Contest entry using if Hollyleaf died in tunnels prompt!
Hollyleaf sat in her old nest. She coughed. “Fallen Leaves….”. Hollyleaf didn’t want to die alone, without any of her family. Or, well, what I thought was my family. She knew that Squirrelflight was still related to her, just not….as close as ThunderClan-and all the Clans- once believed. Another rattling cough shook her black body. “Fallen Leaves..why am I dying? I thought I was still young…” Fallen Leaves looked at her, his green eyes blurry. Is my eyesight going already? Fallen Leaves gently mewed,”Hollyleaf…I don’t know. You’re still young…I think it has something to do with your breathing.” Just then, a loud mew sounded. Indistinct, but coming closer. And a gray she-cat stepped out of the shadows, looking harassed. She was followed by a gray tabby. Hollyleaf recognized them as Dovewing and Ivypool. Dovewing was glaring at Ivypool, but soon realized they had company. “Who are you?”, Ivypool mewed suspiciously. Hollyleaf lifted her head slightly. She rasped,”My name…is Hollyleaf.” Another cough. Dovewing hurried forward and said,”Sister of Jayfeather and Lionblaze? Disappeared in the tunnels moons ago? We thought you were dead!” Ivypool glared at her sister. “Well, if you and your ignorant eyes haven’t noticed, Hollyleaf is dying. Would you like us to do anything?” Ivypool glanced at Hollyleaf and Fallen Leaves, who both shook their heads. “Well, in that case, we’ll sit here for moral support.” But Hollyleaf did not hear her. The darkness had come, and she didn’t fight it.
so beautiful!

Ooo spooky! Love it
Thanks!
Part 1, evil Shadowsight:
Shadowsight was separating clumps of yarrow stems in the cool shade of the medicine cat den. Briefly closing his eyes, he wondered if the shiver that rippled down his spine was just a matter of the cold air – or if it was due to his icy heart.
Shame and grief had wrecked his world since the Dark Forest battle. It had hardly been an entire moon since then – when Ashfur had been killed. And Bristlefrost, thought Shadowsight, with a bitter lump clogging his throat.
With a shuddering breath, he hung his head in shame at the memory. It didn’t matter now if Rootspring hated him or not. He himself did – he despised what he had never done to save Bristlefrost. Mingled with despair, a surge of fury flooded through him. Anger toward the Clans, both living and dead; toward Ashfur, as the villain’s sneering face floated through his mind, screeching revenge; and toward himself, the medicine cat who had brought endless suffering upon his Clanmates.
He could hear ShadowClan’s content murmurs behind him. How dare they yawn and pretend like nothing had ever happened?
He dug his claws into the ground, then darkly glanced over at the assembled cats in the clearing. Perhaps Ashfur had twisted his heart for evil… So what? His Clanmates already loathed him for how he had shattered their precious peace.
“Shadowsight?” Puddleshine padded toward him, gingerly walking on his soft toes. His brown fur was sleek and glossy as if he had just groomed himself. “I asked you to do one thing! One thing!” He whisked his tail toward the scattered pile of yarrow stems. “Great StarClan, you’d think I was working with a kit.”
Shadowsight clenched his fangs, barely suppressing a hiss of fury. “Puddleshine?” he mewed softly. “Could – could you come with me? Please? I want to show you something.”
Puddleshine grunted, “Fine. But you’re finishing this job when we get back.”
Part 2:
Oh, I do have a job to finish, Shadowsight thought grimly. He weaved through the long grass at the edge of the clearing and slipped into the dark, sweet-scented forest. Puddleshine’s pawsteps were light and slow behind him.
Shadowsight kept casting swift glances behind him. As he tiptoed along, dew-speckled leaves slapped him in the muzzle, and twigs scraped his pelt.
“Shadowsight, where – ack!” There was a pained yelp from Puddleshine. When Shadowsight turned around, he spotted the medicine cat fussing over a thorn embedded in his pad.
As Puddleshine hastily licked his bleeding paw, he spat, “Where in StarClan are we going?”
Slowly, Shadowsight ran his tongue over his lips. “You’re going to StarClan,” he hissed quietly, like a viper, “but my time is just beginning.” Faster than a bolt of lightning, he lunged for Puddleshine and pinned him down with a thud.
The medicine cat screeched and writhed in his grip, his eyes bulging. “Shadowsight…” he croaked in horror. “What -”
Shadowsight raised a forepaw and slashed it across Puddleshine’s neck. Yet he squeezed his eyes shut and looked away; he didn’t want to stare at his old mentor.
The undergrowth rustled, and a horrified voice whispered, “Shadowsight?”
Shadowsight whisked his head around. His mother, Dovewing, and the warriors Stonewing and Pouncestep were gaping at him in – what, disbelief? Terror?
Part 3:
Dovewing let out the smallest whimper. “My son…”
“You killed him!” Stonewing shrieked and cannoned into Shadowsight. The medicine cat stumbled, spun on his heels, and raked the warrior’s muzzle with his blood-stained claws.
An enraged yowl pierced his ears. Claws wrapped around his throat, and Pouncestep’s scent overwhelmed his senses as she thrust him away. Her ferocious eyes were blazing. “Murderer!” she screeched, tipping back her muzzle.
Shadowsight tried to stammer, “But – you’re my sister -”
“I’ll kill you!” Pouncestep lunged for him, but Shadowsight flew back and vaulted away, into the deep and frightening forest. Shadows closed around him; the darkness was pressing at the back of his mind.
His Clanmates’ yowls rang through the air, yet they were fading behind him.
What had he just done? He stumbled to a stop to catch his breath; instead of remorse, there was a heavy block of satisfaction in his chest. Yes.…
It didn’t matter now that he was an outcast. He’d had his revenge – and he’d be back for more. Just you wait, ShadowClan. You’ll regret destroying my life… as I will destroy yours.
I loved it!
Thank you! I’ll be doing other prompts later too 😊
Okay!
This is amazing! Love it!
Thank you! 😀 Writing is my favorite thing to do – Warriors fanfiction is awesome!
Part 1 of Dying Violets
Joining the Kin was one of the best thing Violetshine had ever done. Killing Darktail was second to that, even though she had lost an eye.
She was the leader of the Kin now, and everyone respected her. Everyone, that is, except Sleekwhisker. She was pregnant with Darktail’s kits when she had killed him, and had named one of the after him: Darkkit. His sister was named Bouncekit. Violetshine had no quarrel with them, of course. They practically idolized her, despite the stories their mother had told them. They were Darkfrost and Bouncecloud now, very sufficient hunters and fighters.
But Sleekwhisker… Sleekwhisker was a threat that Violetshine should have dealt with a long time ago.
Violetshine was sitting in the camp, watching Sleekwhisker with slitted eyes. It was time to end this. “Sleekwhisker!” She called to her. The yellow she-cat looked up from the robin she was sharing with Darkfrost. “Hmm?” She asked, her mouth full. “Want to go hunting?”
It was Newleaf, and prey was plentiful, but there were still cats who went to their nests with empty bellies. “Sure. Just let me finish this,” Sleekwhisker answered. “Ok,” Violetshine said. I guess I can let her finish her last meal.
When she was done, Violetshine led the yellow she-cat across the camp and outside. It was in ShadowClan’s old territory. The Clans were gone now, defeated by the Kin. The survivors had either escaped before their execution, or had joined them. The only exception was her sister, Twigbranch. She had let her go, after she had refused to join. Violetshine had also agreed to let Alderheart go, because without him, she would be dead.
Part 2 of Dying Violets
“Did you have anywhere in mind?”
