and ashes. Gizmo was suddenly next to her, dragging her out of the thunderpath. He brought her to a puddle and sprayed her with water. Abbie woke up and looked at Gizmo. “Wha-What happened?” Abbie meowed, confused.
“A monster almost hit you and, well it didn’t.”
“I can see that,” Abbie said as she stood up and shook herself off. “I’m covered in dirt!”
“I can see,” Gizmo chuckled. “You’ll need a bath.”
“Nooo!!!!! Not a bath, anything but a bath!”
Suddenly Abbie’s twolegs came out of the house. At the sight of their beloved golden and white cat covered in dirt, they ran over there and picked her up. Abbie yowled and struggled, but she could not get out of her owner’s grasp. They took her upstairs and Abbie saw Roxie smirk.
Abbie came running down the steps all sleek and shiny. She gave herself one last shake before plumping down in the cat bed. Roxie suddenly speaks out, “So how was your bath?”
Abbie rolls her eyes at the kitten, then Abbie starts, “I-,” Abbie paused. “I might move to the forest.” Abbie meowed looking away from Roxie.
“What?!” Roxie mewed. Roxie turned away, looking hurt.
“I’m sorry, it’s- it’s for the best. You know- You know how much this home life doesn’t suit me and- and I was always intrigued by the forest.”
    “I understand.”
The next morning Abbie awoke and looked at the sleeping Roxie, knowing that she might not see her again. She closed her eyes, tears forming. She walked through the kitty door and out into the forest. Before crossing the thunderpath, she looked back at the twoleg nest for the last time and then bounded across the thunderpath. As sunhigh came around, Nightpelt and Cloudwhisker came strolling out of camp. Abbie jumped out of the bush, to the surprise of Cloudwhisker.
“Ahh, Abbie, just the cat we were looking for. I have made my decision.” Nightpelt meowed.
After a long wait Abbie replied, “Well, what is it?”
“Oh sorry. You can join Thunderclan!”
    “Oh Thank you Nightpelt!”
“Actually it’s Nightstar now. I’m the leader!” Nightstar puffed out her chest proudly.
“Why would you change your name just because you became a leader?” Abbie looked confused.
“Well, tradition. It also gives leaders a better connection to Starclan.”
“Oh, I see. I learned about Starclan from Gizmo. Gizmo know’s a lot about the clans.”
“Let’s go to camp,” Cloudwhisker said, and the three of them walked into camp.
