it’s a book by Jane Austen, which basically satirizes the pressures that the society of the time she lived in (early 19th century England) placed on marriage.
It centres around the Bennets, a family of five daughters and no sons. Unfortunately, because they live in the 1800s, this means that when Mr. Bennet dies, their house and land will go to the nearest male relative instead of his wife or daughters. Since none of their daughters are married yet, the closest male relative is a distant cousin. This puts the family under a lot of pressure to get at least one daughter married, so the rest of the family will have somewhere to live should Mr. Bennet pass away. Thus ensues the rather absurd and hilarious plot – aka. Mrs Bennet tries her hardest to play matchmaker 😉
The title refers to the characters of Elizabeth (Lizzy) Bennet and Mr. Darcy, who represent Pride and Prejudice respectively. Elizabeth is proud, stubborn, and holds a grudge very easily. Mr. Darcy, on the other hand, has a very narrow world view when the book starts. Unfortunately, since Mr. Darcy is quite rich, Mrs Bennet wants Lizzy to marry him to secure her and the rest of her daughters’ futures. Due to their strong and rather stubborn personalities, and the fact they’re both rather quick to judge, their first few encounters are…quite tense, to say the least 😛
There’s a lot of other side plots involving the other sisters and Lizzy’s friend, Charlotte, but I won’t get into that 😛
Basically, Jane Austen was making fun of how ridiculous the standards for marriage were at the time, as Mrs. Bennet, upon first glance, seems to be a rather overbearing and ridiculous character; however, she’s not really in the wrong with everything she’s doing to get her daughters to marry. Because of the time period, the sisters’ prospects were very much determined on how well they married, and Austen highlights how absurd this is by having the most eccentric, loud, and ridiculous character actually be…well…right
It’s quite a great book/story, and you’ll probably laugh quite a bit if you ever end up reading/watching it
Ya! It’s so funny, you should watch it. But it pretty long 😛 FIVE HOURS in episodes 😛 It’s super funny! We’re all sick and having a lazy day watching it for the first time 😛
