Housekeeping Rules
- Include content warnings if necessary! This can be things like graphic violence, death, sexual content, etc. If you wouldn’t recommend it to a young kid without warning them what’s coming, then include content warnings!
- Try to keep non-book chatter out of this page! It can be redirected to the Tavern.
- Try to keep Warrior Cats chatter out of this page! We’re here to highlight books aside from the cats we know and love, so you can head over to the Sunning Patch or the Elder’s Den to discuss Warrior Cats!
- Fanfiction recommendations are allowed but fanfiction advertisements are not! This means that while you can recommend someone or your own fanfiction to other people, you cannot announce or remind people of a new chapter release on this page. You may do so on the Fan Fiction page.
I’m looking for book recommendations!
Level: young adult
Age: 12+
Genre: fantasy, action, romance
Other: no very suggestive content please
Page flippo?
Like I said on the last page, I’d recommend Four Kingdoms, it’s a very long fantasy romance series with no suggestive content, and The Selection is a dystopian romance trilogy that’s probably for a little bit older, but there’s nothing further than making out in that one. I’d also recommend KOTLC if you haven’t read that, it’s a great middle grade-YA fantasy series with very long books
Marissa Meyer’s book could be good! They’re pretty clean as far as I remember, though some swears might be included. Mostly, they are fantasy, fairy-tale adaptations, sci-fi, romance, and action (which is why I couldn’t believe that Instant Karma was written by her :P), and some books include The Lunar Chronicles, Renegades, and Heartless.
I recommend the Books of Bayern series by Shannon Hale! It’s a quartet of books about these teen girls who learn the languages of the elements. There’s hardly any suggestive content. It’s one of my all time favorite fantasy series, and I would go into more detail here but writing out long comments has been crashing my browser lately.
Depending on the sort of fantasy you like, there is Ursula K LeGuinn’s Earthsea series (wizards, dragons, set on a world of islands in the midst of the sea) or Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy (more in a SciFi direction, alternative universes, including ours, war in heaven). And I recommend Lord of the Rings, the great grandad of all fantasy trilogies, to absolutely everyone.
I’d reccommend you give The Summer King Chronicles by Jess E Owen a go! They follow a gryphon as he tries to navigate his society ruled by a tyrant. It’s a really classic fantasy coming of age story with lots of fun action and some romance sprinkled in as well!
You could also give Sabriel by Garth Nix a go! It follows a young necromancer as she journeys to find her missing father. It’s also really classic fantasy with some very cool worldbuilding and also a really sweet romance!
Finally, I’d reccommend Skyward by Brandon Sanderson. This is science-fiction rather than fantasy, but the action is really, really good as are all of the twists and turns the plot takes! It follows a pilot defending her planet against what seems to be an invading alien force.
Cinder. It’s a great sci-if book with romance, action, adventure, and it’s very good! Highly recommend.
My mom’s reading this fantasy romance young adult book called Divine Rivals, you might like that! She’s really enjoying it, but it might be more like 14+. I have some middle grade suggestions if you want those though!
Oh, definitely try out this YA duology called The Other Side of the Sky by Meagan Spooner and Amie Kaufman (at least I think it’s a duology lol)! It’s like a slow burn fantasy/sci-fi forbidden romance, and the plot twists are actually kinda crazy. Nothing to be considered inappropriate though. Really underrated, and probably my new fav book of 2024.
You could also try out Caraval by Stephenie Garber, which I thought was an incredible book. There weren’t explicit scenes at all, but it’s a bit more romancy. It’s a great romantasy book and a sorta enemies-to friends-to lovers lol.
And lastly, there’s always Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas, but it does get spicy towards the end of the series. I did love it though, really action-packed.
Maybe the Land of stories by Chris Colfer? That or KOTLC
I don’t really have a good reason, but I think you’d like Hunger Games(it does have a bit of suggestive content, slightly inappropriate)
Maze Runner is a great series to read, I enjoyed it quite a bit.