Sleekwhisker’s meow brought Violetshine back to the present. “Oh? Uh, yeah. Let’s go to the lake.”
Taking the lead, she headed down towards the sparkling, beautiful lake. Many cats had died there… Flametail, Dawnpelt, Needletail, and so, so many others. It was the Kin’s signature torture and killing device. And the list of its victims was about to get one more cat.
“C’mon. We can see if there’s any frogs down by the reeds!” Sleekwhisker said, and dashed off. It doesn’t matter if I have to suffocate her with mud. Any way of death is good enough, Violetshine thought gruesomely.
When the black-and-white she-cat caught up with her, Sleekwhisker was already poised at the edge of the reed bed, scanning the pools of secluded, muddy water for any sign of frogs.
Dropping into a crouch, Violetshine crept forward until she was barely a hair-length away from the yellow she-cat. A rippling movement in one of the pools sent Sleekwhisker crashing away into the brittle stems of the reeds, and Violetshine charged after her. “Cut it off!” Sleekwhisker yowled at her. NOW! Violetshine’s mind screamed.
Leaping onto the yellow she-cat, she tussled her to the ground. Sleekwhisker’s green eyes showed confusion for a moment, then a deep, burning hatred. “So,” She snarled, trying to shake herself free of Violetshine’s pin. “This is how it ends, huh? Well, YOUR going to be the one to die!”
Hurling herself upward, Sleekwhisker unbalanced Violetshine and clawed her muzzle. Screeching with fury, the black-and-white she-cat lunged for her throat, narrowly missing by a hair-length. Slipping on the mud, she tumbled over, giving Sleekwhisker time to spin around and pin her.
Part 3 of Dying Violets
“Goodbye…. Darktail, I hope you’re watching this!” The yellow she-cat ripped her claws over Violetshine’s neck. No! I will NOT let her kill me, not without costing her her life! She thought. She fell limp, holding her blood-soaked breath until Sleekwhisker got off of her. “Now Darkfrost and Bouncecloud will be safe,” She huffed. Violetshine sprang up and landed on her back. Yowling with surprise and fear, she tried to see who it was. A dark fog was gathering at the edges of Violetshine’s vision, but it didn’t matter. She was taking Sleekwhisker with her, and that was the important thing. “If I die, you go with me!” She screeched as best she could, coughing up blood. Slashing her claws across the yellow she-cat’s throat, her opponent collapsed. “And your kits will not be safe, after their camp mates learn that you killed their leader!” Violetshine hissed in her lifelong enemy’s ear.
Taking a staggering step away from Sleekwhisker, she collapsed, and the inky blackness of the fog enclosed around her.
Wow! I loved it!
Thanks!
OH WOW! Amazing! 😃 I loved it!
My second entry!
Part 1 of Creeping Ivy
Ivypool paced around the edge of the camp, hissing to herself. “Just do it. Just kill her. Dovewing is a whiny brat anyway. Whitewing and Birchfall will pay more attention to me if I kill her.”
It was Moonhigh, and the rest of her Clanmates were asleep. Her mind was abuzz with images of the cats she had already killed: Antpelt, Flametail, Tigerheart, Brambleclaw…. now it was time to taste a different kind of blood: The blood of her kin.
Regret had no place in Ivypool’s heart. It was time to do what she did best: murder. Stepping softly inside the warriors’ den, she made her way to Dovewing’s nest. “Hey! Hey, sis! Wake up,” She said, prodding her sister’s pale gray pelt with her paw. “Hrrrrmp,” Dovewing mumbled. “This is important!” Ivypool growled. “What’s more important than a good night’s sleep?” She whined, blinking her golden eyes open.
“Hunting. Now come on, we can hunt near the ShadowClan border, if you want.” Ivypool tried to mimic a sweet, comforting voice, but the words came out through gritted teeth. “You won’t leave me alone until I come with you, will you?” Dovewing growled as she hoisted herself out of her nest. Ivypool smiled.
Part 2 of Creeping Ivy
She and Dovewing reached the border stream that ThunderClan shared with ShadowClan. Along the way, her sister had caught a mouse and a nightingale. Ivypool was still empty-pawed, but it didn’t matter; her plan was going well, and she didn’t need to catch anything.
“Come on. Let’s go over here. I can smell voles!” She lied, racing over to a particularly rocky part of the stream shore. Dovewing frowned, but followed her. Another reason why she should die. She’s too naive to recognize a lie! Ivypool thought.
“Hurry up! I see one- right in between those rocks!” She whispered loudly. As soon as Dovewing was close enough to the rocks, Ivypool rushed forward and slammed her sister’s head against the boulder, stunning her and making her ear bleed. “W-what?” The pale gray she-cat asked, confused. Wasting not a moment, Ivypool lunged and bit down hard on her sister’s throat. She heard a bone snap, Dovewing jerked once, blood flooded her mouth, and her annoying sister was gone.
Going over to the stream, Ivypool dumped the body of the gray she-cat into the stream and watched as it floated on the current, journeying to its doom in the lake. She smiled cruelly.
Many moons had passed since Ivypool had killed Dovewing. Many more victims had followed her sister, the most recent of which had been Squirrelstar. She was Ivystar now, and had wiped out the other Clans along with the help of the Dark Forest. In return, ThunderClan- no, it was RageClan now- had to give up two kits every six moons to the Place of No Stars for a tom and a she-cat could live in one kit’s body until the body grew too old. It was a nice, simple arrangement.
Part 3 of Creeping Ivy
Ivystar was proceeding a ceremony now. It was for Bluekit and Ashkit, both of whom were shaking like leaves. “…We will give up these kits to honor our blessed deal with the Place of No Stars. Come forth now, cats of darkness, and claim these bodies for your own!” As she spoke the final words, a flash of light illuminated the clearing. That’s unusual… Ivystar thought. I group of cats appeared: cats that she had killed. Dovewing stepped forward. “No! You shall not touch or harm any more innocent kits!” Brambleclaw leaped forward to shield Bluekit and Ashkit, who looked even more terrified now.
“What is the meaning of this?!” Ivystar snarled, leaping down from the Highledge. Squirrelstar stepped forward. “The Dark Forest is no more. StarClan has defeated them, and so have you been defeated!” She laughed at the former leader’s bold words. “We still have some here, you know! Cats of RageClan, attack!” But nobody moved. Ivystar was disgruntled by this. “I said, cats of RageClan, attack!”
Tigerheart smiled. “Nobody here likes you. Be free, kits of the past!” With another brilliant flash of light, all the kits that had been given to the Dark Forest appeared. “No! Place of No Stars, come to my aid!” Ivystar yowled to the sky. Nothing happened. Dovewing stepped forward again. “You shall die today, at my claws!” Without hesitation, the pale gray she-cat slashed her claws across Ivystar’s neck, and she fell to the ground, dead,
Wow

Thanks!
Yep!

Here is my second entry!
Evil Squirrelflight – The Flight Of The Squirrel
Part One
Squirrelflight stared helplessly at the tunnel entrance which Bramblestar had disappeared with his will-be mate – Jessy. Indescribable pain was blocking her chest, making it so difficult for Squirrelflight to breathe that she have breath in painful and shuddering gasps.
The pain slowly turned into red hot anger, and everything seams to be boiling inside Squirrelflight, pulsing through her veins. Her vision went blurry with a red fog, and she stumbled backwards, unable to control the fury that has finally released itself after moons of trying to contain it. (Sorry, I can’t write italic, so, when I add this *, it means it’s a thought.) *How dare Bramblestar just turn his back on me, and run off with that stupid excuse for a warrior! What does Miss Perfect has that I don’t?* Squirrelflight looked down at her claws, and flexed them in a way she never did.
