Happy Mail: Valentine’s Day Edition

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!!

This is Kat, coming at you with a special Valentine’s Day edition of Happy Mail.

A lot of people tend to be very cynical about Valentine’s Day. “It’s just a made-up excuse to sell candy and cards,” they’ll say as they sniff indignantly at your heart-red Fun-dip packet. Or worse, the day itself will bum you out as you spend yet another February 14th without a love interest to surprise you with heart-shaped doughnuts.

Well, as someone who’s been alone for two decades worth of Valentine’s Days, I actually love this holiday. Do you want to know why?

Everyone tends to be so happy! I’ll be walking home from school and see a dozen people lined up outside a flower store, all tapping their feet excitedly to deliver their significant others a bouquet of roses. I’ll see people carrying a box of chocolates around, faces broadly smiling as their person had professed love for them that morning. I’ll notice little kids holding their parents’ hands and excitedly telling them about all the candy they got from their classmates. I get secondhand happiness as I see how happy and in love everyone else is (which is a nice change from the secondhand anxiety I usually get). See, Valentine’s day isn’t necessarily about romantic love; it’s about LOVE love.

Whether you are “alone” for Valentine’s day or not, know that you are both loved and swarmed with love around you. Stop for a moment and take a deep breath of the rose-perfumed air, and let the happy smiles around you make your heart a little happier.