The Hunger Games is also one that I enjoyed that might fit those category’s
Wings of Fire would be perfect for you. Written by one of Erin Hunter and is full of action fantasy and romance! The main characters are dragons. However if you don’t like gore I wouldn’t recommend it, there is a lot of violence, death and psychological issues from the characters.
The Ascendence series by Jennifer A. Neilson is pretty good!
six of crows. it has some mature themes and rather graphic violence but it’s my favorite book. it’s fantasy adventure and it’s about a HEIST!!! i’d set it at 13+
the selection. this one’s a dystopian romance. there’s no steamy scenes, but it’s still ya romance. i’d do some research first to see if you’re comfortable. i read it at 11 or 12, but i also had an unusually high reading level.
for more middle grade, id recommend the aru shah books. it’s fantasy adventure and has a lot of hindu mythology. they’re absolutely hysterical. the story is engaging and thought-provoking at times too
One of my biggest pet peeves in books is when the main character has no personality except “I don’t like the government.” I love a good old corrupt society, but it really annoys me that it’s always the same protagonist- a perfect heroine who wants to defeat the evil government, and at the end of the book they do it.
Does anyone know of a book with more character development than that? Maybe someone who supports the government, or is even part of it! Or someone who joins the “become the prince’s wife” contest because they want to, not because they need to kill the royal family, but after a while they end up realising that the prince is cruel.
If only…
Katniss in the Hunger Games initially does not want to be the symbolic leader of a revolution, she just wants to save her family. But she’s forced into this role by others and by circumstances, and eventually embraces it.
Lyra in His Dark Materials is difficult to explain in a few sentences. She is by nature an adventurer and a rule breaker. She wants to protect her friends, but because of who she is and where/when/how she is born, she has unique powers and is drawn into conflict between cosmic forces, and turns out to be THE ONE predicted by prophecy.
I’d reccommend Un Lun Dun by China Meiville! There’s certainly a corrupt government, but the protagonist is really fantastic- I loved her determination and agency! It really puts a twist on a lot of typical tropes, I think you’d enjoy it!
If your looking for corrupt society, I’d recommend Legend by Marie Lu!!!!!! 😀 Really good dystopian themes, absolutely wonderful and relatable characters, and a really, REALLU interesting plot with plenty of twists!!!!!
I can’t really think of something like that but I remember a book where there’s a perfect heroine who wants to defeat the evil government, and at the end of the book they DON’T do it 😛
The Hunger Games, possibly Divergent tho im not sure on that one, The Hybrid Chronicles, the Matched series, the Selection (tho that one is mainly about romance with the corrupt government taking a backseat)
Sir Callie and the Champions Of Helston by Esme Symes-Smith could be good for you!!!
Argh I really hate those types of books! I’m becoming really connected to the story “Small Favors” by Erin A. Craig, it’s not actually about a “government” per se, more monsters and stuff, but I like the protagonist because she has a personality and the romance isn’t annoying for me either
Looking for book recommendations!
Ages: 9-12 (I shall never outgrow it)
Genre: fantasy, adventure
<3
harry potter, dreamkeepers saga, chronicles of narnia
I second the chronicles of narnia!
especially the lion the witch and the wardrobe :3
the other ones i’m not as sure about :p
The Narnia books have a pretty heavy Christian message, which not everyone may be comfortable with. They’re good stories, though, for the most part.
I fifth Chronicles of Narnia!
I’m all for the Christian message 😛
Oh yeah I third that, I’m actually reading them right now
I fourth the chronicles of narnia!
:0 I’ve read them too
Keeper of the Lost Cities by Shannon Messenger!!!!!!! 😀
Fablehaven by Brandon Mull
Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins
The Menagerie by Tui T Sutherland
The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill
Fable haven is such a good series
Skandar and The Unicorn Thief by A.F. Steadman, Wilderlore by Amanda Foody, Sir Callie and The Champions of Helston by Esme Symes-Smith, and Moongarden by Michelle A Barry
The Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan
Shadow Weavers series by MarcyKate Connolly
The Land of Stories by Chris Colfer
The Pandava series by Roshani Chokshi
The Elementals series by Amie Kaufman,
Going Wild series by Lisa McMann
Story Thieves by James Riley
A Wolf Called Wander by Rosanne Parry
Like A Charm by Elle McNicoll
Mr. Lemoncello’s Library by Chris Grabenstein
The Last Dogs by Christopher Holt
….let’s just say that I’ve read a lot of middle-grade books….😛
I second Land of Stories that was THE series when i was in fourth grade, i tried to convince everyone to read it hah
Wolves of Elementa (the last book is sooooo sad but there is a happy ending), Wolves of the Beyond (some gore), Endling by Katherine Applegate (it’s set in medieval times and it’s about a dog-like fantasy creature)!