“Oh, but I have something that she will never have,” Squirrelflight whispered to herself, a dangerous glint appeared in her once emerald eyes, now turned into the deep shade of the wild vines in the forests, very deep green, almost scary in the lights of the sun. “The ability to… kill.”

Here’s a entry of the top of my head during a lesson so ….
Raging fire 🔥 part 1
Memories flooded through fire claw as blue star yowled white storms name …
Fire paw watched as tiger claw snarks at his cowering apprentice – raven paw. He sighed, such a great warrior as tiger claw was wasted on that coward of an apprentice.
Fire paw hears quiet mews heading closer he sees long tail dark stripe and tiger claw heads together and realisation dawns. “I think I can help.”
Fire paw raises his paw preparing to slice through the gray rogue’s throat suddenly he hears blue star’s yowl “stop!”
Fire claw stood Basking in his new name with dust pelt beside him grey paw and sand paw looking on. He had been right the tabby brown Tom and the pale tabby he had fout with on his first day would make good allies
Fire paw watched as tiger claw snarled at his cowering apprentice. He sighed wishing tiger claw weren’t wasted on this coward of a ‘paw.
Fire paw raised his paw preparing to slice open the rogues throat. Suddenly hearing blue star’s yowl “stop!”
Fire paw strolled toward the stream stopping when he heard hushed mews. Realisation dawning he stepped out “I think I can help.”
Fire claw stood basking in his new name dust pelt beside him he had chosen well. Sand paw and Grey paw looked on tails waving.
Fire claw stepped away from the blood of his former clan mate as a tabby river clan she-cat collapsed sobbing.
Part 1 done!
Ooo spooky
Great job! I like it! Firestar is evil, right?
Woah….. This. Is. Spooky! I love it!!! 😮 Your writing is amazing! Do you have a part 2?
This was good! Spooky! Was there a pat two…?
Yes, there is a part two, and three, and maybe four. But I think typing the story in Document will work better. I promise I’ll finish it soon!
My story, “Poison Holly”, about evil Hollyleaf! I’m very excited about this… he he he he… 😉
Part 1:
The moon was a brilliant orb in a midnight sky. Twinkling like a million tiny suns, the warriors of StarClan were mingling amongst the clouds. No doubt they were looking down in apprehension at the events that were sure to unfold tonight.
Hollyleaf tipped her muzzle into the breeze and glanced at the stars. Forgive me, she pleaded with them. You’ll have a new Clanmate soon, though. She poked her head out of the tunnel mouth, and all around her, the forest was silent except for the hum of night insects.
Hastily, she scrambled into the moonlit clearing. She didn’t have to worry about being seen here; warriors never patrolled the territory at night. Still, she had to be as silent as if she were stalking prey. Well, I suppose I am, she thought grimly.
Damp grass brushed her pelt as she padded toward the heart of ThunderClan. Cool air felt strange on her skin after moons of dwelling in the stuffy tunnels. She felt a twinge of regret as moonlight danced around her black paws. She had been separated for so long from the place she’d always called home – but Leafpool had pushed her to the brink.
At last, the ThunderClan camp flashed into sight. It was a huge black pit in the darkness, and Hollyleaf spotted Thornclaw on guard at the tunnel entrance.
Flexing her claws, she tried to recall the steps she had memorized, her plan for tonight. Yes… She slowly crept through the undergrowth to crouch a fox-length from the tabby warrior. His keen eyes scanned the forest. Then his head swiveled in the other direction, and Hollyleaf saw her opportunity.
Part 2:
With a hiss, she flew from the grass and cannoned into Thornclaw. The warrior grunted as he collapsed to the ground, his paws buckled beneath him, and before he could whirl around, Hollyleaf plunged her fangs into his throat.
Thornclaw’s rigid body slowly fell limp beneath her claws. Hollyleaf backed away, licking away the foul tang of blood on her tongue. One down, one medicine cat to go…
She slipped through the bramble tunnel. Overpowering ThunderClan scents flooded her nostrils as she emerged into the camp. A surge of memories pressed at her mind, but she forced it back, only aware of one instinct: to kill, to slash, to bite.
At the far end of the camp, the medicine cat den was open and oblivious to any threat. Hollyleaf peeked inside, but instantly wished she hadn’t, and she jerked away with a gasp.
Leafpool wasn’t there, but Jayfeather, her brother, was. His presence sent a flare of loss and grief sparking through her.
Where could Leafpool be? Hollyleaf wondered in dismay. She turned, then stopped dead as a soft, startled voice mewed her name.
“Hollyleaf?”
She recognized that voice; it sent hairs spiking along her back, and, with an enraged hiss, spun around and slammed Leafpool to the ground.
Her mother yowled, but only lay still, staring up at her with huge eyes that conveyed grief, and gladness, and fierce regret. “I’m so sorry,” she whispered. “Go ahead, kill me. I don’t blame you.” Her husky mew was thick with emotion. “I love you.”
Part 3:
Hollyleaf almost trembled. Indecision traitorously clashed against the murderous power in her veins. She squeezed her burning eyes shut and slashed Leafpool’s neck with her claws, spraying blood across the clearing. No. I’m sorry, Mother.
“Murderer!” Paws wrapped around her throat and dragged her backward. Hollyleaf thrashed as she choked on white fur, and a pair of furious hind claws slashed at her belly. “Traitor! Liar!” Cloudtail’s shriek split her mind.
Then a second cat joined him and wrenched at her ear. Hollyleaf screeched and stared at Sorreltail looming over her. The tortoiseshell she-cat’s eyes were no longer those of the Clanmate she once knew, however. These were filled with righteous fury and betrayal.
“You abandoned us,” hissed Sorreltail. “You murdered your own mother! I’ll kill -”
Cloudtail cut off her sentence by sharply sinking his fangs into Hollyleaf’s throat. Darkness swam in her vision, and, with a gurgling cough, she met the white warrior’s seething eyes. His nose was scrunched in disdain as her life bled out onto the earth. “I’m – I’m -” She couldn’t finish her sentence as blood trickled down her jaw.
As her head lolled back, she glimpsed a golden tabby warrior racing toward her. “Hollyleaf!” His shriek was distorted, as if she had been dunked underwater. He flung himself to the ground beside her, his hot, raspy breath stinging her whiskers. “You came back… no, don’t go… don’t leave me…”
Blood and blackness pressed at Hollyleaf’s eyelids. Oh, Lionblaze, I’m so sorry… Then she let herself sink into depths of a pool of darkness, one that wrapped around her like a warm pelt….
Wow. This was awesome!
Thank you! 😀
I love thissssss
My 3rd and final entry, with the prompt Evil Lionblaze!
Part 1 of A Hurt Lion’s Pride
Lionblaze sat, golden tabby tail twitching, as he watched Cinderheart. She was perfect, she was in his grasp, and she was going to be his mate. But she had pushed him away, and now he was going to make her pay. He’d killed before, and he could do it again. All he needed was a plan, place, and time. And then she would be sorry for ever hurting him.
Cinderheart looked longingly at Lionblaze. Was I wrong to turn him down? He’s seemed… distant, She thought sadly. He was part of a greater destiny, one without her. She’d only distract him.
Suddenly, the large golden tom snapped his fierce amber gaze on her. Cinderheart inhaled sharply as he strutted over to her and asked breezily, “Want to go for a walk?” Speechless, she nodded and followed him. He does know that I’m not going to… be with him, right? She thought as he lead her out of the camp and towards a glade. “Lionblaze,” She asked cautiously, “where are we going?”
