Hi Flam! This might be a hard question for you, but what is your favourite musical youโve taken part in, and what was your role?
That’s actually a very easy question for me, haha! no doubt my favorite production I’ve been in is my very first actually! our production was Newsies Jr. and I played Katherine! (I say it’s my favorite not only because it was the first I’d ever been in and just had such a wonderful time, but I also met three of my very best friends through this musical that I wouldn’t have met otherwise! they were also the ones who introduced me to Hazbin, which is my very favorite TV show ๐ )
Wow! I donโt know how you can stand up in front of people and act (playing instruments, yes, announcing, yes, acting? NOOOOO-) What is Newsies about?
newsies is actually based off of a movie version of it that came out probably 30ish years before that, and both the movie and musical are heavily inspired by the newsboy strike of 1899! I personally think the musical is much better than the movie and I know a lot more about the musical, so I could yap about it for quite a while haha ๐
essentially, the main character, Jack Kelly, is a newsie who one day hopes to earn enough money to move out west with his best friend, Crutchie, who’s a fellow newsie with a permanent limp from polio. one day, the head of the newspaper company The World, Joseph Pulitzer, raises the prices of newspapers up from where they were, which makes the newsies very angry. 2 new newsies, Davey (who was played by one of my best friends!) and his younger brother, Les (who was also played by a good friend of mine) help encourage Jack to lead the newsies in a strike against Pulitzer! they also end up meeting a young reporter, Katherine (aka yours trulyโจ), who ends up writing a headlining story about the newsies’ strike and helps them with the strike!
I’d definitely recommend giving newsies a listen, as it’s a wonderful musical and a lot of fun! and a fully recorded version of it is available on Disney+ if you have that :DD