The Foxcraft series by Inbali Iserles. It was sort of hard to find though, just warning you. 🙂
Aru Shah and the End of Time by Roshani Chokshi, if you haven’t read it then Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (and the rest of the riordanverse) by Rick Riordan, Keeper of the Lost Cities by Shannon Messenger, the Land of Stories: the Wishing Spell by Chris Colfer, On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness by Andrew Peterson (don’t let the name turn you away)(another note that it was written by a christian author, so it has some implied themes similar to Lord of the Rings and Narnia), if you haven’t read it Wings of Fire: The Dragonet Prophecy by Tui Sutherland, and finally The Menagerie by Tui Sutherland
My favorite KOTLC ship- other than sokeefe, obviously- is Sophie x Sleep /lhj
AGREED
YESSS THAT MUST EXIST *searches despretely*
Though personally, second-fav Sophie ship after Sokeefe is Sopockets 😀 😛 SOPHIE FIND SOME SLEEP YOU GUYS ARE DESTINIED FOR EACHOTHER
but… sophie x pockets…
SOPHIE X POCKETS JFJDSAHGJFKDLSHGSD
yes. forget sofitz. SOSLEEP
I love that one, but my favorite is Dex x Anyone who actually appreciates him
Haha so true
Hello! I’m Sorrelfeather and I’m new here, I am looking for a book about dragons similar to wings of fire, age range 10-14, maybe a bit less violence and no gay/pride stuff. I do love wings of fire (and warriors of course!) but sadly i am not aloud to read it because of the gay stuff
Aww that’s a shame about wings of fire- I found the romance quite sweet!
It’s difficult to find books exactly like wings of fire but here are some recommendations that you might like!
His Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik follows dragon riders in the Napoleonic Wars. It’s very good fun! It’s not exactly like wof, as people play a much bigger role and it’s not from the point of view of the dragon but I think it’s really good.
The Summer King Chronicles by Jess E Owen initially follows gryphons, but introduces dragons later on in the series. It’s similar to wings of fire in that humans don’t play a role at all! There’s also a lot less violence.
The Erth Dragons series by Chris D’Lacey is also from the point of view of dragons and involves them colonising a world full of humans. I can’t quite remember the levels of violence- I suspect it’s similar to wings of fire.
I’m sorry but no pride? Why, if I may ask?
I think they said they aren’t allowed to read a book if there’s LGBTQ+ content in it
oh i didn’t see that
Wings Of Fire has no lgbtq stuff in it in the first 5 books! ^^ I’m not allowed to read the rest until I’m 15 because of Lgbtq in it too.
I read a book a while ago called New Dragon City by Mari Mancusi. It is about a dragon apocolypse. It has both dragon and human point of views. I am not sure about the violence or LGBTQ+ stuff, because I have not read it in a while, but it is a book about dragons.
Oh gosh I just finished reading this Starclan-cursed they both die at the end and I’m de.stroy.ed. amazing sure loved it sure but no one should have to suffer the way I did…
I’m unclear about what it is you finished reading.