He looked around, then hissed, “You’re going nowhere!”
Before Cinderheart could register what was happening, he bowled her over into a whole in he ground. “Lionblaze, wha-” She tried to say, but he ran his claws over her flank, causing her to screech. Lionblaze clamped a paw on her throat, choking her and blocking off her cries for help as well as her screams of pain as he clawed and bit her, but still giving her just enough air to gasp for.
Finally, he leaned over her neck and whispered, “This is for hurting me.” And with a single, swift movement, he closed his jaws over her throat.
Cinderheart’s last thought was, Lionblaze, I was just trying to help you! before the darkness overwhelmed her, and she breathed her last.
Part 2 of A Hurt Lion’s Pride
Lionblaze looked at the body of Cinderheart. He felt triumphant, yet guilty. He shook himself. Don’t be such a mouse-brain. She was only toying with you! He thought, furious with himself. Now that she was gone, so was the heartache. He could fulfill his destiny in peace.
Lionblaze prowled the edges of the Dark Forest, memories of his life clogging his brain: Sharing a mouse with his siblings, Hollyleaf and Jayfeather; nuzzling his nose into Squirrelflight’s soft ginger fur; his warrior ceremony. But not all of them were happy memories: Russetfur, the ShadowClan deputy, her throat red with blood beneath his claws; Training with Tigerstar in the place he was now sentenced to wander until he faded away; and the worst memory of all was killing the love of his life: Cinderheart.
He shuddered as he remembered all the final wounds he had inflicted on her. He remembered every claw-scratch, bite mark, and slash he made on her beautiful gray tabby fur. We could have been happy together. We could have raised a family, Lionblaze thought mournfully.
But there was nothing left now. Nothing left for him in this Place of No Stars.
Taking a deep breath, the golden tabby slashed his claws across his neck, and he faded into oblivion… forever.
Wow good job!
Thanks!
Can I do what if Ravenpaw was evil?
sure
I’ll do evil Hollyleaf first! Chapter 1 of Toxic Holly coming soon!
Toxic Holly
CHAPTER 1
“From this day on, until she earns her warrior name, Hollykit shall be known as Hollypaw.” Firestar announced.
Hollypaw felt a burst of pride. She had been apprenticed! Her mentor was Brackenfur. Hollypaw would do anything to please Brackenfur. She wanted to be better than her siblings. Obviously, Jaypaw was out of the way. Jaypaw would never earn anyone’s pride. Even better that way. Hollypaw thought. Jaypaw doesn’t deserve anyone’s pride. He’s just a blind kit!
“Hey!” Jaypaw protested.
How come Jaypaw can guess my thoughts? Hollypaw asked herself. She brushed the thought aside and told Jaypaw, “You should be cheering me and Lionpaw’s names, Jaykit, instead of moping around.”
“Jaykit!” Jaypaw burst out furiously. “How dare you call me –”
“Settle down, apprentices. C’mon, Hollypaw, Ashfur and Lionpaw are already out hunting!” Brackenfur beckoned Hollypaw over with a twitch of his tail.
“Go help Leafpool sort out her herbs. You’ll never catch a blind baby vole,” Hollypaw taunted.
“Hollypaw.” Brackenfur meowed warningly.
‘“What is it?” Hollypaw turned around, voice as slick and sweet as honey.
“Let’s go hunt.” Brackenfur mewed.
“Sure!” Hollypaw faked her happiness.
She wasn’t actually that bright. Sure, Jaypaw was too blind to see a boulder in front of him, but Lionpaw?
She would have to do a lot to get ahead of her bright-colored brother.
CHAPTER 2
“What are we doing first?” Hollypaw asked, faking happiness.
“Well, we’re going to practice hunting first, of course.” Brackenfur smiled.
Hollypaw knew her plan was working; even Brackenfur was falling for her fake brightness. He loved his ‘enthusiastic apprentice.’ And that was good.
“Sniff the air,” Brackenfur instructed.
“I smell vole!” Hollypaw exclaimed.
“Correct. Can you track the vole?” Brackenfur asked.
Hollypaw racked her brain. She had seen Honeypaw go down into a hunting crouch. She quickly copied it. “Like this?” she asked.
“Good. Now you stalk forward.” Brackenfur showed her how to move forward. “Oops, your tail is twitching too much! Keep yourself as still as possible.” Brackenfur reminded her, demonstrating with his own tail.
Hollypaw quickly scolded herself. She wouldn’t become Hollystar, the best warrior in the forest or the lake, if she didn’t get better quickly! Hollypaw corrected herself. “Very good!” Brackenfur praised.
Hollypaw swiftly cut through the grass. She caught the vole scent again and followed it. Then she saw a vole peeking through the ferns. Hollypaw lowered herself into the hunter’s crouch and stalked it carefully. Then she leaped. The vole squeaked as it saw her shadow looming over it. It started to scramble away. Hollypaw made a desperate lunge. Her paws caught its tail and she scrabbled forward. Her claws sunk into the vole’s back and she finished it off with a quick nip to the neck. “Messy catch, but it was your first catch! It will make a good contribution to the fresh-kill pile.” Brackenfur meowed.
Hollypaw reminded herself to time the leap better next time, but she couldn’t help feeling happy with herself.
CHAPTER 3
“Besides, a way to cut down on the shadows is to leap at it from the other side of the sun. That way it will only see your shadow when you have already caught it! It is best to stalk prey in the more forested areas of our territory, that way we won’t have to worry about shadows too much. C’mon, let’s see how much Lionpaw caught,” Brackenfur gave her a few tips before they padded back to camp.
Suddenly the pride that had surged through Hollypaw vanished. Lionpaw was carrying two squirrels and a fat mouse! Hollypaw had to work really hard if she wanted to be better than her brother.
“Hi, Hollypaw!” Lionpaw beckoned.
“Hi, Lionpaw.” Hollypaw padded over to him.
“You only caught a vole?” Lionpaw asked.
“Of course I ‘only caught a vole!’” Hollypaw hissed.
“All right…” Lionpaw mewed.
Hollypaw sighed. “Not in a good mood, are you?” Squirrelflight asked, coming over.
“No.” Hollypaw let herself slump into her mother.
“Aww, Hollypaw!” Squirrelflight shook Hollypaw off. “I have to go check on Jaypaw. His skills are improving, so I want to check it out!”
Hollypaw nodded, though she felt a bit insulted. Even Jayfeather was proving himself a better apprentice than Hollypaw! “Want to eat with me?” Lionpaw asked.
“OK.” Hollypaw found herself agreeing. She crouched next to Lionpaw and started chewing the juicy squirrel meat, but for some reason, it didn’t taste that good.
“JAYPAW!!!” Squirrelflight’s voice hollered. “I’M SO PROUD OF YOU!!! WHAT DO YOU THINK YOUR MEDICINE CAT NAME WILL BE?”
Hollypaw hissed through gritted teeth. Something had to be done with Squirrelflight, because it seemed Hollypaw’s mother blocked Hollypaw’s path to success.
CHAPTER 4
Lionpaw snored. And Hollypaw hated Lionpaw’s snoring! Ugh. Hollypaw thought.
