when you didn’t realize that a playlist was being organized after posting the “dashing theough the snow” comment:

something i’ve noticed about tame impala is that there is a disconnect between old and new tame impala fans, especially since tame impala has transitioned from psychedelic rock to pop music in recent years. i keep seeing tame impala songs appear in tiktok reels, and i see people there talk about tame impala’s currents and the slow rush albums, but i have never seen anyone popular on tiktok talk about lonerism or innerspeaker, let alone the tame impala ep or any of his various singles (granted i’ve gotten all my tiktok knowledge from tiktok videos uploaded to youtube since i don’t have tiktok lol). meanwhile you go to the tame impala subreddit or the comments on tame impala’s youtube videos, and you see the longtime fans of tame impala talking about his older works and how they liked the more psychedelic rock era of tame impala. the longtime fans seem to appreciate his work a lot more, and they appreciate his music for the experierence rather than the few funky or catchy parts (which is what newer fans seem to like more). this is all coming from a “newer” fan of tame impala who acts like an older fan 🙂
but seriously, the juxtaposition between the newer fans and older fans is kind of crazy considering they both supposedly like the same thing. the thing is (in my opinion), they like tame impala for vastly different reasons. using let it happen as an example, older fans will enjoy the whole song and note the difference in sound between currents and his older albums, while newer fans (from what i’ve seen) like the song for only one part – that part being the bass guitar riff in the last minute or so of the ~8 min song. same thing for borderline: newer fans seem to only pay attention to the bassline in the chorus. and same thing for new person, except this time they only pay attention to the rihanna cover (lol). older fans like the experience while newer fans relate parts of the songs to catchy pop songs they are used to. i think the number of reasons to like tame impala is why he is so popular – even if you are not a big fan of psychedelic music, you can still enjoy the more pop aspect to his songs, and vice versa for if you dislike pop but like psychedelic. i guess what i’m trying to say is tame impala is amazing, but i’ve already said that countless times before so i guess it doesn’t matter 😛
obviously i’m generalizing a lot here – when i say “older fans” or “longtime fans”, i’m referring to the people who enjoy the psychedelic side of tame impala, and when i say “newer fans” i’m referring to the people who like the pop side of tame songs. gen z tame impala fans just tend to like the pop aspect more, and they also make up the majority of tiktok which is how i found out about the phenomenon, so i thought it would make sense to refer to them as such. nonetheless i hope you got something out of this tangled mess of ramblings in some way 🙂 (also there’s nothing bad about only liking one aspect of tame impala or not liking him at all, opinion is a thing that exists and who am i to blame you for that haha! you can only like kevin’s newer albums ans still be a tame impala fan)
This somehow reminds me of Daft Punk fans in terms of different fans liking different albums from them, since Daft Punk had a different genre and sound in each of their main albums. 😛
Some fans like the raw and unpolished Deep House sound of Homework, others (like me) love the dreamy and melodic French Disco House music in Discovery, while a few like the loud and unforgiving Electric Rock noise of Human After All, and the rest like the Disco-inspired grooves of Random Access Memories. Of course, some fans like more than one album (e.g. Discovery and RAM), but your favourite Daft Punk album seems to say a lot about your age, your music tastes and how you discovered Daft Punk’s music.