Yes I might have made that a bit unclear cause I was Yeah you know um whatever the book was They both die at the end by Adam Silvera
Omg I finished it yesterday and I was bawling my eyes out! An amazing book, but I SUFFERED. No book has made me cry like that before.
haha I read that. I think there’s some added tragedy because the entire time, you know how it ends. They are doomed by the narrative. I think the added futility makes it more soul-crushing
anyway I own it and i love it very much <3
Has anyone read the Hybrid Chronicles? (The first book is called What’s left of me I believe…) It’s about a society where two people are born into one body, but they “settle” by about age five and the recessive soul disappears. The pov is a girl named Eva, who is a recessive soul but she never disappeared. Her sister Addie controls their body and no one knows about Eva except for her. They meet another girl who also has a recessive sister and they slowly realize that there’s no real reason for Eva to disappear. It’s a really good series and the two souls thing is a little weird but it’s not like religious or anything, it might make a few people uncomfortable so if that sort of thing makes you feel weird then feel free to stay away but it’s really good
This sounds like my kind of book! Unfortunately the library only has the audiobook version which I can’t use because I can’t focus on audiobooks, but maybe one day they’ll have the book (or at least an ebook or sm)
Sounds cool but would prob give me nightmares 😀
That sounds AWESOME – I’ll look for that!
oh my gosh, I saw that at the library the other day but didn’t get a chance to look at it. Is that what it’s about??? I have to get it now 😛
OOH I’M INTRIGUED
Time to add it to my ever growing tbr….
(which I probably won’t shorten because instead I’ll just reread all the riordanverse books 😌)
So real, I have so many books to read but I can’t stop rereading my favorites
It sounds really interesting! I will try to check it out.
Do any of y’all like these books? :DDD
🐳 A Dog’s Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron
🐳 Bears of the Ice by Kathryn Lasky
🐳 The Lost Rainforest by Eliot Schrefer
🐳 Swallows and Amazons by
🐳 (A classic!) The BFG by Roald Dahl
🐳 (Another classic!) Matilda by Roald Dahl
🐳 The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster
BFG is a real classic 🙌
a dog’s purpose was so amazing that I can’t describe it with words aaah
and I’ve read the first book to the lost rainforest, I’m pretty sure it was mez’s magic or something like that? but I remember it being pretty good
I love Roald Dahl’s books 😀
THE BFG AND MATILDA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know about the Phantom Tollbooth, a personal fav of mine. Also know Matidla (who doesn’t?) Lol, anyways, haven’t heard of the others!
Swallows and Amazons was a formative part of my childhood I will love it forever!!!
I think I’ve read all but Swallows and the Amazons!
A DOGS PURPOSE <3
I liked the Phantom Tollbooth and Matilda as a kid!
Matilda is really good!
Has anyone ever read The Last Fire Season, by Manjula Martin? It’s interesting to read, especially if you’re from California and know about the fire seasons. I’ve also had the pleasure of meeting the author, and she’s really nice!
Never heard of it, but it sounds interesting!!!!!! :DDD It’s super cool that you got to meet the author!!!! What exactly are the fire seasons???
In California, and in many other places in the Western US, the fire season used to be late summer–fall, but now extremely destructive forest and brush fires happen at almost any time of the year, due to climate change.
I just read Children of Anguish and Anarchy today! I was really looking forward to it since it’s the final book in the Legacy of Orisha trilogy and the previous two books in the trilogy were amazing!! However, I didn’t enjoy this book very much and it was a bit of a disappointment in my opinion. 🙁
For those of you who have read the Legacy of Orisha trilogy, what did you think of it? 🙂
Ah no – what’s the series about?
Does anyone know any books that are similar to Warriors cats, but have a little more romance? Sorry if this counts as talking about Warrior cats-
Keeper of the Lost Cities comes to mind 😀
Has anybody here read the Book Theif by Markus Zusak?
If you have, on a scale of 1-10 how much did you cry at the end and who was your favorite character?
I have started it, but never really finished it. It is really good!
9/10, I didn’t cry, and I liked Death!
Death was great!
I tried reading it a while ago but couldn’t get into it. having the main pov as death was intriguing, and I have plans to try again one day
yes! at first I thought it was a bit slow, but a little later I started to love it! I’d say I cried 8/10, and although I didn’t really cry, (because my tears often refuse to come :p) I did more than most books. and my favourite characters are probably death and Rudy.
I just finished book two of the Arc of a Scythe series and man I am loving it. That is a good series if anyone wants to try it.