Lionpaw snored again. Hollypaw snorted. She’d never get to the medicine cat den if Lionpaw kept on SNORING LIKE A BADGER! Lionpaw seemed to stir. Hollypaw kept as still and quiet as possible, but she couldn’t help snorting again. Lionpaw rolled over, crushing Hollypaw’s paw. Hollypaw carefully removed Lionpaw’s body from her paw and slunk out to the medicine cat den. Inside she saw Squirrelflight sleeping tightly wrapped around ‘her Jaypaw.’ Another pang of jealousy shot through her. Either Jaypaw or Squirrelflight had to go, and right now, Hollypaw decided Squirrelflight was her target.
Hollypaw crept out of the camp. She caught a squirrel quickly and returned. She felt ashamed that she wasn’t adding it to the fresh-kill pile, but what had to be done had to be done.
Hollypaw arranged the squirrel’s petrified limbs into an attacking shape. She crept into the nursery and scraped the squirrel’s tiny claws across Dovekit’s pelt. Dovekit squealed, and Hollypaw froze. When she knew the coast was clear, she placed the squirrel at Dovekit’s pelt, its claws drawn directly in the little scar’s on Dovekit’s body. Now she just had to wait…
CHAPTER 5
Leafpool woke up early to a pained squealing. She looked around the medicine den. Her sister, Squirrelflight, was curled around Jaypaw. As much as Leafpool loved her sister, Squirrelflight was getting pretty annoying, curled up around Jaypaw and just protecting the blind apprentice when Jaypaw was so grumpy and obviously didn’t need his aunt’s guidance. Leafpool felt like she was guilty; Squirrelflight was trying to make everyone be really sure that Squirrelflight was their mother; but Squirrelflight was seriously neglecting Hollypaw and Lionpaw! Lionpaw was too busy with training to bother, but Leafpool had seen Hollypaw flash Jaypaw envious glances as Squirrelflight groomed her nephew and never left the blind apprentice’s side.
But now to see what that painful squealing was…it sounded like a kit, so Leafpool decided to check the nursery. She was right! Dovekit was turning and twisting, screaming her head off. “Shut up, Dovekit. Let me sleep.” Ivykit muttered.
But Dovekit wouldn’t stop. Leafpool approached Dovekit. “I’m here for you…what’s wrong?” Leafpool asked.
“The squirrel’s attacking me!” Dovekit squeaked.
Just then Leafpool noticed the petrified squirrel scratching it’s claws across Dovekit’s pelt. Its eyes were glazed and cloudy. An omen from StarClan! There must have been something wrong with Squirrelflight all along…Leafpool removed the squirrel and treated Dovekit’s wounds. She hadn’t believed that it was possible that Squirrelflight could be evil and icy deep down, but it seemed like everything was possible now.
CHAPTER 6
Hollypaw awoke. She immediately padded to the nursery, and picked up a mouse to eat once she was done seeing what her ‘omen’ had done. “Hi, Ivykit.” Hollypaw smiled.
Ivykit didn’t smile back. “HOLLYPAW! I didn’t have enough sleep because DOVEKIT was whining all night long!” she complained.
“Why?” Hollypaw’s tail twitched.
“A squirrel was attacking her,” Ivykit replied.
“Then it wasn’t Dovekit’s fault. What would you have done if the squirrel was attacking you?” Hollypaw asked.
“I would kill it,” Ivykit explained.
“Silly! It was already dead!” Dovekit reminded Ivykit.
“Don’t move too much while I fasten the cobweb!” Only then did Hollypaw notice Leafpool.
“Hi, Leafpool!” Hollypaw greeted the medicine cat.
“Hi, Hollypaw. What brings you here?” Leafpool asked. Her eyes were weary and tired.
“I was just bringing a mouse to the queens,” Hollypaw answered quickly. Thank StarClan I came here with some breakfast!
“I see,” Leafpool’s eyes fixed on the mouse.
“You can have some, too,” Hollypaw offered.
“No thanks. I have to speak with Firestar. Be careful with that bandage, Dovekit! And would you please get rid of this squirrel for me, Hollypaw?” Leafpool shook her head.
Hollypaw gave the queens the mouse and padded to the dirtplace. She squeezed her nose shut and buried the squirrel. I guess that’s what I get, Hollypaw thought. Then she followed Leafpool to Firestar’s den.
CHAPTER 7
“Firestar,” Leafpool padded up to Firestar, sorrow filling her. I have to do this, Squirrelflight. An omen from StarClan is an omen from StarClan. Firestar looked up from chewing his thrush. “You may have already heard that a dead squirrel wounded Dovekit,” Leafpool began hesitantly.
“Only bad news, Leafpool,” Firestar chuckled.
“Well, then, I am sorry to say I have more bad news,” Leafpool sighed.
“Did Dovekit die?” Firestar’s gaze clouded, and his voice was shadowed with misery and fear.
“No,” Leafpool told Firestar, “it was only a small scratch. But I think it was an omen from StarClan…”
“I understand,” Firestar nodded, “but if you could tell me everything?”
“I think Squirrelflight poses a threat to our Clan!” Leafpool blurted.
The truth was out. Firestar’s eyes looked sorrowful. “You think?” he mewed quietly.
“How else would the squirrel get there?” Leafpool asked, trying to convince herself that this was StarClan’s will, too. “It must be an omen from StarClan. Squirrelflight has to leave!”
“All right,” Firestar promised. “StarClan’s will shall be fulfilled at moon high. But what about Brambleclaw?”
“He is loyal to his Clan – he must understand.” Leafpool assured Firestar.
But as she returned to the nursery to check on Dovekit, she couldn’t help thinking, Oh, what have I done?
CHAPTER 8
“All cats who are old enough to catch their own prez, please gather below the Highrock for a Clan Meeting!” Firestar called.
“What’s this about?” Lionpaw grumbled. “Dawn patrol?”
“He’s probably going to ask Leafpool and me about our herb storage,” Jaypaw argued.
“Or he’s going to tell the Clan that two specific apprentices are going to have elder duties tonight!” Cinderpaw suggested playfully.
Poppypaw and Honeypaw didn’t suppress their laughs.
“She-cats,” Lionpaw muttered.
“Toms,” Hollypaw countered.
The other she-cat apprentices laughed again. Hollypaw didn’t. Only she knew what this fateful gathering was going to be about.
“Deep down in my heart, I knew I was going to have to make this sacrifice,” Firestar whispered sorrowfully to Leafpool.
“I’m not sure –” Leafpool began.
“It was a sign from StarClan.” Firestar reminded the medicine cat. “What has to be done has to be done.”
CHAPTER 9
“Oh, father. I’m so sorry,” Leafpool’s tail rested on Firestar’s shoulder as if to comfort him, but the ThunderClan’s leader’s eyes betrayed nothing but grief.
“It’s not me you should be apologizing to, it’s your sister who deserves StarClan’s apologies.” Firestar cleared his throat and gazed down at the cats. “Today I must perform the fateful ceremony that StarClan has decreed fall upon ThunderClan, and ThunderClan alone. We shall sacrifice one of our warriors to mild the anger of StarClan…who would like to perform this fateful task?”
“You, father. You must if you want to be trusted by StarClan.” Leafpool’s eyes were pools of misery.
“Then I must.” Firestar mumbled. His voice grew louder. “Dovekit has been injured by a dead squirrel sinking its claw’s into her pure white pelt. Now, it is no coincidence that the squirrel ended up there. It cannot be. It was an omen from StarClan; the warrior with a tail like a squirrel must leave.”
All eyes turned to Squirrelflight, whose eyes were shining with a burning, intense, bright fear.
CHAPTER 10
Now that Squirrelflight was exiled, Lionpaw was the only one who stood in Hollypaw’s path to victory. Or was he? Everybody was mooning around Jaypaw ever since his ‘lovely mother’ had been ‘a traitor to him.’ Everybody pitied Jaypaw, and when cats pitied Jaypaw – especially cats from another Clan – Hollypaw would definitely not be noticed. So, before she got rid of Lionpaw, Jaypaw had to die.
“Jaypaw!” Hollypaw called in a voice sweet as honey.
“What is it?” Jaypaw grumbled.
“I’m so sorry our – I mean, your mother was such a bad mother to you! You could use some nice sweet pity, darling; a replacement mother, perhaps?” Hollypaw choked at her ugly words, but she kept them going, smooth as an actual, truthful mother would talk.
“Oh no.” Jaypaw grunted.
“No pity? No new mother?” Hollypaw fake-frowned.
“Definitely not. No more of my kin that is not my apprentice sleeping around in the medicine den.” Leafpool told Hollypaw.
Jaypaw cast Leafpool a thankful look. “But could I go out on a walk with him?” Hollypaw asked sweetly.
“No.” Jaypaw grunted.
“Then I’ll be his replacement mother,” Hollypaw threatened.
“Fine,” Jaypaw gave in, “but only this once.”
“Agreed,” Hollypaw’s voice was slippery as ever; but also as threatening as it could ever be.
CHAPTER 11
The two siblings walked outside side by side. “Why are you being so sweet and pitiful to me? I thought you understood me,” Jaypaw told Hollypaw.
“I understand you. I hope the cats in StarClan won’t throw so much of a fuss about you, dear brother.” Hollypaw’s voice turned cold and icy.
“Wait –” Jaypaw mewed, but Hollypaw had already pinned him down.
“Squirrelflight never understood you, did she? Oh, well, too bad. Squirrelflight never understood me either. But at least she noticed you! She never so much cast a glance at me! It was always ‘Jaypaw that! Jaypaw this! Hey Jaypaw you’re so good at herbs! Jaypaw what do you think your mouse-brained medicine cat name will be?’ Maybe those in StarClan won’t throw so much of a fuss about you, but you’re never going to tell another living soul about what happened.” Hollypaw growled.
“No!” Jaypaw shrieked.
But Hollypaw threw him into the river, watching as the gurgling water swallowed her brother up.
CHAPTER 12
“Help! Jaypaw – Jaypaw – he –” Hollypaw shrieked, running back to camp.
“I’ll fetch Hollypaw some poppy seeds, maybe she’ll be able to explain then.” Leafpool rushed to the medicine den.
“What happened, my little Holly?” Brambleclaw asked gingerly.
“Jaypaw!” Hollypaw gasped, faking hopelessness and sadness.
“What’s with Jaypaw?” Brambleclaw brushed his tail across Hollypaw’s forehead.
“Jaypaw? Wait, you went out with Jaypaw, right, Hollypaw? Where did you guys go?” Leafpool returned.
Hollypaw licked up the poppy seeds. She swallowed them and murmured, “The stream.”
“No…Jaypaw…fell into the stream, am I right?” Leafpool asked.
“I couldn’t get him out!” Fake tears started forming in Hollypaw’s eyes.
“Does that mean…Jaypaw’s dead?” Brambleclaw pieced together the story a bit later than Leafpool did.
“Probably,” Hollypaw whispered.
Leafpool’s eyes narrowed. “Why does it feel like StarClan’s taking everybody away from me? First my mate, then one of my kits? Who is next, StarClan? Why are you punishing me like this?” Brambleclaw started to grieve.
“Leave him alone,” Leafpool mewed softly.
“Stay for a second, my little Holly,” Brambleclaw stopped Hollypaw. “Promise me you won’t leave me?”
“I promise, “ Hollypaw told her father.
“Take us to this stream,” Leafpool ordered.
“All right,” Hollypaw felt a flash of indignance.
They reached the small river. “There!” Brambleclaw pointed at some rocks.
Jaypaw’s body lay there, motionless.
CHAPTER 13
“Jaypaw!” Leafpool cried. She nuzzled Jaypaw’s fur frantically.
“It’s no use,” Brambleclaw rested his tail on Leafpool’s shoulder. “My son is gone forever.”
“Let us hope he leads a happy life in StarClan.” Leafpool’s voice shook as she spoke.
“Oh, Leafpool. Of course he will! And I promise you – sister-in-law – you will see our little Jay again.” Brambleclaw promised.
“I hope so,” Leafpool mumbled absently.
Hollypaw felt a burst of pride. Even if she was a bad hunter compared to Lionpaw – and a bad medicine cat compared to Jayfeather – Hollypaw had the ability to kill. And she loved it. Flexing her claws – talking to her victim with a sickly sweet voice – persuading them to come to her death trap – seeing their desperate, confused faces as they realized they were going to join StarClan – sinking her sharp fangs into their throats – hearing the gurgle of blood – licking the sweet tang of blood of her claws – it was…amazing. And Hollypaw had one more job to do.
Leafpool sank her nose into Jaypaw’s pelt. “Help me pull him out,” she told Hollypaw.
They dragged Jaypaw’s body back to camp. Leafpool settled back down and pushed her muzzle back into Jaypaw’s fur. She was sharing tongues with her apprentice one last time.
Hollypaw whisked her tail impatiently. “Father, I have to go tell Lionpaw the bad news.” she excused herself from the vigil.
Then she approached Lionpaw’s den, flashing her teeth as she remembered the scent of blood.
CHAPTER 14
“Lionpaw!” Hollypaw sang.
“What is it? Is Jaypaw okay? Bet he can care for himself, that ‘great medicine cat’?” Lionpaw meowed teasingly, but Hollypaw recognized the concern in his voice.
Hollypaw shook her head. “It’s all over. Jaypaw really banged his head there – and if he didn’t die from that, well, let’s just say he probably drowned.” Hollypaw faked her voice to sound sad.
“So…he’s dead?” Lionpaw guessed, voice sad and pained.
“Yes,” Hollypaw confirmed.
“First my mother was exiled, now my brother drowned, and my sister is being all pitiful, and my father never so much looks at me because of his deputy duties?!?” Lionpaw muttered. “I hate StarClan.”
“Hey,” Hollypaw protested, trying to sound offended.
She really wasn’t. Lionpaw didn’t have so much time left in the world to offend her. “Sorry.” Lionpaw mumbled.
“I’m sure hunting will cheer you up,” Hollypaw suggested. “We can go down to the ferns.”
Lionpaw agreed and the two padded out of camp, towards the patch of ferns. “I see a vole!” Hollypaw lied.
Lionpaw crouched down to stalk it. As soon as he was bent, Hollypaw leaped at him, pinning him down. “Huh?” Lionpaw asked, flipping over.
Hollypaw smiled gruesomely and slit his throat.
Suddenly she felt a presence…Hollypaw whipped her head around. Leafpool!
CHAPTER 15
“It’s time to end this once and for all.” Leafpool told Hollypaw.
“I’d like to see you try it,” Hollypaw sneered, voice as slick as frost.
“I suspected you from the moment I saw that squirrel,” Leafpool continued.
“Ha. How?” Hollypaw tried to prevent her curiosity from sneaking into her question.
“StarClan told me, ‘Only holly catches squirrels.’ After I saw the squirrel, I knew you were trying to get rid of my sister.” Leafpool mewed.
“You were the one who announced it.” Hollypaw pointed out.
“I heard the prophecy…afterwards.” Leafpool explained.
“Well…what are you going to do to stop your niece from becoming Hollystar and killing you?” Hollypaw twitched her tail at Lionpaw’s body.
“You want attention,” Leafpool meowed, her voice filled with realization.
“Yes,” Hollypaw confirmed.
“Well, I’ll give you attention,” Leafpool meowed thickly.
“Medicine cats can’t kill.” Hollypaw mewed.
“Well, then I’m the only one that can,” Leafpool told Hollypaw.
Leafpool leaped at Hollypaw. But the black apprentice rolled to the side, jumped up and clawed Leafpool’s back. Leafpool rolled over, crushing Hollypaw. Hollypaw’s grip loosened, and Leafpool pinned Hollypaw down. “Tell StarClan that I’m sorry…” Leafpool murmured. “But this is what I have to do. Or else you will kill more cats, and I cannot let that happen. I love you, my daughter.”
Hollypaw’s eyes widened in surprise as Leafpool slid her claw across Hollypaw’s throat. Then the black darkness engulfed Hollypaw, but the apprentice still heard Leafpool whisper, “I’m sorry, but you are toxic, my little Holly. In honor of your brave spirit, my little Holly, I will give you your warrior name, so that you can feel my love wherever you are. May you live on forever and regret what you have done, Hollyleaf.”
THE END
Sushikit’s Second Entry:
Part 1, coming soon!
Part 1
From the moment she was born, Bristlefrost knew she was meant for something powerful. Something that she would do anything to achieve. Something that would benefit her – and only her. “Mommy, can you tell why Rootspring didn’t mate you?” Lilykit asked.
“All right, Lilykit.” Bristlefrost sighed. Lilykit deserved to know the truth.
“It was my warrior ceremony. We – Flipclaw, Thrushear and I – had returned from our assessment, paws and mouth filled with prey. Oh, how lovely it was! A shining new-leaf after a cold leaf-bare. Birds were singing and the trees were whispering as the wind rustled the pure green leaves. It was a perfect day for hunting. We had proved ourselves worthy of becoming warriors. Bramblestar announced our warrior names. I became Bristlefrost. And then it started. Bramblestar died.”
“Oh no! What happened next?” Lilykit asked, drawn into the story.
Bristlefrost released herself into her memories, and dove deep into the past.
Bristlepaw – no, Bristlefrost – was proudly sitting next to Flipclaw. But worry plagued her heart. “They say Bramblestar died,” Bristlefrost expressed her concern.
“Ha, it’s nothing to worry about. The Amazing Bramblestar has 9 lives, doesn’t he?” Flipclaw assured Bristlefrost, but concern was shining in the young warrior’s eyes.
“He won’t move,” Thrushear reported.
“Yes he will!” Stemleaf objected. “Look!”
Part 2
Bristlefrost looked. Bramblestar heaved himself up. “What happened?” he asked, voice sour.
“You died. Now you’re alive.” Bristlefrost told her leader.
“Oh, I see.” Bramblestar growled.
Everything was back to normal.
At least, Bristlefrost thought it was. “And Bristlefrost shall be the deputy.” Bramblestar finished.
“I’m so happy for you,” Thrushear complimented Bristlefrost.
“Thanks,” Bristlefrost smiled.
But soon, Bramblestar began to annoy her. “‘Bristlefrost this! Bristlefrost that!'” Bristlefrost decided to tell Thrushear about her annoyance.
“I see,” Thrushear nodded. “Maybe you just need some time alone.”
“That’s a great idea!” Bristlefrost exclaimed. She knew a special someone who she wanted to talk to.
“Stemleaf!” Bristlefrost called.
“What is it?” Stemleaf asked, good-humored as ever.
“Bramblestar’s just being…really annoying.” Bristlefrost complained.
“Oh, I see.” Stemleaf mewed cheerfully.
“And I wanted to ask you something…will you be my mate?” Bristlefrost asked.
Stemleaf looked unsure.
“Please?” Bristlefrost pleaded.
Stemleaf looked away. “No. I’m sorry, Bristlefrost, but you are not the right cat for me.”
Part 3
As soon as Stemleaf spoke those words, he instantly regretted them. “I’m sorry, Bristlefrost!” he mewed quickly.
“No, you are not.” Bristlefrost’s eyes were shining with grief and heartbreak.
“I was just…I…I really like Spotfur. You’re kind and you would be a good mate…but I like Spotfur and she returns those feelings. We’re a one-sided relationship. I like you as a friend, but not a mate.” Stemleaf told Bristlefrost.
Bristlefrost felt like tearing Stemleaf apart. How could he! Bristlefrost loved Stemleaf – but Stemleaf decided to mate Spotfur?!? Bristlefrost knew only one thing that could make Stemleaf love her – making Spotfur vanish.
Bristlefrost glanced down at her claws. “Fine.” she mumbled.
Relief washed over Stemleaf’s face. Inside of her, Bristlefrost laughed. Stemleaf really thought she had forgiven him? But Bristlefrost just made a pained face and stalked away.
The time had come. Spotfur would be no more. Bristlefrost yawned and stretched. She padded over to Spotfur and told the spotted she-cat, “Wanna go hunting with me?”
“I thought you would never forgive me,” Spotfur looked surprised.
Bristlefrost felt like rolling her eyes. “Forgiven and forgotten,” she promised half-heartedly.
The two she-cats padded out of the camp. But one was completely oblivious to the truth…her time to join StarClan had come.
Part 4
Bristlefrost thought about how she should kill Spotfur. If they went hunting near the lake, Bristlefrost would obviously drown Spotfur and tell the others Spotfur had drowned while hunting. But…Spotfur wasn’t going down to the lake. “Let’s go hunting near the Snakerocks!” Spotfur exclaimed.
“Aren’t there adders there?” Bristlefrost asked.
“We could catch them,” Spotfur mewed.
“All right.” Bristlefrost decided she might be able to kill Spotfur with an adder.
Bristlefrost gingerly stepped onto the Snakerocks. She felt the dewy green grass turn into hard stone underneath her paws. “Let’s see if we can spot a mouse or two,” Spotfur meowed.
She leaped skillfully in between some writhing adders, killing them with a few quick nips. “These will be yummy,” Spotfur licked her lips, cutting swiftly towards a mouse.
An adder was following Spotfur! Bristlefrost wished the adder would sink its teeth into Spotfur’s paw right then. But Spotfur jumped out of the way. Bristlefrosr gritted her teeth and jumped against Spotfur. With a yelp of surprise the she-cat fell down. The adders hissed vengefully, making their way towards Spotfur.
“Bristlefrost! Help!” Spotfur mewed urgently.
But Bristlefrost just watched coldly as one of the adders sank its teeth into Spotfur’s pelt. Spotfur writhed, gave one last shudder and fell still, dead. Bristlefrost laughed evilly. Stemleaf was hers.
Part 5
Bristlefrost ran back to camp. “Spotfur’s been bitten by an adder!” she screamed.
Stemleaf froze, vibrating in horror. “NO!” he yelled.
“Take me to where Spotfur is!” Jayfeather roared over the chaos that was erupting.
Bristlefrost led Jayfeather and Stemleaf to Spotfur. The she-cat’s bones were visible as the adders were clearly enjoying this feast.
“No, my lovely Spotfur!” Stemleaf cried.
“There’s nothing we can do, Stemleaf.” Jayfeather couldn’t see Spotfur’s dead body, but by all the noise Stemleaf was making, Jayfeather assumed Spotfur was in the paws of StarClan now.
“Spotfur!” Stemleaf looked like he wanted to bury his nose into Spotfur’s pelt.
“You can’t! First we have to get Spotfur out of that snake-pit!” a rush of fear for her love shot through Bristlefrost.
Bristlefrost leaped over the adders, hooked her claws in Spotfur’s remaining fur, and brought Spotfur’s body safely out of the pit.
“Kill her murderers for me, will you, Bristlefrost…” Stemleaf murmured, sinking his muzzle deep into Spotfur’s pelt.
Bristlefrost was more than willing to kill some of the adders. They returned to camp. “Let us sit vigil for Spotfur.” Bramblestar sounded bored.
Bristlefrost was in a different mood than sitting vigil. Stemleaf was crouched near Hollytuft, Spotfur’s sister. Stemleaf still didn’t love Bristlefrost! Bristlefrost would stop at nothing to achieve Stemleaf’s love for her.
Part 6
Bristlefrost had the perfect plan on how to kill Hollytuft. She crept into the nursery. “Myrtlekit!” she sang quietly.
“Who is there I’m sleepy…” Myrtlekit mewed.
“I want to talk with you.” Bristlefrost told Myrtlekit. “Your aunt, Hollytuft, needs some red berries from the woods. They are very yummy and Hollytuft needs them or else she will be sick. Can you eat them, too? They are very yummy. In fact, I have a pawful here for you.” Bristlefrost gave Myrtlekit five deathberries.
Myrtlekit licked her lips.
“You have to give some deathberries to Hollytuft, first. And be quick, or else Hollytuft will die!” Bristlefrost told Myrtlekit.
“Thank you Bristlefrost!” Myrtlekit mewed, rushing off.
Bristlefrost smiled.
~ * ~
“Myrtlekit is gone!” Sorrelstripe yelped the next day.
“What happened?” Bristlefrost asked, although she knew very well what had happened.
“C’mon, wake up, Hollytuft, we have to see where Myrtlekit is!” Hollytuft’s sister, Flywhisker, started shaking Hollytuft’s still body.
Then Bristlefrost heard a gasp. Flywhisker had rolled Hollytuft over! And a brown body was lying under Hollytuft! “Myrtlekit and Hollytuft! I think they are dead!” Flywhisker yelped.
Stemleaf started to cry. Now Stemleaf can’t turn me down! Bristlefrost thought, smiling inwardly about her dangerous deed.
Part 7
Only grief had shook the camp. Bristlefrost nudged Thrushear. “Where’s Stemleaf?” she asked.
“I think it’s time you stop mooning around that poor cat. He loves everyone but you! Now his niece and his mates are dead…literally, he needs some time alone!” Thrushear snapped.
Bristlefrost was taken aback. But her sister was right. In the last moon Stemleaf had done nothing but grieve. He had slept outside the warriors den, nose pushed into his Clanmate’s fur. He had refused to eat with anyone else, if he even ate at all. Bristlefrost knew she had to make a show…a good deed that would make him love her. And Bristlefrost knew just the good deed that could make Stemleaf love her. Saving him. But there was nothing to save him from, so Bristlefrost decided she had to make a problem to save Stemleaf from. And she knew just what problem she should make: a rogue attack.
Part 8
“Ginger! Smoke!” Bristlefrost hissed the rogue’s names.
The bushes rustled. “Ah, the Clan cat again,” Ginger sneered.
“Need some more help, frightened kitty?” Smoke taunted.
Bristlefrost forced her neck fur to stay down. “I see you’ve brought someone new,” she growled.
“Ah, this? Kitty, meet Scar. Our leader.” Ginger beckoned to the black tom.
“My name is not Kitty, it’s Bristlefrost!” Bristlefrost meowed.
“Hush, frightened kitty.” Smoke smiled evilly, revealing yellow, rotting teeth.
Bristlefrost flinched. “What do you need help with? And what will you repay me with? It’s not like I walk around giving favors!” Scar hissed impatiently.
“Oh, I’m not repaying you. I’m doing you a favor.” Bristlefrost growled.
“Ah? Ooh! And what favor would a Clan cat do for me?” Scar spat doubtfully.
“Don’t believe me, huh? Well, have you ever tasted fresh-kill?” Bristlefrost mewed scornfully.
“Not in ages -” Smoke was silenced by Scar’s tail.
“Well? Would you like to sink your claws into Clan pelts, and taste their fresh-kill?” Bristlefrost continued.
Ginger licked her lips. “How can we trust you?” Scar meowed cautiously.
Bristlefrost sank her claws into her paw. She held out her blood-spattered claw to Scar. “Is that enough trust?” the fluffy silver she-cat hissed.
Scar nodded. “You’ve got yourself a deal.”
Part 9
“Rogues attacked our patrol!” Flywhisker yelled an alarm.
Bristlefrost smiled inwardly, but put on a worried face. Her plan was working. “We’re afraid they might attack the camp!” Thrushear added.
“Jayfeather! Alderheart!” Bristlefrost yowled.
Alderheart rushed over and started inspecting Flywhisker and Thrushear. “None of them have serious injuries, but we should make sure they won’t get infected.” he reported.
Flywhisker, Thrushear and the other patrol members followed Alderheart to the medicine den. Bramblestar made a worried face. “All right, you two over there, Bristlefrost and Flipclaw, go guard the main entrance. I’ll set up some safety rules.” he meowed.
Bristlefrost had told the rogues all about the secret fern entrance, so she knew the rogues would get in easily. She waited, holding her breath, as Brambleclaw issued orders and checked on cats.
Suddenly Ginger and Smoke burst out of the bushes. “Attack!” Scar yowled, following them. A wave of rogues rushed in behind them. The clearing erupted into fighting. Where was Scar? Bristlefrost screamed as she saw Scar crouching over Stemleaf. Blood bubbled out as Scar bit down as the killing bite. Eventually the rogues were defeated, and Bramblestar demanded an answer. “How did you know about the ferns?” he snarled.
The remaining rogue’s gazes swiveled to Bristlefrost. “That’s enough! You are exiled!” Brambleclaw meowed furiously.
Bristlefrost fled. She fled the snapping jaws and swiping claws of her Clanmates, and was gone from their sights forever.
“And then Rootspring wouldn’t mate me, obviously. Not just because of my crimes, but because of the fact that I loved someone else…I couldn’t be his mate. That’s my story.” Bristlefrost finished.
Part 10
Lilykit stared at Bristlefrost, as if she didn’t know her mother had such a horrifying past. “That all really happened?” she mewed.
“Yes,” Bristlefrost confirmed softly.
“And you don’t feel ashamed?” Lilykit continued.
“Of course I don’t!” Bristlefrost flared. “Those ThunderClan fox-hearts ruined my life!”
“No wonder Stemleaf and Rootspring hated you,” Lilykit said as if she was on the verge of hating her mother, too. “So…who is my father?”
“Scar.” Bristlefrost meowed coldly.
“I – I hate you!” Lilykit erupted, bursting into tears.
“Say that to my face, Lilykit!” Bristlefrost hissed, bristling.
“You’re a frost-heart that bristles like evil!” Lilykit mewed bravely.
“I’m not!” Bristlefrost meowed, jumping up.
“Yes you are!” Lilykit repeated.
“And you are a forgotten dumb mouse who is going to join that forgotten dumb StarClan now !” Bristlefrost growled.
She leaped at Lilykit, pinning the bundle of fur down. Without hesitation nor regret, Bristlefrost delivered the killing bite.
She sat down. Finally at peace? A voice in her head whispered.
“No.” Bristlefrost mewed, wondering finally how sadness felt like. How defeat felt like. How regret felt like.
But she would be unstoppable. This was not her end. She would bristle like the coldest frost in the darkest, endless night when not a star was left shining or shimmering down to the ground below.
